This is definitely "elevated" as they claim. Most of the ingredients in this book, other than possibly the flour and the water will not be found easily in the home cook's basic pantry, nor will they be located at your local grocery store unless that store is a specialty foods place.All of that aside, this is a well organised and useful book regardless. The beginning sections of the book deal with how to make a basic dough and how flour and water bind together to make pasta, so for people just starting out making their own, this is helpful information. There is also a complete section on how to cook the pasta properly.The photos in this cook book are beautifully done and there are many of them, so if you are like I am and want to see if your product looks like the recipe says it should, this is a good book for that.The book is arranged into seasons so you have a perfect pasta for each time of the year.Overall I thought this was a delightful addition to my home library and would recommend it for those looking to add a little excitement to their family dishes.This review is based on a complimentary copy from Blogging for Books in exchange for an unbiased review.

I've been to the author's San Francisco restaurant a couple of times, and the book is kind of like the restaurant: good, entertaining, but not quite worth the price. It's part memoir, part cookbook. The recipes are kind of fussy, with some obscure ingredients you aren't likely to find outside of a major foodie capital like San Francisco. It's worth checking out of a library to get his take on basic pasta technique, which is not quite the same as you find in your average Italian cookbook or Youtube video, but it's not really a keeper.

Beautiful book. Most recipes call for crazy ingredients though, such as wild boar and things I've never even heard of. The book was extremely informative and very in depth in teaching professional techniques. I just wish some of the recipes were made from ingredients I could buy at a supermarket.

This is a fantastic book. I have spent cooking time in Bologne and in Brescia. These are classic classic!!! Fabulous find. Your pasta will be totally authentic if you follow these instructions. I could have saved thousands in cooking class fees but wouldn't have known how authentic and real this collection of recipes is (because...well Italy). I bought a copy for me and now I am buying one for each of my chefs. One of the best most clearly written books on classic pastas.

Pasta should be simple. It's what my Nonna preached to me from childhood. These recipes are not simple. In fact, they overcomplicate many simple steps. I also don't appreciate recipes that are missing lines of text. The prep instructions for the heirloom tomatoes on p. 55 drops a line of instruction. Not hard to figure what was missing, but this is just unforgivable in a book at this price.There are too many recipes calling for exotic ingredients not available in most markets.The photography is stunning.

This book will tell you more than you will every need to know about pasta. From how to make it, how to cook it, and to what kind of sauce each pasta should be paired with (recipes included). This book would be a great addition to anyone that has a sparked interest in cooking, and especially eating, homemade pasta.

I just received this book and am very anxious to start cooking! I was inspired to start making my own pasta after a recent cooking class vacation in Perugia. Well, I turn to page 186 for the corzetti with sausage, clams and Fennel but am bewildered that there is NO fennel in the ingredients? Just returned from the farmer's market with fresh fennel so I guess I will have to ad-lib this one!! Can't really review the book but the pics are fabulous and now I want my own corzetti stamp! :)

I have been making pasta for a long time now but wanted to find new recipes. Well this book is amazing! So many interesting recipes and new ideas. It is beautifully laid out and has a lot of great information. Highly recommend if you love pasta!

Her birth in a D.P. camp in Germany marked Ettie Zilber with a special responsibility. Ettie's book is a very real first-person narrative of her mother's survival during the Holocaust. It is written in the mother's words, but it is about the Holocaust experience of many family members as well. The book shows an amazing ability to survive, do what needed to be done, and remain hopeful and positive regardless of separation from family members and dealing with all the horrors perpetrated against Jewish people. Her solution was to form very strong bonds with other women walking the same road as she. The hardship was very real and heart-wrenching. It is very well documented with footnotes and references. The book is in 3 parts. After the mother's story, part 2 is about the eldest daughter's 3-week travel to Lithuania and Poland with a long list of names, places, dates, and events. With the help of a guide and visits to Holocaust museums and digging into historical archives she was able to confirm her mother's story and make a few editorial changes to some details. Part 3 was an interesting analysis of the impact on the lives of the children of Holocaust-surviving parents. (The author was actually born in a Displaced Person's camp in Europe after the war ended before her parents---reunited only after the war---immigrated to the US.) Ettie researched this aspect within her own family and with other families living in NYC.

It was an amazing true story of a strong beautiful woman who went through and survived such horrible circumstances during the holocaust in Lithuania. It is amazing and scary to see how neighbors around her and her family turned on them and assisted the Germans in all the atrocities committed during the years of being in a ghetto and concentration camp and even after they were released. I couldn't put this book down!

