This book was not readable, the language, while I'm sure colloquial for the time, meant nothing to me. I read maybe 1/4 of this and had to say no more, it just wasn't enough making sense. It felt like the book was trig to be dream like in showing the visions and feeling of Hild, but the way it was written did not support the plot. It was a highly recommended book, well reviewed in an "important" magazine, but did could not hold my interest at all. Very disappointing, especially since it was well recommended in other places and I paid full price.

One would like to appreciate the big 5 publisher's stretch with this novel, a big stretch beyond the norm of crappy Tudor and romance-driven historicals set in "Rome" or "Egypt" and the usual generic historical cover with a woman in a gown ( the gown usually inappropriate to the novel's time period.)But having made that stretch to try putting out something weighty, a good editor would have been necessary to get the lead boots off this prose. As other reviews note, this novel is heavy on the archaic terms to a degree that hampers the reader rather than helping with atmosphere. By page 100, one is tired of the sole point of view: Hild's. She is not a charming child, and by page 100 has reminded the reader of Hild's powers [ occult? -- it is not made clear] and she has already referred to herself countless times as Light of the world. However, the child is not the protagonist and a better choice could have been made for the narrator. Nor does the narrator's coming-of-age hold many surprises. The best aspect of the novel are passages relating to the seasons, and wildlife. Somewhere along the way the author fell in love with her concept for the novel but then lost her way in the execution of it.

This is an extraordinary novel, exploring the character if Hild with powerful imaginative detail, and based on careful historical research. And it is a great story, pulling my reading along, hour after hour, with the struggles of its characters in a society beset with sometimes violent struggles for political and religious power. Is it essentially a hero's quest? The classic heroic journey for personal destiny and spiritual awakening?Or is it a merely the careful crafting, through the development of one young woman in a complex society, of a story about the very nature of what it means to be fully human? At the very least, it is a fully imagined world, including detailed observations of the natural world, and the strategic thinking involved in political and military decisions. The novel revolves around the strengths od Hild, who seems to understand the relationships among the families and hierarchies who work together in a complex medieval society. To me, the characters felt like real whole people, with distinct temperaments and personalities, in other words fully developed rounded characters.i plan to reread this novel closely, and will recommend it to many of my friends.I will also tell my friends that this great story includes some quite compelling erotic scenes. Each is essential both to character development and to the momentum of the plot. As with the rest of the novel, these scenes are beautifully written.Be forewarned however, it would seem there will be at least one more volume of this important imaginative 'biography' of Saint Hild.Waiting for more might try our patience,Frankly, I lack the confidence to label this novel "Great."So many novels of the past labeled "Great" lack the insight into human nature necessary to earn that judgment, especially compared to some recent achievements in English literature. (I cannot judge works that I can read only in translation.)That said, at this moment , I believe Nicola Griffith deserves the acclaim of the finest literary judges in the world for her great creation.

Hild was one of those women who appear throughout history - strong, independent, smart, powerful and simultaneously feared and loved. Not defined by the men in her life, Hild plays a pivotal part in keeping her king in power while acquiring her own land and wealth.Christianity is coming to their part of the world. Hild learns to open her mind to new beliefs while negotiating very carefully around the head of the church who is greedy for power. This is a period of time that I knew nothing about. The novel made the time seem very familiar. She included details where necessary but left room for imagination to fill in the background.im looking forward to reading the second and third books in the trilogy.I had to let the unfamiliar names and words slide on by. There is a pronunciation guide at the back of the book but looking words up was hard to do when I was enthralled in the story.

I loved this book so very much. Hild sees more in an instant than others will ever understand. Hild searches for pattern, for the warp and weft of her time, of the people and weather and the others living around her—birds and deer and the small shrews. From an endangered family, in a time when men in power can do anything, anything at all, Hild at 3 is already aware of how the light might fall just so and make her dead. How she stays alive, as an un-pretty child and then a sexually aware young woman, how she uses her blade, her understanding—this alone would make a powerful story. But Hild is more than that. She lives through transitions of Christianity and change, the clash of armies and of the secret powers of woman and priests.I understand that people struggle with the names (of mostly real people, so the naming is not up to the author) and details (of ancient lives) but it is rare that a writer so fully captures the daily texture as well as the swordfights and trauma of any time, much less one so distant in time.

Review

"I love the tension this book brings... [it] forces Christians to examine the Bible. If it takes a shockingly "awkward" illustration of Jesus depicted as a pyromaniac vine to open up John 15, so be it! " - from the foreword by pastor Dan Kimball

About the Author

HORUS GILGAMESH was raised Catholic before being "born again" in college when he began following a calling toward full-time ministry. Early on, his efforts were focused on youth evangelism and Biblical literacy around the world. When he was on a missions trip to Africa, a fearless young boy approached, pleading, "Chakula? Maji?"- the Swahili words for "food" and "water." Unfortunately, Horus had no food or water to offer the poor child - only Bibles. A few days later, Horus met a humanitarian relief worker from Spain who shared five simple words of wisdom that would change his life forever - "Empty stomachs have no ears." Horus realized that he was not meeting the very real needs of the people he was hoping to help - he was struggling to finding a purpose in his own life, as a self righteous servant of his Creator. To many Christians, the most important gift you could ever give to a man is a chance at eternal life through the Gospel of Jesus Christ - the Living Water. But what about this life? There are billions who would give anything for a drink of regular old H2O.

