Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of September 2017: There’s so much to admire in My Absolute Darling: acute emotional insight, precise and evocative writing about the natural world, and pacing worthy of an action movie. How can this possibly be a debut? But some people live up to their names, and Gabriel Tallent, whose first novel this is, writes with bravura more experienced authors can only envy. His story, which feels a little like a girl-power fairy tale come true, starts dark. Fourteen-year old Julia, called Turtle, or sometimes Kibble, lives with her paranoid, survivalist father in the wilds of Mendocino County. Their ruin of a house has boarded-up windows and “spindled wooden railings overgrown with climbing roses and poison oak.†If Turtle is that rose, then her father is the poison oak: his touch (and he touches Turtle) leads to trouble. But he’s taught his daughter to shoot and forage -- she can “decipher†the woods, even at night -- and those skills serve her well when she finally starts to free herself from his control. One of the delights of this novel is the way Tallent reveals another culture – another world, really – coexisting in Mendocino, where middle-aged women practice yoga naked and swear by “the goddess†while their sons joke about hippies reading Finnegans Wake to their peyote plants. These flashes of humor and evidence of the sometimes goofy pleasures of civilization are like beacons lighting the way to a better life for Turtle, if only she can make her way out of the woods. --Sarah Harrison Smith, Amazon Book Review

I bought this book based on rave reviews, and maybe I'm going against the prevailing opinion, but I found it grueling, painful, and excessive. I wasn't prepared for the themes of abuse, incest, a sick man's obsession about post-apocalyptic survival with his daughter, and the grotesquely twisted forms "love" takes. Stephen King proclaimed this a masterpiece, but I should have remembered that he's a writer who deals in horror, psychological suspense, and atmospherics, and it occurred to me afterwards how subjective reviews always are (so take mine too with a grain of salt). I was drawn to the idea of a young girl ultimately emerging victorious, her soul and spirit defiant, her cunning and powers almost superhuman, and the descriptions of the natural world of the northern CA coast are lush and intricately detailed, like a dreamscape. I wondered: is it meant to be like a myth, a nightmare journey? The dialog is stilted, the violence prolonged, the perils extraordinary. I admit, I kept going, but at times it made me feel squeamish and sordid, and overall, it was an exhausting book. I'd say, just be forewarned that's the territory you're entering, and decide.
Echoing other recent reviews, I feel compelled to warn other readers that this book is graphic and disturbing in its description of the brutal and protracted incest and rape of a young girl by her father, and the father’s eventual rape and torture of another, younger child. I purchased the book after seeing excellent reviews (Oprah!), intrigued by the theme of a young girl finding her way in the natural world. When I read the first passage of incest I revisited the reviews in more detail but kept reading, encouraged that the protagonist would find strength and redemption. Arguably that never happens. I’m not squeamish or wary of difficult subjects. This was beyond anything remotely necessary but rather screamed of shock value for no apparent legitimate reason. Furthermore I found the protagonist fairly unlikable throughout most of the book. It’s well written to be sure. But just be warned this book is dark, disturbing, and absolutely unrelenting. I wish I could unread it. I pushed through hoping for redemption and deeply regret it. As a mother of two girls, this is a story I wish I hadn’t read.
The story of a female incest survivor written in third person present creating a sense of inescapable immediacy. There is nothing about Turtle that resonates with what it is to be a survivor of incest. This is the book a predator wants to read about sexual abuse. Reviews of the book and the book itself all suggest that Turtle kinda likes it. It's there even at the very end, once she's taken care of business as only a man could imagine she might -- with pages of violence right out of a straight to video action movie. The doctor checking her wounds is "excited by her case and her injuries, which Turtle liked. He loved this part of his job, she could tell."This is a fantasy that makes incest thrilling and titillating. Everything is exaggerated so that no normal predator has to identify with what they're reading in these pages. Exaggerated so no one will have to recognize themselves. Blown up so it is unrecognizable. It's not that we shouldn't have the stomach, the courage, to look this epidemic straight in the face. We should. The story of incest as a mostly invisible, silent murder of the victim's soul has never been told. The story of ordinary men molesting their children and their siblings. It's a novel that needs to be written. It's a novel that publishers need to be willing to sell.
SPOILER ALERT. Some good elements, some good dialogues, and some believable insights about a girl raised by a narcissistic and possessive father. On the negative side, the plot itself was hard to swallow. I had trouble believing that Martin would conveniently walk out of Turtle's life for 3 months and suddenly return with Cayenne; his justification for abandoning her just didn't make sense to me in the context of his possessiveness, especially knowing that Jacob was in the picture. Or that two 15-year-old boys today would share a dialogue such as (Brett) "How's it any different from objectifying her for her intelligence?" / (Jacob replies) "Her intelligence cannot be abstracted from her personality, whereas her blindness is incidental to who she is." From chapter 12 onward, my notes read "Argh." "Oh brother." "I hate this idiot girl. Why am I still reading this book?". "Ack." "Wtf, this is beyond sick." And (when Martin contemplates killing them both, in Chapter 20) "That would be a great ending. Both these unlikable characters GONE." I finished the novel to try to figure out why NPR and Stephen King would have praised it so much. And that, I really don't understand.
I had high hopes for this book, but it did nothing for me. Stephen King (and many other reviewers) proclaimed it wonderful, and I love some of King's books so I gave it a toss, but Tallent is no Stephen King. Incest is a bit of a third rail for me. In some ways, I felt like the incestuous relationship between Turtle and her dad was really just in there to shock the reader. It didn't serve any other purpose. Had Tallent removed the incest, and kept everything else the same, her tale of triumph and rising above circumstances could have been just as meaningful without alienating readers like myself (and many other on here) who don't want to read in graphic detail about a father's horrific sexual abuse of his child. But that's just my two cents...
