This book sadly may misinform the reader who, like myself is an introvert, not to mention rather out of date with information. After reading this book I collected some new literature based on the careers in this text and was rather disappointed with the material in the book. Don't believe everything you read which stands the testament of truth and time of you are a freethinker like myself. Do your own research, provide your own experience, and by all means, avoid this book.

First of all, I am glad that a book was finally written on this topic, since it points out the hell most introverted and shy people go through trying to find, and keep, suitable employment. The unfortunate fact is that in our society extroverts are the great majority and they have structured most workplaces to fit their personality type. Let's face it, there are a lot of jobs that could be done quietly and privately if those in charge, and co-workers, would just let you alone to do your work.As for the alternatives listed in this book, well, I have some familiarity with most of them:1) Writer: it is extremely difficult to actually earn your living as a writer in today's world. The days when you had your choice of hundreds of magazines that you could submit to between books is long gone. I remember reading that most working writers do not even earn minimum wage for all the time that they put in. True, you could probably make it as a technical writer, but that means working closely with marketing and engineering types as a "team", so why bother?2) Artist: If you have the talent and drive, then go ahead. Chances are if you are truly an artist you couldn't live without creating art anyway. Once again however, actually paying the rent with it is something else. There is a reason that the phrase "starving artist" exists. You could become a commercial artist, but that also involves "teams" and marketing people, so why bother?3) Research: This is only a possibility if you have an advanced degree and tolerance for the academic world.4) Computers: this is a very viable alternative if you have the training and aptitude. Much depends on your individual boss when it comes to how much independence you actually have.5) Mail Carrier: every time I have looked into postal jobs I've gotten nothing but the run around. Most postal jobs seem to go to the friends and relatives of people already working for the Postal Service.6) Park Ranger: Whenever I tried to obtain a job with the Bureau of Land Mangement for the last 30 years I have always been told that there was a "hiring freeze." Even if you score highly on the rating scale of the Office of Personnel Management, a veteran or minority candidate can out score you easily with their "bonus points."7) Security: most security firms seem to want either military or police training and experience. The shy introvert is not their first choice.If you want to try for any of these careers then more power to you. However, as this book itself points out- don't give up your day job.What alternatives do I suggest? Well, as an extreme INFJ in his 40's that is once again between jobs, I really don't have any....

So, you're just not a people person, huh?? Prefer to work alone?? Not much interested in surrounding yourself with coworkers every day?? Searching around for a career where you can be allowed to work by yourself most of the time?? This book is worth checking out, then, but don't stop here."Careers for Introverts..." takes the reader through a few of the more solitary careers available, mainly writer, researcher, artist, forest ranger, security guard, computer programmer/operator and mail carrier. Each career has a short chapter dedicated to it where important information such as training/education, salary and working conditions are discussed. In each chapter an experienced person in that field (writing, letter carrier, etc) talks openly and candidly about the pros and cons (artists & writers often take a long time to establish reputations and money often rolls in sporadically; letter carriers require good memories for detail and the ability to work in all weather conditions, etc).The potential reader should note that many of these careers have a relatively low earning potential (with the possible exception of computers), and in the case of artists and writers, one is very likely to find themselves doing something completely unrelated to art or writing until they are established or have a good, finished product to sell. Also, where postal workers and forest rangers are concerned, there are often far more people looking for a job than there are jobs for them to fill.Overall, the book is good for what it covers, but I find it hard to believe that with so many career options available nowadays, far less than a dozen are highlighted here. I'm sure that a good 20+ more careers would make the book more appealing and useful. It is helpful to read of someone who actually does one of these careers for a living, but I'm willing to bet that 8 out of 10 readers who pick this book up will not be establishing themselves as stained glass artists or live near large forested areas. Finally, note that the book is, as of this writing in 2001, three years old. Testing requirements for these jobs (especially forest rangers and mail carriers) as well as the list of resources/organizations to contact may have changed since its publication.Is it a worthwhile resource, then?? Yes, it's worth the time to read (though maybe not worth the money), but I would recommend checking out other job related resources as well.

I've thumbed this book in mild, introverted amusement a couple of times, but really, it doesn't tell you anything you can't find on a website out there.It could be that half the people you work with at your job are, in fact, introverts, and they're doing whatever you're doing. It's not a disease, and people can adapt.And frankly, it's all fine and good to say 'be a writer' or 'be an artist', but that hardly helps as these are professions one rarely can plan out with any certainty unless they are in the service of something other than yourself.A couple of professions are suspiciously missing, though I guess they have their reasons. Professional mercenary might be good (if you're into that sort of thing) or professional hitman, since that seems like an area you can have plenty of alone time as you trail a potential target or intimidate witnesses.Surprisingly, truck driver is missing, though mail service is included. Go figure.

