I recently finished reading “Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee” by Michael Korda. This is the first modern, full-scale, one-volume biography of Lee that I’ve had the pleasure to read in many years.Overall, I think “Clouds of Glory” is an excellent book. It tells the familiar story of Robert E. Lee’s life and career in a straightforward and compelling manner. Korda doesn’t offer any groundbreaking new revelations about Lee; what he does do very effectively is dispel the “marble man” known to history. According to Korda, Lee is an estimable yet deeply flawed figure. He is reserved and mild-mannered, yet sometimes displays strong passions and a harsh temper. (That temper may have led him to make rash decisions during key Civil War battles, which may have cost him victory.) Lee is a man of his times who owns (and possibly mistreats) his slaves. He held many of the same racist views common in his day, which we in the twenty-first century certainly find abhorrent.Korda describes and analyzes most of the key Civil War battles in which Lee participated. He praises Lee for his many battlefield successes, such as the Seven Days campaign and the battles of Second Manassas and Chancellorsville. At the same time, Korda is not afraid to point the blame at Lee for his failures on the battlefield. He is unsparing in his criticism of Lee for his poor decisions that led to a draw at Sharpsburg and a defeat at Gettysburg. Ultimately, however, Michael Korda presents Robert E. Lee as an admirable figure who deserves his place among the great generals in history.I thoroughly enjoyed “Clouds of Glory.” It’s a fascinating and informative book that really brings its subject to life. It is certainly very well researched. My only criticisms of it have to do with Korda’s writing style. He sometimes appears to fall in love with the sound of his own prose. He tends to repeat himself on occasion, and his prose is sometimes wordy and difficult to follow. (I actually found some single sentences that had 90 or more words in them… way too many!)Despite these minor complaints, I think “Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee” is one of the better biographies of any Civil War general I’ve ever read. Highly recommended. (4½ Stars ^ 5)

First let me say that I've read many books on the Civil War, so I went into this read with a good bit of knowledge on Robert E. Lee. The middle, and largest section of Korda's biography covers the Civil War years, which is to be expected. That being the case, there was some new information there that I'd not read about in other books, but most of it covered details I'd previously read about. The elements of Lee's life that made this book excellent, for me anyway, were the pre- and post-Civil War years. If you're a reader of Civil War history, those chapters alone are worth the read as they provide a more complete picture of Lee, the man, as opposed to Lee, the general. Of course, as mentioned, there is much on the war years and his campaigning there, as well. All in all, I really enjoyed this biography and highly recommend it for any U.S. history fan.

I went into this books NOT being a Civil War buff. What I knew about Gen. Lee I knew from the various history classes I have taken throughout the years. I can't speak about how accurate the text is, but I admit it was a pleasant read that gave a lot of background material to the man. We meet Lee before he was the beloved figure, the legend, the brilliant battlefield commander, and we are shown how he developed into that...In fact we are repeatedly shown this, multiple times, with the same words. If this book has a major fault, it would be that the author, in an attempt to look at the whole of Lee's life, decided that he could boil it down to three arguments, that Lee was profoundly influenced by the life of George Washington vs that of his father, that Lee was a kind man, and that Lee was brilliant, but he made mistakes. The author then proceeds to repeat this, constantly, many times with the same phrases, throughout the sections of the book. There were times that I wanted to scream "We get it already!" It was almost as if in trying to write a timeline book, when he ran out of words for a particular chapter in Lee's life, he would go back to one of those arguments as a filler. I don't need that level of handholding and an argument should be, well, argued, not repeated over and over again in the hopes that I would just accept it.Show, not tell, in other words. That said, it was an engrossing read. I can't say that I am now a Civil War buff or that I now know Lee, but I did come away with a better appreciation of him and a desire to learn more about that era and the generals who fought in that war. So if I can recommend this to anyone, it would be to novices who might have an interest, but not a need to know exactly each order and counter order in the war. For that, it's a good book... just be prepared to read the same arguments over and over again.

Both biography and revisionist history, "Clouds of Glory" is a fascinating portrait of Robert E. Lee both as a person and as the leader of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. Michael Korda writes favorably of Lee as a young man, husband, father, U.S. Army officer and superintendent of West Point, and even-handedly as the South's most famous general. I particularly appreciated his critiques of other Lee biographies and the memoirs of Lt. General James Longstreet: the result is a persuasive argument that Lee was a brilliant and fearless military leader who was hobbled by his aversion to personal confrontation. I wish there had been more about his post-war life. Lincoln's assassination (and Lee's reaction to it), for example, is not even mentioned. I also wish he had followed Lee's family a little longer after Lee's death. Korda writes well and engagingly but better editing would have eliminated some repetitiveness and an overuse of the quotation mark key. But those are minor detractions from an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable book.

