My ten-year-old reads well above grade level, but is still reluctant. Like many boys, he just doesn't want to sit still long enough to get through a story! He likes adventure stories, so I thought he would enjoy listening to the audio version of "Unbroken," while following along in the book. No dice. I lost him at the word "dirigible."So I was delighted to learn that a young adult version was on the horizon, and I immediately pre-ordered both the Kindle and audio versions. I am pleased to report that I think this will do the trick.Of course, the first thing I did upon receiving the new version, was to turn to Chapter One to see if the word "dirigible" had been changed! It is now "airship." Then I went back to the beginning and did a side-by-side comparison of both. The changes were immediately apparent:On the first page, the previous version read: Somewhere on the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean, Army Air Forces bombardier and Olympic runner Louie Zamperini lay across a small raft, drifting westward.The new version read: Somewhere on the Pacific Ocean, American military airman and Olympic runner Louie Zamperini lay on a small raft, drifting.In a nutshell, Hillenbrand deleted "the endless expanse of," and simplified Zamperini's title from "Army Air Forces bombardier," to "American military airman."Looking randomly through the two books, I'm seeing other instances of abridgement, as well as simplified language. I have high hopes that my young reader will now enjoy this story. I'm excited at the prospect, as I think our children need to read more stories about people like Mr. Zamperini. He is easily the bravest, most remarkable person I've ever read about, and a fine example of what we hope our young people will choose to emulate.A final thought: I'm an avid reader, but I wish this version had been out when I read the original. While still long, it is shorter than the first book, and I wouldn't consider this one to be at all "dumbed down." It would not be inappropriate for an adult to read this version instead of the other.

As a middle school librarian, I wanted to share this unbelievable, inspirational tale, but the more graphic & violent scenes in the adult version were disturbing and overwhelming.Laura Hillenbrand has taken out some of those more graphically violent parts of her adult version, but still communicated the depravity and inhumane treatment of Allied POW's by the Japanese. Unlike the Nazis, the Japanese were never brought to trial for crimes against humanity, and continue to teach revisionist history to the generations since.

This book is amazing. I had previously read the full adult version and I was afraid that the "young readers' version" would skimp on the details. I read this book to my 9 year-old son and 12 year-old daughter. They could not wait until bedtime each night to hear more of Louis Zamperini's amazing story.It has a great message about the power of forgiveness and faith in Jesus Christ.

Excellent story. Very disappointed that the "F" word had to be put in the young adult version. I purposely bought the young adult version for my 12 year old daughter to read hoping it would be a clean version. The word was only used once and could have been avoided all together. Other than that the book was excellent.

If one wants to understand the Greatest Generation, what they accomplished, and what they endured, this book provides insight as to why they became known as the Greatest Generation. Here is an example of complete, unrelenting dedication to his country, ready to make any sacrifice to save his country, and almost paid the ultimate price in doing so. This book is a revelation when it comes to showing what a prisoner of war experienced and the horrific treatment by the captors. It is also a revelation about resilience, forgiveness, and restoration of a life. Louie Zamperini is an inspiration, and he made this book well worth reading.

Im glad I read this book. I would recommend it to the more mature youth reader because of the content. Hillenbrand bring the reader to the verge of tears, fear, and tragedy over and over in this compelling version. I would highly recbyhis book for the young person interested in WWll history.

I was 7 when WW II began and lived near a Air Force training field so my fascination with WW II planes was instilled in me as a youngster. My brother ended up in the 8th Air Force and saw active duty in Europe doing exactly what the book depicts. My wife’s uncle was a P.O.W in Japan so we saw first hand what occurred to these captives and how it affected there entire post war lives. In addition I loved running track in HS. Book really hit home. Should be required reading for all current students.

Wonderful account of survival during WWII. From survival at sea after being shot down to survival in a prisoner of war camp. A grueling day by day account of beatings and this man's endurance to carry on. And at war's end, the capacity of him to forgive his tormentor. A great story.

I have absolutely no knowledge on this subject. What I have read here was informative and did answer some of the questions I had and let me know there were other questions I needed to ask. I checked on a few of the article's validity with my lawyer and he agreed with them, which is a recommendation of its own. This book let me know what I need to be aware of and what to have in place for the future. This was purchased with a couple of other books on the same subject and I recommend all of them.

There is much information provided in this book, however, not much more than can already be researched by surfing on Internet. Having gone through Medicare and Private Insurance claims for my parents, I already knew much of the information presented in the book. It may be good reading for anyone who has not gone through an experience concerning finding care for elderly persons, to know what to expect and to prepare for the future whether it be for elderly relatives or for oneself. It gives many Internet sites for additional information but as already stated, one can surf the net to find out the same information.

An invaluable book for planning for long term care, whether you need it now or are planning for it later. Includes many suggestions you may not have thought of, such as Veterans Administration benefits, and the resources of the state Area Agencies on Aging. Points out important facts such as Medicare does not pay for long term care.

It really gave me a general overview of LTSS, but if you want more details then you need something else... maybe a case management text book.

