A very good if sometimes exhausting history of the City. Excellent introduction to this vibrant merchant city with a long history of enterprise and tolerance.

Mak is able to weave together history and contemporary sights with the clear and engaging style of a journalist. I read it while I was in Amsterdam, and it was more interesting than a guidebook, for sure. I ended up getting his "In Europe," after I got home and found the same blend.

Despite more recent releases about Amsterdam, Geert Mak's book remains the standard. Authoritative, detailed and always interesting, Mak explains the reasons why Amsterdam differs from all other European capitals. The treatment of early Amsterdam and the Golden Age are especially fascinating, with the insights into Rembrandt's life a real highlight for me.

I was assigned this book as a pre-departure read for a college study abroad program and have been thrilled by Mak's descriptions, research, and integration of primary sources to reveal an evolution of Amsterdam's culture from its very beginnings to the complex identity of the city today. It is not too heavy and is broken up into easy to read sections, so you can easily start and finish stories while in a waiting room. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about Amsterdam before visiting.

Literate and interesting. It spans the long history of the city. I got lost at times in all the names but overall it paints a thorough picture of the city as it evolved.

Interesting and good overview of Amsterdam. For anybody interested in a readable history of this city this functions as a good primer.

This book reminds me of an outstanding history teacher who maintains the interest of his students with a series of fascinating and relevant anecdotes. I enjoyed reading it and I feel that I now have a much better appreciation of this city. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a visit to Amsterdam.

I was looking for a book on Amsterdam's history, and had heard of Mak's popularity in the Netherlands, so I decided to give this book a go. I'm very glad I did. The book is a great history - well told, easy to read, and full of little details and anecdotes to bring the story of this city to life.

While hopelessly adrift after losing my spouse, I ordered this book, along with several others. Initially, while reading it I was put off by the format and the fact that is centers around events, and then has passages by many different people. When I started reading it, I questioned why I should be listen to someone who's spouse died from cancer, leukemia, or in a car accident if my spouse did not. So, I put the book down and moved on to another one.A few months later while sifting through my wife's copious possessions and belongings, I saw the book, and started reading the chapter appropriately entitled, "The Belongings." I was stunned and humbled by the writings of the contributors and it finally clicked in my head about the purpose and meaning of this book.Everyone who loses a spouse suffers through a different and unique experience, but there are common threads that connect all of them. This book is a perfect companion that offers insight and words from those who have experienced a similar loss. It is not from some detached academic engaged in mental masturbation for personal gain - this is raw emotion.In fact, after my best friend's wife recently passed away from cancer at the age of 53, I gave him a copy of this book to help him cope with the ongoing and daily struggle that survivors must undertake.

Probably this book hits home with many people. A spouse is losing their other half almost on a daily basis especially if you live in a senior environment. Spouses all seem to go through the first period of being in a fog. Then they get forgetful and start to worry about their memory. Then they wonder how to plan the service. Many of the men and women go through their experience and you will find you are not alone. Excellent read.

After seeing a couple of excerpts from this book on Amazon, and references to it by a friend with a legal practice, I purchased this book. I worked for the police for a few years to put myself through school, and have come across a few bits of legal humor first hand.The book took *much* longer to arrive than expected, arriving about two weeks later than the rest of my order. No worries, I figured this must be a book very much in demand. Then it arrived, and I eagerly cracked it, looking for little gems of legalese to brighten my day.Sadly, the funny bits were few and far between. The book reads like a lawyer wrote it (which he did) to impress judges and other lawyers. Several times the author includes latin or legal terms without explanation. A small glossary might have helped here, instead of resorting to a dictionary to understand. Some of the excerpts might have benefited from some background information. Several items were a page or longer, and utterly wearying to search for the humor within, where there was any.It's enjoyable enough of a read, and certainly not a horrible book, either in terms of the writing or the subject matter. At the same time, it, and the reading experience, would have been vastly improved by a little more editing, and a bit of clarification for the lay reader.Overall, not bad, but very slow in a few spots.