A good book for those that are new to magic. Protecting yourself, and home from unwanted energy is always of utmost importance. However, unless you are fully experienced, it is my opinion that sympathetic magic, whereas you bind yourself to an object, like a poppet, is better left alone. I also feel that it is unwise to “invoke ancestors to protect you and your family” as outlined in chapter 4. Reason being that unless you know exactly who you’re invoking, you could be inviting an ancestor with low energy and a bad past. Always be cautious.Other than those two issues, I think that this book offers a lot of positive and simple opportunities to practice your skills at energy working.

Today I'm reviewing Protection Spells - Clear Negative Energy, Banish Unhealthy Influences and Embrace your Power by Arin Murphy-HiscockRelease Date - August 7,2018Source and Credit - Good ReadsCurrently a resident of Montreal, Canada, Arin works as a freelance writer and editor. She is the author of Power Spellcraft for Life: The Art of Crafting and Casting for Positive Change (2005), Solitary Wicca for Life: A Complete Guide to Mastering the Craft on Your Own(2005), The Way of the Green Witch (2006), The Way of the Hedge Witch (2009), and Pagan Pregnancy: The Journey From Maiden to Mother (TBA). She is also the editor of the anthology Out of the Broom Closet (2009).Arin is a third-degree Wiccan High Priestess in the Black Forest Clan, a tradition linked both by lineage and practice to several other branches of Wiccan thought and philosophy including the Caledonii Tradition, Druidism, Gardnerian practice, Seax-Wicca, general Celtic Wicca, and German witchcraft. She works as a priestess in her community performing rites of passage and giving occasional workshops, and leads a private coven.Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an atheist witch. I look for the connection between magic and science without the need for a deity. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 13 years honing my craft. I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.Like many spell books, this author starts this book with the the ins and outs of spell work. I really like the section on how spells work. The author tells us, "... if you're looking to use spells to avoid work, you're in for a rude awakening." Ain't it the truth!! Time, patience and more patience are key to working with magic. It is refreshing to see a book confess this at the very beginning. There's no easy way to get what you want in life. In order to succeed, you must work for it.The section on ethics is also very good. On page 17 the author tells the reader, "You don't get to do magic on or for people without their permission." So many new witches jump right into binding magic, curses or even healing spells without first consulting with your client or perspective client. Sometimes a client may be working against the very magic you're casting. Sometimes consent to cast isn't enough. An example of this is when I was working a binding spell for an abusive partner and the client was actively calling the target of the spell. They were following them from work, and driving by the abusive partner's house. This is directly counter productive for a binding spell. Once I found out, I quickly cut the cord with this client. So consent is indeed critical in spell work but so is the responsibility of the client to follow the path the adviser has laid out for them.Circle basics, casting and altars are at the very beginning of the text. Something I find that many spell books are lacking. The author fails to add "Wards" in the Types of spells section on page 25. I was a bit surprised by this; as wards are the most common type of protection spells out there. We only hear about binding more due to Hollywood, but wards are super simple and work well to return magic back to its origin either in reverse or directly as the sender intended. For me, I see this come to fruition in many of my day to day activities. Wards only work on those sending magic to you. If they're sending good magic, they get good magic back. If they send bad magic - well, you know how that goes. The books is divided up on spells related to Body and Spirit, House and Home and Rituals and Protective Objects. On page 166, the author gives us a spell for protecting oneself on public transport. This spell pulls in the Raidho and Eihwaz runes and gives the reader direction on how to apply the runes to a transit pass (bus pass/ticket) for a trouble free journey. The spell is extremely easy and could even be preformed at the bus stop while you wait.As with many of the books I review, my favorite part is the reference section. The key to any good spell book is to be able to find exactly what I'm looking for quickly. The author makes it easy for me to find purification spells, cord magic and much more with the full index in the back. I believe many authors skip this important step. We're witches on the go, we have shit to do, please let me find the spells a bit more easily.Over all I would say this is a great book for those not interested in writing their own spells. They are simply written, easy to use and well thought out. The Purifying Spray on page 88 for example is extremely easy to use and for the most part, made up of ingredients that most witches would have on hand.I would highly recommend adding this book to your standard witchy library. I believe you won't be disappointed.

Extremely useful and wonderful to read! I will definitely be pulling some of these spells out to make them my own!

Love this book. Take what you need, leave the rest. This book is a book of protection spells but it is also great book for learning how to set intentions, how to ground yourself, and how to calm yourself when the world gets crazy. I've done the spells, but I'm also practicing grounding and harnessing energy to manifest goals. i.e. set an intention and work towards it.

Thank you