I work as a dishwasher and i bet i make more than the average writer/artist. i keep my back to everyone and pretty much amloved by all because i never complain. i just work and go home.depending on restaurant and city you can do pretty well.

The design uses little space and makes good use of organic fertilizers such as compost and manure. But the book fails in several major ways that need to be addressed by the author.The book is in desperate need of editing. There are lots of punctuation and capitalization mistakes, and there are a number of run on sentences. Page 20 includes the line, "In the picture below you will see an example of a traditional brick wall built dry without mortar." The problem is there is no picture on that page. Keyhole Gardening includes three blank pages for notes, along with two blank pages at the front and four more in the back, all of which could have been left out.What bothered me most is that so little of the book deals with keyhole gardening. The author spends 28 pages discussing his top ten vegetables without relating this back to the main topic, and this is in a book only 88 pages long. More pages are spent on companion planting. The FAQ section repeats information already in the book.I have questions on this topic that were never addressed. For example, the keyhole gardens shown on the front cover have roughly a 30 degree slope. How do you prevent erosion on a cone with such steep sides? The base of the garden includes huge quantities of organic matter such as dead leaves, twigs, vegetable scraps and manure. Won't the garden sink as this material decomposes, potentially causing problems for the plants growing in it? The book discusses how to start a keyhole garden but nothing on how it is maintained from one year to the next. Do you take it apart at the end of the growing season and start from scratch in spring?My apologies for being so negative, but the book had a lot of promise and I felt let down once I finished it. I can't recommend it to others and I'm not certain whether I will keep my copy.

Can't speak from experience yet from making the keyhole garden, but we're saving our cardboard and will be building one in the spring. We've had a huge garden for years, but have been plagued by wild potato vine that infiltrates everything. We lost our strawberry and asparagus beds to it and if we don't keep on the weed daily, it quickly grows to cover everything. (If anyone knows of a solution to that pest, do comment.) The keyhole garden is small enough that we can put weed cloth down first and cover this with cardboard and the soil mixture recommended. We'll most likely still get weeds, but hopefully not from the vine that has given us so much trouble, and weeding will be on a much smaller scale. This little book is almost a pamphlet, it's so short, but the information is clearly presented with photos and diagrams. I had seen something similar in a woman's magazine years ago, 70s, 80s? (wish I could remember which one and when) that did something similar, except they had you plant right on the ground, rather than in a raised bed. Theirs was 9 feet across, had approximately three 3-foot concentric circles in which you planted the tallest and most water needy plants close the the compost bin at the core then, progressively put the plants that needed less water or were vining in the outermost rings. They instructed you to water only the compost bin, whereas James Paris doesn't say anything about watering the center compost bin in his booklet. It had a path to the compost bin much like the wedge path the keyhole garden has. We tried the magazines's garden, and it worked well, so this raised version will most likely work too and make for a bit less bending.

This book is easy to read and great for beginners interested in keyhole gardening. I did expect a bit more information. One can read from cover to cover in a short time.

If you buy only one book on the subject of polymer clay mini-foods, this one will serve you well. In its 8th printing as of 2011. If you're a fan of basic English foods, all the better. Clay brand used: Fimo. Excellent info on mixing realistic colors for specific items. Sections on raw meats, raw poultry, salami, cheeses, pork pies, fish and shellfish are especially good. Included: Prawns, oysters, crabs and lobsters. Downsides: Nothing on making green onions and leeks, but the author's website has instructions for them. Since the focus of this book is on fresh market foods and generic bakery goods, there's nothing on fancy desserts. You'll need a different book for them. No expensive equipment is needed to make items illustrated. However, a manual pasta machine is strongly recommended for clay conditioning because standard Fimo is a stiff material.

Angie Scarr is a very talented teacher. I purchased this book 2 years ago and love the clear step by step tutorials.I gave my niece this book and polymer clay a few days ago ( she is here on vacation from the Philippines) because she loved all my polymer collections that I made from this book. This will be the 2nd time buying it. It's so handy especially when I'm making produce and bake goods for my nativity scenes.

I LOVE this book. I've kept it for 12 years because I am always going back to it to learn something new, or to refresh my memory. The instructions are clear & concise. The instructions are easy to follow, and the pictured items are simple to duplicate. A perfect book for anyone's crafting collection!

Get this book while you can! My dolls have a kitchen full of Re Ment minature food but they have a distinct lack of what this book offers, English food. There's little chance they'll be making plastic pork pies any time soon so armed with a bit of polymer clay you can finally make all meat and potatoes your dolls can eat, not to mention produce, and some of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen. I was about to get rid of my polymer clay until this book came in. Even if you have some of the Japanese or Chinese dollhouse books you'll still need this to round out your menus.