I've read this several times along with another book on Long Term Care so I can really understand what people go through when dealing with their long term care needs. Whether you plan on being a counselor or not, I believe this is a good book for anyone to read because it establishes how our sufficiency in life is in Christ and we need not seek other means and methods like psychology in order to be more holy as He is holy. This book has many things to say. In addition to desiring to help others with the sins and struggles in their lives, you will walk away challenged, convicted, and eager to mortify the sin in your own flesh.

I am a Pentecostal (need I say more for my subject line comment?). Regardless, there was a lot of good information in Mr. MacArthur's book. The book was used in a college level class entitled "Pastoral Care and Counseling". I could not agree more with Dr. MacArthur's dogma about the use of Scripture in counseling. IT IS A MUST! He gives great substantiation for the use of the Bible for the "soul work" that is necessary in complete and successful counseling. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in biblical counseling (and those that are against Bible-based counseling to consider SERIOUSLY).

I really liked the book though it was difficult to get into at first. As a mental health professional, I have a little trouble with completely dismissing any use of traditional therapies. However, I do understand the concept that the Bible is sufficient.

This was a very well written and good resource for anyone who wants to study the topic of Biblical Counseling. A must have for mature Believers, lay leaders and pastors.

Great book. Provides a distinct overview of Biblical counseling that is very easy to understand and it provides a launching point for all those seeking to be a Biblical counselor.

John MacArthur's books are always packed with great Biblical information. For the nouthetic counselor or someone taking classes to be a nouthetic counselor or for the Christian who is in the mission field, this is a great read and reference source.

Excellent resource for Biblical Counselling. Thoughtful and scholarly approach to understanding and applying biblical principles to the sorrows and suffering encountered in modern life.

I love Duneier's work, going back to "Slim's Table." But this book captures something else; embedded within the text is Duneier's compassion for those he's working with, and who he is writing about. Almost like Vankatesh's accounts of the underground economy and Chicago gangs, this work explores how life on the streets, mostly through "legitimate" book selling, is just that: legitimate. Yet, Duneier delves into the complex nature of sponsorship and kinship in this work; how the men of the streets in Greenwich Village look out for one another and lead lives as meaningful as anyone with a "nine-to-five" job. Ethnographic accounts should always be approached with caution, in that they serve a purpose, usually the author's thesis or hypothesis. Duneier, however, really cares about the people with whom he works and is looking for change. His supplemental DVD with a lecture and video on this book really captures that. A must read for sociology students.

I can't say that I've ever had an interest in sociology; I happened across this book via a link on the This American Life homepage while looking for something completely unrelated.Wow, thank goodness for circumstance. This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in urban life. Everyone -- urban dwellers, suburbanites, country folk -- has their own preconceived notions about the unhoused. Mr. Duneier spends years (on and off) with the "written materials" vendors in Greenwich Village and exposes a wealth of information that the rest of us would otherwise never imagine.Written in a style that's very readable considering its academic relevance, this is a book that can't be overlooked. Holiday shopping for your urban friends is complete; this book is it.

Sidewalk takes you on an interesting adventure to a darker part of New York. Maybe not so dark if you visit, but the homeless there have another story to tell. Mitchell Duneier takes a trip to New York's Greenwich Village and dives into the lives of those less fortunate. Many of these men browsing the streets for items to sell at their tables gave up or even made the choice to be homeless. Check this book out and see for yourself what kind of society lives and breathes on the streets of this little part of town.

Sidewalk gives a great insight into the world of street vendors and panhandlers in New York from about two decades ago. Interesting read, so if you get this for your sociology class you won't be disappointed.

Needed for ethnography course.

This was by far the most enjoyable book I was required to read for my urban sociology class. Instead of grouping entire populations into one analysis, as so many of my other socilogical readings about urbanites, Mitch works from direct and personal experience with real urban individuals. The material reads like a story, and draws you in as you meet each new character and learn about thier lives. The insight I gained from this text opened my eyes to so much more in my sociological studies.

This is among the best ethnographies I have ever read. Duneier's work will open your eyes to life on the sidewalk and make you feel as though you have actually encountered the people of whom he writes. You will never think about homelessness the same way again. Very well done.

This was a very interesting book. I purchased it for a Community Studies class at my college. Honestly I was not expecting anything interesting and was prepared to bear my way though it for the sake of the class and my grade. I was very pleasantly surprised about how interesting this book actually is. It is written in a way that is very conversational, almost story teller like, yet it is still packed with interesting information. This book shows aspects and connections within society that most people will never see or understand. It is a window into a society within our society. You become attached to people this book writes about, you want to read more so you can find out what choice they made, and why. Duneier is an outsider submerging himself into a society unlike anything he has known for the sake of information and exploration and there is something fascinating about how he perceives the people he encounters and their lifestyles. I feel like I learned a lot from this book and have really changed my perspective on things I would have never before considered. I am really glad my teacher chose this book out of all the books that could have worked because I really leaned some valuable things through reading it. It was both captivating and informative. The book came very quickly, within a few days of purchase so that was great. Also this book was very reasonably priced for how good of a read it was.
