This is the third edition that I've purchased. I've attended Hartsell's workshops on ethics for mental health professionals and consider this book to be one of the Bibles that every therapist should own and work by. Can't say how often it has helped me make better choices. Highly recommended!

Excellent book for LMFT students and those working in the field. It'll be an excellent resource in the future.

Very helpful information. Clear language with applied examples and starter forms. I am glad to have it whenever I have to update forms or policies.

This book is a must for all would-be counselors, psychologists and social workers because it gives the necessary facts about the law as it relates to therapists and others who work with emotional issues. "Apparently" I ordered two books!!! I do not feel that the product description was a fair representation. These books do not have the black and red tabs on the sides for easy access..These books are quite considerably thinner than the original books I use in my dental clinic. I believe all the same information is here but in a condensed form.I hope!! I would've preferred to have tabs to locate information. But, the quality of the photos are quite good. I have read some reviews that the photo qualities were not good, I believe this may be in the older version I was hoping to order with with tabs. Hope this helps!

Kisses From a Distance filled some of the "blanks" about my immigrant family who came here Lebanon in the early 20th century. Like the book, my own grandmother was left by her mother in a convent at age 2 with an aunt (the mother superior)to enable her mother to immigrate to America. At age 14 my grandmother also was "kidnapped" against her aunt's wishes from the convent by relatives who brought her down from the mountains to the port of Beirut for transport American. Grandmother had been promised in marriage to my grandfather, a peddler, who she literally met at the altar. Although the harshness of life here caused them to loose two of their nine children, many of their offspring became millionaires and philanthropists who helped create St. Jude's Children's Hospital together with another Lebanese man named Danny Thomas.When I brought my daughter some homemade "hummus" the other day at school here in Illinois, I told her of the author's reference in his book to his father on his deathbed, who was awakened by his son's kiss on a morning after the son had consumed large amounts of garlicky hummus---his father opened his eyes, saying: "John, too much garlic".That sums it up. It's a close book about immigrants: their industry, simplicity, focus, humor, criticisms, and dreamm, The American Dream.Bill Haddad

Beautifully written. My ancestors came here during the famine in Ireland and the book reminded me of the hardships and struggles immigrants go through and yet they made it, worked hard, and raised their families here. A very worthwhile read and enjoyable.

i come from Lebanon so i fouund the book very entertaining and nostalgic

Raff Ellis's story of his family's immigration experiences can be read as if it is an engrossing novel in today's market of published written works. Combining his miraculous discovery after the death of his mother, of a cache of over 200 letters, extensive research and visits to Lebanon, the author is able to tell in narrative form the family's trials and tribulations. I found myself continually referring to the family trees to keep track of all of its members and their interactions.The highlight of the story for me was in the fact that I discovered more about one of Raff's brothers, Al, (like how he got his name) with whom I worked for 5 years in our parish in Andover, MA. This past June I also visited him in South Africa where he is pastor of a mother parish with three "outstation" Zulu parishes. I came to realize that we all have family and personal backgrounds that make us who we are. Don't miss this fascinating tale of one family that journeyed to America, becoming a part of the whole of our nation of immigrants. You won't be able to put it down. The story will be circulating in Andover and wherever else it finds its way. Pass it on, for that is what storytelling is all about!

I teach a course, Writing Your Memoirs, in which I not only encourage and instruct students in writing their own stories, but to read the stories of others. I read a lot of published memoirs---in fact, it is one of my favorite genres---and provide my students with bibliographies of Recommended Reading.Raff Ellis' "Kisses from a Distance," the life stories of his immigrant parents who came to America from Lebanon, is a book I'm definitely adding it to my Recommended Reading list. It's a good story, very readable. It is obviously a long labor of love, good writing, and much research.Especially interesting is the way this author interweaves the past, the lives of his parents, and the present, his commentary on the research, talking with relatives and others in Lebanon who knew his parents. I hope he will now write of his childhood growing up Lebanese-American, and bring the story up to the present.I highly recommend "Kisses from a Distance" to everybody who likes to read memoirs, is interested in the immigrant experience, and who appreciates history and good research.