The book is an accurate account of the authors families experiences during the Holocaust. It is a tribute to her mother and all of the family members who survived and those who perished during this time in history. What her family endured epitomizes"Mans Inhumanity to Man".Exposure to the stories that her mother and father told during her childhood created an intense desire to validate these stories as well as well as walk in their footsteps. And so, her journey began. The book methodically details her journey and the mixture of emotions felt in so doing.From a very personal perspective, she describes the effects on children of Holocaust survivors. She explores the scientific as well as the environmental causes for these intensely personal and painful experiences.Every year, the family members and their children uphold the tradition of gathering at their parens grave in Israel. A good introduction to cybernetics.But the actual thrust of this review is to reassure other buyers that the production woes reported by other buyers appear to be solved. The print is legible, pagination is in order, and this is a legit reprint.You can buy this book without those basic worries.Enjoy!

This book is so mind blowing that i bought 2, so i can give one as a gift to a mathematician i know.Really, Cybernetics is so amazing that probably will be the reason that someone will save the world. Probably a few politicians should read this.

More math than I thought. I was looking for and easier read. But did get an idea about requsite variety that was helpful to my studies.

This print is extremely poor quality, do not be fooled by the "High Quality" tags on the cover page. I cannot even read the text. Since I'm not in the US i have trouble returning the item to Amazon. So just leaving this comment for everyone else to be aware.

Many books have been written on the topic of control system theory. After reading a number of such books I can say without reservation Dr. Ashby's is the best treatment of the subject, bar none. His perspective is unique and wholly comprehensive.To elaborate let me say that one of the goals of any introductory text is to provide a general overview of the subject matter in as clear and concise of manner as possible. Dr. Ashby does one better. Not only does he accomplish this aim, but while doing so he manages to develop a theoretical and technical foundation of understanding that goes right to the bedrock of eternity itself.For instance one of the most primitive but arcane concepts in all physics is entropy. I personally spent decades trying to reduce entropy to a simple understanding but was always confounded by the "entropy is a measure related to heat engines, but also related to disorder," rhetoric. After all, pragmatically what do heat engines and scrambled eggs have in common? I sure wasn't able to connect the dots in any kind of intelligent way. Moreover it seemed no one else could either. After reading dozens of various books on the matter the explanations of the authors always fell short of offering the simple enlightenment I sought. However, in "Intro to Cybernetics" Dr. Ashby not only explores entropy in a way that is drop-dead simple (the entropy factor is overshadowed by a general principle which governs more than a reservoir of heat energy), but he goes on to show how information and control principles are the flip-side of the entropy principle. Tersely, the entropy principle is abstractly about variety or choice (reflected in Boltzmann's S=kLogW), while information and control is about selection and constraint.Everyone has experience with this model. Consider that laundry taken from a dryer and cast on a bed can potentially fall into a multiplicity of different arrangements. But it is only after a cybernetic mechanism uses certain rules of selection to apply some measure of constraint that the state of the laundry converges to an orderly stack. Also consider that a car moving along a roadway literally has innumerable trajectories it can follow at any point along the path. However cars typically arrive safely at their destinations thanks to a control mechanism which uses sophisticated selection rules to apply constraint to the vehicle so as to avoid disastrous outcomes. If you want inspiration for surface pattern design, this is a fantastic resource! All images are black and white and very clear to reproduce. The only text is in the introduction. Fifteen chapters of designs: Stone Age Europe, Neolithic Europe, Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Minoan, Mycenaean, Greek, Chinese, Early Celtic, Barbarian, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Japanese, and Art Deco. Obviously, some chapters denote time periods, where the later chapters are styles (Romaneque, for example) that prevailed in the culture.No one can tell for sure where one period ends and another begins and throughout history, each culture is influenced by another. But this book will give you a good starting point with which to describe the patterns you see in a design and, in some cases, the time period (the first 3 chapters) of the patterns that you see today. I'm not a Zentangle fan only because they seem to be pretentious in the pattern naming schemes, taking ancient patterns and motifs and making up new names for them. This book is a great reference in demystifying the REAL origin of patters and motifs. You'll find, however, that one book won't be enough. Another good book, if you want more historical information as well as great images is "Designs and Patterns From Historic Ornament" by W. and G. Audsley. Also, if you like paisleys, dots, and swirls check out ANY book about Mehndi art. Mehndi art is ancient art of painting the hands, feet, and sometimes other parts of the body for celebratory purposes. Great design inspiration there too.I've included 3 photos to give you a rough idea of the contents of the book. The first 5 pages are words, the rest are all filled with images!