I purchased this book on Kindle because I had read very funny excerpts on Facebook. The book does include some funny bits. However, the horrendous formatting overshadowed the book's merits. Many hopefully humorous anecdotes were ruined by the fact that the punch lines and often other portions of the dialogue were missing from my screen. Perhaps these problems were particular to the Kindle formatting and were complicated by formatting upgrades in newer Kindle equipment. If this book is not readable on older Kindles, the sales descriptions should note that fact. In addition, if this author paid a copy editor, he should have his money refunded. The errors in spelling and grammar were inexcusable. Both the author and his readers are being shortchanged.

It is amazing to me that with the several reviews noting that the electronic (Kindle) version of this book is incompatible with Kindle (numerous pages or line are cutoff or missing) that Amazon is still selling this edition. But I guess that no one at Amazon ever reads these reviews or does anything about them.The content of the book is, as at least one other reviewer has noted, not uniformly (or nearly) as funny as the excerpts, but the book would still be worth its price if it were readable. The Kindle edition is not readable.

If you need a good laugh, this is the book for you. I was laughing so hard I was crying and these days, we all need a good laugh.

Let's just say that this is one of those books that keeps me laughing. Sometimes I shake my head at the stupidity of humanity, so to see such ridiculousness happen in what should be a serious situation kind of makes me question my sanity. Still, this book is a definite laugh, no more different that watching Funniest Home Videos.

This book is hilarious! Some of the snippets have a bit too much legal jargon, and it is a little easy to get confused if you are not familiar with normal court proceedings, but for the most part it is easy to understand. I've been meaning to buy this book for a year after seeing excerpts and I'm so glad I did!

I think this is both funny and unique. It has some funny stories and some that make you think 'did they really do that?' and some were really odd.

I had been aware of this book for some time and finally decided to purchase it because of my interest in criminal justice. It is very interesting and kept me going back to the reading. Most of it kept me interested though there were some incidents, not really humerous, that I found myself saying, "Did this actually happen in a courtroom??". Many incidents would make one laugh out loud. It's well worth reading if you're into courtroom drama. I would definitely recommend it.

If you are seeking fairly simple homework assignments for someone who has quite limited Spanish background this is a fine book. But in our case our son was returning to Spanish after some time off and we were seeking out a simple yet effective workbook to help him to refresh his memory as we started up homeschooling Spanish with a tutor. She quickly moved us away from this book and towards other books that were more comprehensive for the price. Avencemos, student edition was more expensive but ended up to be a better overall book because it combines instruction and numerous practice materials. I gave the book 4 stars because it is well laid out and the sequencing of terms and concepts closely tracks the way that Spanish is taught in most middle and high schools. But, this received little usage.

These books don't teach Spanish. Basically used for copywork and matching English to Spanish words. My kids felt it was a waste of their time.

My niece, 10, is struggling to learn her roots being that she’s been raised with her non-Spanish speaking parents. My brother understands and speaks reasonable well but doesn’t do it actively with her.This book series is doing her well. I sit with her and practice the lessons. She loves it. I made her flash cards of some of the lessons for her to look back at while she’s studying alone.I started with the Spanish 1 (K-5) .. and now she’s working on the Spanish 2 (K-5). I’ve also purchased Spanish 1 & 2 (6-8).

I teach an extracurricular Spanish class to middle schoolers (6-8 grade). I bought this book a few weeks into the year and really enjoy it. It’s a good mixture of Spanish and Castellano with fun activities my kids have really liked.

The first page of this book asks to write the numbers in Spanish without one page for review. This is just the beginning. There are questions to answer but no review pages to review first. I'm not sure what they were thinking when creating this book. A review workbook needs to have a review section. I just wasted my money and will now have to purchase another workbook for my child.

Got these books for my daughter.. I feel these books have been a good gradient for keeping her connected to the little bit of spanish she can understand or speak..