I loved the colorful detail of Raff Ellis's family history. Such knowledge of before and after emmigration is rare. A bonus to the story is his family being from the former fuedal lords and their story being told from a view point rarely seen. Well written, it speaks to the immigrant experience of the late 19th and early 20th century in America for any ethnic group. As a descendent of Lebanese immigrants from the same period I am proud that our story is now fully presented better than I ever think it has been before. The afterword portion at the end was a treat as Raff discusses full on the racial prejudices that face arab Americans and his experiences with these prejudices. It was true vidication for me and my familie's upbringing here as Arab Americans. Only the highest praises, I strongly recommend his book for any students history class! Thanks Raff!

This book is both fascinating and thought provoking. As an Arab American I found this detailed account of the Ellis Family's journey to America especially interesting, but it's also certain to appeal to readers whose family came from any land. Raff Ellis captures both the history and traditions of Lebanon while describing in detail the trials and tribulations his family encountered trying to immigrate to America to make a new home. Although "Kisses From a Distance" is a very personal account which obviously is a labor of love for Ellis, he does not suger coat the story. It's well written and rich with detail. I enjoyed this book very much and I highly recommend it.

"Kisses From a Distance" was recommended by a friend and I'm thankful to her for that! It's a very readable memoir, touched with humor and filled with first-hand stories handed down to Raff Ellis. His narrative flows easily and the photos add much interest. I drew many connections to my own Irish great-grandparents' experience. They immigrated to NYC during the Irish Potato Famine. I just wish I had the treasure trove of letters and photos that Raff has. They are priceless. All Americans are descended from immigrants, so we can all identify with "Kisses From a Distance," no matter our ancestors' ethnicity. Kudos to Raff for this labor of love.

I particularly enjoyed reading how both sisters came to embrace the raw food diet: one has been a raw food fanatic for years, trying valiantly to attain the perfect 100% raw diet but finally compromising at 80%; the other had a long proud history of working at McDonalds (and sampling the food!). Not surprisingly when she changed her eating habits, her health improved drastically and she lost weight.While they acknowledge that an 80% raw food diet is perfectly acceptable, they don't mention what kind of non-raw foods they eat to maintain their healthy eating patterns. I think this would give the book a good balance, so readers don't feel the same "guilt" one sister suffered when she couldn't go 100% raw. There was a very good informative section on how and when to buy organic (if you're not planning to eat the skin, don't worry if it's not organic) but I didn't like the claim that "your doctor" will tell you that a raw food diet can cure cancer etc.There are some good recipes here, but with raw food it's hard to tell the smoothies from the soup!

This is a poor excuse for a health type book. Nothing new, not at all interesting and I would not bother to offer it again.

I have been hearing about the "raw movement" a lot lately, so when I learned about the Two Sisters recipe book, I decided to give it a try. I appreciate the fact that they acknowledge the human factor in their writings. We aren't perfect, we will cheat but it's okay, as long as we get back on track. I am definitely going raw. Many of my acquaintances have and are healthier for it. Finally, a plan that makes sense. Mother nature has been providing for us for many years, it's time we listen to her. Honestly, how many obese wild animals have you seen? Kudos to the Two Sisters!!