I am so glad that I got over my own hangups with "sequels". When the author announced a second book, I was nervous because I adored the first book but I rarely enjoy most movie sequels. In short - I was truly stunned. This second book is not just "better" than the first one - it is TEN TIMES BETTER! The Bible passages chosen are extremely relevant and important discussion starters, the illustrations are provocative and challenging, but - I think the real genius of this series is found in the annotations in the back of the book.As a freelance writer myself, I am consistently amazed by Horus' ability to communicate complex arguments within such a limited number of words. In a single paragraph, he's often able to illuminate, argue, and frankly destroy common theological or apologetic arguments that have been passed on for centuries. He is also able to find a perfect balance between wit, wisdom, and skepticism without coming across as a "angry." (Though, given his past life in Christian ministry, it is great to read through some of his own struggles with losing his faith...)As far as specifics, I don't know if I have a favorite illustration yet. I laughed out loud at "More Than A Woman," I banged my hand on the table while reading, "I am Nothing Without Jesus," I grimaced at "Whore No More," and I openly wept reading "To Train A Child". Actually, one of my favorites is probably the modern day interpretation that opened the door for the commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance. It is all just brilliantly executed - from the illustration that makes you cock your head, to the essays that make you really think about the cultural context of these stories today.KID WARNING: There are a couple of illustrations (quoting Bible verses) that are fairly shocking, but - remember: this is NOT meant for kids!

This is a wonderful follow-up to Vol. 1.It perfectly crystallized the thoughts I had since childhood. These were thoughts I was often too scared to say (it was the 70's, after all) unless I was given no other choice in which case I wouldn't lie and just go along to get along.I wish I had someone else back then so I wouldn't have felt so isolated and alone with my non-conforming ideas.

Still way not for children. Well, maybe.I finished up the second volume of Awkward Moments (awkwardmomentsbible.com) and I must say it really was better than the first (If that is possible). The book tackled more complicated stories and issues and I really got the feeling that the authors passion went to a different level. Issues such as "The Ultimate Privilege of sacrifice", "The new Christian Holy War", "Under God in the classroom", "Burning the Trash" and one of my personal favorites "I am nothing with Jesus".Simply put this book is amazing! It tackles more of Biblical stories and really shows how ridiculous all these things are when put into a realistic perspective. The attitude of the author is not one of hatred or anger but instead just presents the facts and encourages the Christian (or anyone else) to objectively consider the historical facts and reason.I would encourage everyone to read it. Yes even children although depending on their background it could be rather shocking. I would especially put a challenge out there to all my Christian friends and anyone who has posted a "God is Love. Like if you agree" on Facebook. (Clearly God is not Love.) So come on all you Christians and "Christian Up" and put your big boy pants on and grab your favorite version of the Bible and try to get through this book with a critical thinking open mind. I really doubt you can do it, but I hope you can. You will be better for it and I won't tell your pastor. It will be our little secret .Horus Gilgamesh is a fun author to read. He has a strong background in historical religion and has lived in the ministry many years before writing this book. His insight is well thought out and he has a humble attitude toward delivering the material. He knows what he is talking about. It is a great read!Note: No kool-aid was consumed while writing this review. (read the book)Easter Egg: The forward is written by a pastor (minister).

BEST children's bible you can ever purchase. Nothing is sugar coated here (the way preachers' sugar coat the atrocities found in the bible) and the illustrations give you a better understanding of what the bible is ACTUALLY saying. Not everything is about interpretations and metaphors in the bible and this book shows you that. :) Definitely recommend if you would like an open-minded approach to the bible. It helps when you read for yourself and stop letting people TELL you what it says. If you're butthurt by what this book says, then maybe you should get rid of your cognitive dissonance. Like Bob Marley sang, "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds." ;)

The second volume in this series is just as engaging and thought provoking as the first. My favorite line is the one comparing evangelical missions to the crusades with swords being replaced by water bottles and expecting the same results. Everyone who is old enough to think critically should read the bible and other "holy" books. This book does a nice job of pointing out some of the more uncomfortable passages from the source that Christians who want a theocracy in the United States quote so often.

You'll either love the snarky pictures about Christianity or you will hate this steaming pile of blasphemy. As for me I love it. The cartoons are great and yet they point to legitimate Bible verses, which are sufficient to drive the religious right into an apoplectic state. After looking at the cartoons and reading the text I went to my handy-dandy Bible on my iPad and check the listed verses in several versions to confirm that the verses were legitimate, and they are. I actually suggested Christians read this so that they can be prepared to deal with horrible, awful atheists like me.