This is a great book for helping generate your own ideas for designs. One reviewer was disappointed that the designs are copyrighted and cannot be used for commercial purposes. Since I am trying to create some designs for possible commercial use, I am using the book only as a source for ideas, that is a "jumping off" place to make an interesting design of my own, without infringing on the copyright. I think this book is a great source of ideas for your own creations, as well as providing designs straight from the pages for personal use. As long as you keep in mind that all the designs are hand drawn and in black and white, and you either want to use the designs in your personal creations or as an inspiration to create new designs, in my opinion you will not be disappointed.

I am a fiber artist and enjoy creating with fabric. Just looking thru the book inspires me and carries me onto new and different ideas. The size of the book reinforces the idea that creativity is endless!

This is a great book for anyone who needs any kind of reference with patterns. It even gives you on some of them a small step by step on how to do it.I had used it back in college and finally decided to purchase it after many year. Much better than researching patterns and motifs online.

I purchased this book for art ideas, and there are a lot of motifs in here. Unfortunately,many of the designs do not appeal to ME, so I had to give it 3 stars and that is the only reason. Others might like more of the designs than I do. I wish this book had the "look inside" feature.

This was great! The story is simple, short, and sparsely illustrated but it still kept the attention of the 4th grade girls in my small group. The story seems to define drama as 1) spreading lies/embellishing and 2) telling other people's secrets. It also includes the llama's reason for being so dramatic - she thinks people will find her boring otherwise. I wish that the story also talked about "drama" in terms of butting into other peoples' business, tattling, and not using positive conflict resolution strategies.There's also a handful of worksheet activities at the end that are actually pretty decent (I usually think included worksheets/activities are lame), and they seem to have the additional aim of promoting positivity vs. negativity.

The kids love talking about the drama llama, easy to remember and use in guidance lessons. Can discuss with students the drama that affects them and how to stop it. Also easy to introduce the word drama. Students experience it, but not always away of the meaning. The only thing wrong was the worksheets were 'eh', but I was able to create my own.

It gets the point across, but the writing is mediocre.

Great book for kids of many ages about a topic that is getting so out of hand. Good for individual counseling and small groups.

Honestly one of my favorite books. I read it years ago and am now gifting it to a young scientist. It is a compelling read that intertwines David's story with the callous approach to nuclear energy in the early 20th century. Honestly this book is just a fun read, that is also informative. The pace of the book keeps up well, and you keep wondering how this could possibly happen. I really love the parts about his science teachers in school noting that he would never properly conduct any experiments, as he would throw out information that didn't stick to his hypothesis or just not test certain factors at all.

Had to be read for Pre-AP Chemistry. Really creeped me out that a high school kid could get a hold of all that stuff so easily and that he had no conscience about exposing everyone to all of that toxicity. For a guy so smart, he was really pretty dumb. My little brother who is a Boy Scout really liked the book too.

I learned a lot in this book. The last chapter has an anti-nuclear bent focused on the poor economics, but never detailed why nuclear isnâ€™t economical. I was surprised both by how many disasters I had been unaware of and how few power plants are currently online.

I really disliked how this story was written like a 200 page long newspaper article, BUT personal feelings aside it was an interesting story that actually taught me a lot about nuclear power and chemistry.

Nice little story about what a kid can accomplish if he is interested in abstract subjects. I read this because it reminded me of myself in my teens when I was more interested in teaching myself than most anything else. My subject at the time was mechanical. Today I am a Mechanical Engineer and nearing retirement. One of my hobbies now is collecting radio active minerals from around the world.

I found something to admire in David Hahn . . . in terms of his imagination and resourcefulness in putting together the components of a breeder reactor . . . despite not being able to spell.I liked this book and I thought the writer presented a clear picture of what this literally radioactive Boy Scout was all about . . .It is a shame that those around David . . . for the most part . . were not more interested in him --- to nurture him and guide him in the right direction. He could have been a scientist in the truest sense of the word.More things I also found fascinating was the uses of radium in ordinary households (like clock paint and fish bait). . . until we find out that it caused all manners of cancer. How Hahn was able to get enough radioactive material to build a neutron gun -- for example, tritium from night-vision sights. How a book on chemistry experiments inspired him.I find David Hahn's story-- extraodinary. And I am sad for him and at the same time --- believe that I am all the richer for reading about this frail genius.

As both an Eagle Scout, Scout leader, and working in the commercial nuclear energy field, I felt that the book had a very anti-scout and anti-nuclear slant.The story of David Hahn, minus the anti-scout and anti-nuclear slant, was good. It shows that the current eduction system does not look for a student that excels in one particular area, but teach to the "average" student.