Angie Scarr gives very clear and detailed instructions how to make the food items in this book. From breads to cheese, meats to vegetables, it's all concisely described. Ms. Scarr gives a chart detailing the polymer clay colors needed to make all the items in this book, including how much of each color, by ratio. I am an experienced miniaturist of many years, and I checked this book out at the public library first to see if I wanted to get it. I thought it was fantastic, so I bought it from Amazon. These foods are largely universal although the Englishness of a couple of them is interesting, like the pork pie. I appreciated the instructions on how to do polymer clay seafood (where else can you find directions on how to make a fish skeleton with a fishhead attached??), and I also liked the instructions on how to make mini dishware to go with the foods.

This is a great book for the miniaturist. I'm not a true miniaturist. I just dabble. But I like this book because there are beautiful illustrations and wonderful tips and tricks. This book introduced me to Angie Scarr. She is wonderful with polymer clay and making it come to life. Get this book even if you already know all about making food and market stalls. It's great.

I'm really glad I got this book. I'm an absolute beginner, just got an electric guitar and I wanted something that would be fun to get me started. I'm not a kid but I don't think that matters for this book. The book is thin and there isn't a lot of crucial information in it, for example, no open chords. But somehow it's been incredibly useful to me for my first couple of weeks. On one of the first pages they give you a simple method for tuning your guitar and show you how to hold a pick. No music theory or anything like that. Then the rest of the book has some simple exercises that teach you how to play a few simple notes rhythmically. It goes over very simple power chords next and some really easy riffs. Even though I've graduated to a book with more content, I still use this book every day. It takes me about 10 minutes now to do all of the exercises as a warm up. I also think the songbook that is part of this series is a ton of fun!Get this book if you want your fingers to get used to touching your guitar competently before seeking out lessons. This is the basic stuff that you can teach yourself with the help of this book.

This book will give a young kid just enough to be able to get a sound or two out of an electric guitar. It's just enough to keep them from getting discouraged. That first year is where they either stick with it or sell their axe in a yard sale. With the materials in here, it is far easier for them to keep moving ahead.

Forty pages? Technically, yes, honestly? Several cheap photos of the guitarist ala 1970 Cheetos commercial fill out the pages. Not helpful photos of left and right hand positions, just silly shots. The few photos that are intended to illustrate are not clear. For example the before and after of how to hold a pick is ridiculous. A before shot? Really? The actual shot that would be useful has the camera in the wrong position.There is no music instruction here.No songs.Only power chords, which are not even technically chords.What the kid is supposed to come away with is vague.Give some rhythms, some chord changes, some actual chords, if not actual songs. Save your money. What is of use here in forty pages is covered in a page or three in many other texts. Don't be seduced by the cover. This book is not rock and roll.

i have been playing guitar for over 30 years and have started to teach my daughters, ages 7 and 8, how to play. this book is very simply and clearly written, the best intro book i've seen. adults would enjoy this as much as kids, especially if you have zero experience with the guitar. get this book first, and after you're finished consider moving on to another slightly more complicated beginner book such as "kids guitar course book 1" or similar.

Purchased for a 10 yr old boy - Id say a high beginner level. Its good!

I expected more from this, but I didn't really read much into it. I got it for my nephew for Christmas. When it arrived, I looked through it and found it was over-simplified and very short.

John Dibbs is unquestionably the world's premier aerial photographer, having flown over 1,100 aerial sorties, and flying in 125 different types. The Hurricane stands out as a real essential fighter. Courtesy of its sturdiness, availability in great numbers, reliability and versatility, the Hawker’s product succeeded in countering the Axis strength in the critical phase at the beginning of WW II.At a superficial glance it seemed similar to the Spitfire but “under the skin” the “Hurri” was a really different animal, with traditional design and construction compared to the very advanced “Spit”.Albeit this aspect could limit performance and development potential, in many theatres of operation it was an advantage: for example during the Battle of Britain the “Hurri” saved the British Isles from Nazi dominance due to a winning combination made by high combat readiness, straightforward development and quick production, three factors that did not belong to the rather immature Spitfire Mk I beleagueredin that period by many issues on armament and an appalling low production rate.This wonderful book, the perfect companion to the similar Spitfire title published by Osprey last year, is a real celebration of this astounding workhorse and constitutes a combination of excellence between the really astounding John Dibbs shots and the authoritative and interesting by Tony Holmes and Gordon Riley.Mr. Dibbs images are so effective that the reader can almost hear the powerful rumble of the Merlin and as in the previous Spitfire volume every single example of these perfectly restored Hurricanes tells a different story, from the clashes in the British skies to the hard fighting for Malta and Finland.The “Hurricane glory” final gallery is a feast for the enthusiast and closes in the best way a “must to have” book.