As a PhD candidate, I heard about 'the Comparative Method' a while ago when I studied methodology. I thought I'd give 'the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA)' a try. I have not yet gotten to later books developed by Ragin, where elaborates on QCA and 'the fuzzy sets' . Thus, this review judges this book by itself.Has it convinced me that 'the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is important? It certainly seems so. He spends the first half of the book, as well as the last chapter, defending the QCA method, which is supposed to take strengths from both the qualitative and quantitative methods. That is, while variable-oriented approach is limited by simplified conceptions of cause, the case-oriented approach is limited by its inability to address large numbers of cases. The QCA is supposed to be the middle-road between the two extremes. It is supposed to allow investigators both to digest many cases and to asses causal complexity (p.168).Convinced? I certainly found that Ragin's desire to bridge the qualitative and quantitative approaches was valid. He develops good arguments from Chapter 1 to 5 why the current approaches are inadequate, including combined strategies (which use both qualitative and quantitative methods simultaneously).The evaluation of the QCA is that it holds a lot of promise. Chapter 6 develops basic concepts that help you understand the Boolean algebra, which Ragin exemplifies with simple data. The problem comes with Chapters 7 and 8, which are respectively supposed to describe 'extensions of boolean methods' and 'show real-life examples'. In practice, Ragin rushes through these chapters, throws us into the water, without teaching us how to swim properly. What do I mean? With table 8 onwards, he begins addressing procedures of complex examples. However, he skips many steps, making it untraceable how he develops resulting formulas. If you follow the steps from Chapter 6, you will see that you are encountering a complex situation which was not addressed earlier. Instead of explaining all the steps or a complex example, Ragin simply jumps from the beginning to the "final result". Consider, on p.119, where he throws this formula:(T)(R') = (B + aCd) (AB + CD) = AB + BCDAs a matter of fact, tracing steps outlined in Chapter 6, should lead us to this equation AB + BC +aC, not AB + BCD (verified by two other people).So what is going on? You never find out, because Ragin never addresses the rules of his method in the complex examples. This is sign of a poorly developed methodological structure - whereby the reader cannot follow all the steps. The argument he makes is that the book is too small to describe details. However, he spends a lot of time re-addressing issues with other approaches, as well as showing similar examples, without even once addressing how he works with complex formulas. This is a major weakness which makes this book a poor guide to QCA.That said, the book has its own uses. For very simple examples, this is a good introduction to the QCA. Raing spends his early chapters discussing some problems of current (at the time) methodologies: too unlike reality, too focused on independent effects of variables, not configurational enough. Then, Ragin presents his argument for getting beyond the qualitative/quantitative divide by introducing a different method of mathematical analysis of comparative data: Boolean Algebra. By coding for the presence or absence of certain factors, Boolean Algebra allows for the assessment of collections of variables (like interaction terms, only more complex) and seemingly brings together mathematical precision and qualitative depth.While there are certainly some problems with the book (what on earth are the cases we are considering and how does one select them? How do we determine what are salient "variables" to include in the "truth tables"? etc.), it remains a classic of methodology and the corner stone of the methods that Ragin continues to develop (QCA, Fuzzy Sets, etc.). Catton stands out as another American journalist-historian who transcends his peers, as he deftly tells the events of the 1862 campaigns, largely from a Northern perspective. I can't probably add much to Catton's sparkling reputation with this review, so I'll be brief. I am a long-time military history buff, but this was my first encounter with his work.First, Catton relates well the battlefield experience. Of course, this is what it must have seemed like to him, and to his readers, 100 years or more later. Even so, by relying on memoirs and letters, Catton captures the smoke, confusion, and horror of battle with color and human insight that makes this book stand out even today.Second, Catton also describes with much understanding the relationship between McClellan, the Army of the Potomac, and Lincoln. The men loved McClellan, whose panache reminded them of that first blush of glory when they enlisted, of that boyhood war they wanted it to be. From the Peninsula to Antietam, Catton explains how this army became Lincoln's army, how Mac and the army grew apart after Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1862, the North's approach transformed from the softer touch to the South advocated by McClellan to the no-holds-barred, hard-hearted war that Lincoln wanted and knew it had to become.Catton tells this story as a human drama, more emotional than as a purely rational, factual exercise. In doing so, he achieves a fresh and memorable take on history, especially this period.

This is the first book of a trilogy by author Bruce Catton about the Civil War exploits of the Army of the Potomac. Its a wonderfully written account of the period from the summer after the start of the war (April 12, 1861) to when its first commander, George McClellan, was permanently relieved by President Lincoln on November 5, 1862. This period included the battles of Seven Pines, Seven Days, Second Manassas (Bull Run), South Mountain, and Antietam. Catton gives the reader a lot of insight into the personalities and capabilities of the commanders, the lives of the ordinary soldiers, the deposition and peculiarities of the various units, and the details and horrors of the fighting. It is a wonderful insight into that time and those events.I'm embarrassed to say I was not familiar with Bruce Catton, who turns out to have been a renowned historian, Civil War expert, editor and author. This may be because the books were published between 1951 and 1953. Later, readers like me were drawn to authors such Shelby Foote. But Bruce Catton is just as good a writer. And he lived early enough to have listened as a boy to Civil War veterans tell their stories. His primary sources add a great deal of color and detail to his books. Catton won the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also the first editor of American Heritage magazine. If you have any interest in American history, Bruce Catton should be on your list of authors. Highly recommended!

I first read this book, and the subsequent two books in Bruce Catton's American Civil War trilogy (which begins with Mr. Lincoln's Army), in high school at the suggestion of my all-time favorite teacher, the late Mr. Alvin Murphy, who taught American history at our school. Now, 55 years later, I have just finished rereading the trilogy - and these three books are just as great as I remember them to be! Bruce Catton is the gold standard of American civil war historians.