TOTALLY a disappointment! Nothing like what was summarized. WAY too much detail on radioactive material and hardly any on the boys life. Didnâ€™t even finish it, it never got better.

Even though this series is written in the manga style, I learn something new about the history of Japanese cuisine with every volume. There are even 1 or 2 recipes included at the end of each book. Even read in order, the back story of the individual characters is still a bit disjointed and hard to follow. The back stories are not that closly interwoven into the culinary stories, so character devleopment comes in second to food. So, if you are looking for a manga story with food thrown in, try elsewhere. If you want to know more about how the Japanese developed their cuisine and and a bit of their food culture, this short series may do just fine.

I somehow thought I would learn more about Japanese food and drink from this volume, one of several compiling the episodes in a long-running serial. But the info is doled out in tiny tidbits, and the underlying plot becomes repetitive and tedious, as is inevitable when a serial is reassembled into a book. After a while you just don't care anymore about the tension between the young reporter hero and his father or his bosses, even if it does involve fine food and sake. Oh well.

Love this series. I wish more of the series would get translated to English. Although this is probably the most incongruent of the books in the English translations it is still worth reading. Although labeled as a Sake volume the book lacks unity and meanders away from Sake as its core topic. If you are interested in reading Oishinbo I would not start with this volume but this still has interesting information.

My experience has been pretty mixed - some are good, most are average, a few have been awful - but the Taskforce stories released by Taylor are among the ones I've enjoyed the most and BLACK FLAG is no exception.In BLACK FLAG, Taylor wastes no time placing Pike, Jennifer, Knuckles and Brett in harm's way - and of course the thrill is reading how they dispense their own brand of justice (read: retaliation) in return.You don't need to have read previous books in the Pike Logan series to enjoy this - just don't go looking for a lot of character development or deep philosophical discussions. Pike Logan's world is very black and white - there's right and wrong, good guys and bad guys, and then there's Pike, the good guy willing to do bad things because sometimes it's necessary.If you enjoy reading thrillers with protagonists with that worldview then you should be reading Brad Taylor - or said another way: if you're a fan of fictional heroes Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath or Gabriel Allon then you should be a fan of Pike Logan as well.

The task force gets involved in a modern day piracy adventure! And, they are adding crewmember, Jennifer. Full of action-adventure, the plot races to conclusion in Jamaica. Some authors can pack a punch in a short story. This is an interesting action short story but does not do anything with these established characters. What has made his long form stories so good is the deeper nature of the relationships and the crazy bad guys. This has very generic bad guys and is just in mission mode most of the time. You can guess the story arc from very early on and it follows it without much deviation.Not a waste of money per se since not very expensive and you get an intro to the new book, but was like seeing an impressive looking cream puff and then finding it is filled with cool-whip when you bite into it.

Another exciting Brad Taylor short. After meeting with some Irish dude Knuckles agrees with his bright idea to going after Blackbeard's 'treasure' off the coast of Jamaica... and then the real fun begins. Who uses the Black Flag? Why pirates of course! So guess who Grolier Recovery Services team run into? A fast fun read. Another thumbs up for Brad Taylor.

Interesting storyline, could hardly put it down... Love Pike Logan and his team... on to the next book of their adventure...

Brad Taylor never disappoints. Another great read that I was unable to put down. I've come to love these stories as much as any series in any genre.

Great reading. Thanks for the mystery of the action and a little bit of information about the ends that our enemies are using to get to the things that are needed to get to the secrets we have. Thanks for another great experience in intrigue. Looking forward to seeing what's the next one.

Robert Parkes is a fantastic author on this topic.I really enjoyed all the parts of the book. Very informative, detailed and well guided.Overall, it was a great and enjoyable read.

Procrastination is one thing i have suffered from and its a habit i have struggled to get rid of but upon buying this book, i have been helped. This book contains strategies that can help anyone get over this bad habit that delays personal development. You will enjoy this book and get tremendous help from reading it. I highly recommend this well book.Easy to follow this book.

Very good book, extremely dead on with why I procrastinate. I found his book easier to implement and his systems easy to adopt. Its a matter of making and having good habits. Enjoyed reading this book and agree in the examples that the author gave us. It has very good tips to manage time efficiently and easy to do. I recommend it to anyone.

This is an excellent book that truly helped me. It explains each and every reason for procrastination and then gives helpful advice on how to address and counteract them. I was able to connect to so many of the points described. This book is a must-have for anyone looking to increase productivity in his/her life!

This book has blessed me tremendously it has opened up my eyes as to why I truly procrastinate realizing and understanding it's not because I'm lazy it's because I need to put things in perspective I am so grateful that this book came at a time in my life when I see myself doing greater things in life.