In this story of the final period of the war, we have passages graced by such lyrical quality it approaches poetic mastery. The author brings us ever so gradually to the conclusion of the Civil War. We move from the carnage of the Wilderness Campaign to the Bloody Angle assault to the battle for Petersburg and Richmond. This story envelops the reader with the overall sense of the brutality of the American Civil war. Bruce Caton tells this story with a clarity and mastery of the subject that brings the reader in almost as a witness. The descriptions of the men in their camps, the weather conditions on the battlefield, and descriptions of the sunsets after which men will die the following day approach the very best in the storytelling of the American Civil War. I wanted to read a book by Bruce Caton, and, I enjoyed this final volume in the series. I know the way American history is taught leads many people to never pick up a book on this topic for the rest of their lives. Itâ€™s a shame that they never experienced Bruce Caton as a teacher.

I am rereading this wonderful series and after having read many, many other books on aspects of the Civil War I am convinced this is still the best of all! There may be an error or two--65 years of further research would guarantee that--but the story, oh, the story Catton tells. I love the way he works participants' personal observations into the military record, how he relates personal information and day-by-day soldier life amid his detailing of battles and strategies. The other two books in the series will get my rereading presently (Glory Road is, to me, the most effective of all his many books at explaining the politics and the change in the political structures and relationships resultant from the war).Any Civil War student must read this series as a benchmark against which to measure all others.

Not sure quite yet what to make of the book, to be honest. Itâ€™s well written and I enjoyed the read - particularly as it presents a very different view than is usually presented of that period and warfare. That being said, itâ€™s obvious the author is a supporter of his primary character and often highlights his positives, minimizes his negatives. I suppose everyone does this, just something to be aware of as you read the book.

This book reads like another contorted version of history; the Crusaders are all depicted as a bunch of bloodthirsty, glory-seeking warlords. The author even goes so far as to compare the Christian Crusaders to the medival equivalent of modern child soldiers of Africa. The book is dry and has one note; Crusaders: bad guys, Muslim Jihadi: good guys.. I recommend God's Battalion's by Rodney Stark instead

A violent, ruthless and effective soldier, he was notorious for his excesses against friend and foe alike. He is still the only Christian to lead an attack towards Islam's holy places in Arabia, a campaign which has led to him being vilified by Muslims ever since.From an obscure background, Reynald rose to marry princesses, make kings and lead crusader forces in their greatest victory against the might Muslim leader Saladin. Well-doicumented with original sources, God's Wolf puts Reynald at the centre of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century. Indeed the book explains the whole history of the period from a fresh angle and in an exciting and accessible way. It leaves you wanting more from this author.

I'm a beginner to Spanish Learning and flash cards have always been the best method for me to reinforce knowledge. These flash cards are good for just that. They aren't miracle workers, just a great tool to use to increase your Spanish vocabulary. Small enough to fit into my purse or any bag. I use them during down times or when I find myself waiting in a line or at a doctor's office, which always leads to a conversation with a stranger about the struggles of learning a 2nd language. The cards are large enough to read without my glasses. :-). They are sturdy and made from the same type of stock paper as index cards. They are a great value for the price.

Since it's hard to tell what's actually included due to the limited sample pages, here's a list:1. Confusing words pairs2. False friends3. Idiomatic & other meaningful expressions (Subsections for expressions with: a, de, en, por, andar, dar, echar, estar, hacer, ir, perder, poner, quedar, ser, tomar, tener)4. These cars are for beginner level Spanish students. There are a few intermediate cards thrown in there. They're flimsy, but that is what I was expecting. I knew most of the vocabulary in this flashcard set, but they're still useful for helping me retain words.

Exactly as advertised, 1000 flash cards the size of business cards. Thickness is in the middle between a sheet of paper and a business card. I like it that thin as it keeps the price low. Very happy to get 1000 flash cards for under $20. Plus this is the only flash card I saw with 1000, the others seemed to have 100 or less for almost the same price. This one covers it all.

I like the cards and the way they are written but I wish they were printed on something a little more durable. These are very flimsy business card size cards.

Very helpful. I use this to teach mentally handicapped children Spanish. There were some cards missing, actually the months of the year. The sellers sent a new box of cards and let me keep the other one. This has been a very effective teaching tool.

This assortment of flash cards is very well organized by topic. I take out a selection of them and haul them around in my backpack or purse to use when I have a moment. Some items are less than useful in 2019 because times have changed. For example: no one uses travelers cheques anymore for obtaining travel money, so an update on financial items and perhaps more about tech would be useful , but for the cost, I am pleased.
