Review

Troy is in ruins, but the gods are not done playing games with men and women.~~~The last in Greenwood’s Delphic Women series (Cassandra, 2013, etc.) again presents exciting, cleverly detailed ancient stories from a feminist viewpoint that seems just as likely to be accurate as the versions that came before. (Kirkus)The middle book of Greenwood’s Delphic Women trilogy (originally published 1995–97) is the last to appear in the U.S. It is also the strongest, a sort of revisionist look at the aftermath of the fall of Troy. King Agamemnon returns, heroic, to Mycenae, only to fall victim to the murderous plot of his queen, Clytemnestra. Electra, the royal couple’s daughter, is swept out of the city by Cassandra, the Trojan slave (and the focus of an earlier book in this series), hoping to get her safely to Delphi. Ancient Greek mythology is usually told from the point of view of the male characters, but Greenwood’s three-book series focuses on the female players. This allows her to examine previously underexplored characters, motivations, and events. Known for the strong female protagonists, Phryne Fisher and Corinna Chapman, in her two mystery series, Greenwood does an excellent job here of giving the ancient Greek story a modern flavor, using lean, unadorned prose and dialogue to make it seem as though the story could be taking place today. (Booklist)Greenwood fans will welcome her thoughtful second reinterpretation of a well-known Greek myth (after Medea). Among Greenwood’s other talents, she displays a gift for writing songs of the period. (starred review) (Publishers Weekly)Regarding Medea: "This is a book I didn't want to end. I dreamed about the characters for days afterward." (Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselli)

I will read anything Kerry Greenwood writes, no matter how different the books, from Phryne Fisher to Corinna Chapman to this Delphic Women trilogy. Her books are masterpieces: perfectly written, delicately nuanced, deeply engrossing. I love the fact that she can trip me up with words I've never encountered and delight me with phrases so perfectly honed that they give fresh meaning to old ideas. This book was no exception. It is a can't-put-it-down read.

Wonderful retelling of Greek mythology. Brings the period to life. Excellent, enjoyed every syllable. Greenwood is a wonderful writer, enjoyed this series tremendously.

ELECTRA is the final book in Kerry Greenwood’s Delphic Women trilogy and her retelling of the myth surrounding the victors and survivors of the Trojan War focusing on Electra, Orestes, Cassandra and Odysseus.ELECTRA introduces Electra and Orestes while continuing Cassandra’s story as well as Odysseus’ in abbreviated form.Cassandra doesn’t bear Agamemnon’s twins nor is she killed by Clytemnestra in Ms. Greenwood’s rendition. Chryse Diomenes and Eumides, who crossed paths, parted and were reunited via their love for the cursed Trojan princess, rescue her at the crucial moment. The trio escapes the palace and Mycenae with Electra and Orestes in tow. For a bit Cassandra and Electra’s stories intertwine. Their journey together highlights the differences between them, their cultures, and the way women were viewed and treated by the Aechaens and Trojans.Chapters begin with the gods discussing their mortal pawns or Odysseus. Events are then told by Cassandra and Electra giving us their contrasting viewpoints. Electra isn’t particularly likeable during her journey with the trio. Once the travelers encounter Pylades, cousin of Electra and Orestes, they part ways but are reunited later.Bit by bit Electra and Orestes past is revealed giving them a compelling reason, other than revenge, for seeking the death of their mother, Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus.Cassandra, Chryse, and Eumides’ continued journeying after reaching Delphi is due to their efforts to find acceptance a place they can call home. While most of the gods are once again portrayed as meddling and petty Artemis is especially impressive in her overall demeanor and defense of Orestes. As Ms. Greenwood retells MEDEA, CASSANDRA, and ELECTRA from the women’s POV, I can’t consider her versions tragedies. That being said I consider Electra to be the most tragic of the three women. Ms. Greenwood’s imaginings and “what ifs” regarding these three remarkable heroines is certainly thought provoking, entertaining and worth considering, especially in regards to Medea. If you like mythology, Greek tragedies, and don’t mind a bit of artistic license, The Delphic Women trilogy is definitely worth your time.Reviewed by IvyD for Manic Readers

Electra is the third book in the Delphic Women series by Australian author, Kerry Greenwood. Electra’s father, Agamemnon of the House of Atreus, has been victorious in Troy, and is about to return to Mycenae with a Trojan slave concubine, Cassandra, when she becomes aware of the plot by her mother, Clytemnestra and her mother’s lover, Aegithus, to murder Agamemnon. Despite her privileged and secluded life, she assists Diomenes, an Asclepid healer, and Eumides, a Trojan sailor to enter the quarters to rescue Cassandra.Having seen Agamemnon slain, Electra must flee, and takes her ten-year-old brother, Orestes with her. She is invited to accompany the trio to Delphi. Meanwhile, Odysseus is still at sea, unable to return to his wife and child in Ithica while Poseidon’s wrath remains. And the Gods argue over the fate of the House of Atreus.Greenwood tells the story in four narrative strands: Cassandra, Electra and Odysseus each relate events from their perspective, and the deliberations of the Gods are reported from time to time. Greenwood’s extensive research is apparent on every page, but her writing style and attention to detail ensures that what could dry and boring is made absorbing and easy to assimilate.By infusing the characters with personality and emotion, strengths and weaknesses, and giving them everyday conversation, Greenwood takes Classic Greek mythology and makes it palatable. While this is the final book of a trilogy, it can be read as a stand-alone. An interesting read.

ElectraKerry GreenwoodPoisoned Pen, Dec 3 2013, $24.95ISBN 9781464202131The long war is finally over with the destruction of Troy although the surviving losers secretly begin construction of a new city. Many like Hector paid the price with their lives; others like Cassandra the seer have become prisoners; and some like weary Odysseus are unable to go home to Ithaca as puppets manipulated by the Gods venture on another quest. To the victors go the glory thinks elated King of Men Agamemnon as he sails home to Mycenae. However, his years away has led to his wife Queen Clytemnestra seeking comfort with Aegisthus, nephew child murdering Atreus, and not wanting her liege back in her life to take away her power accrued in his absence. One of their daughters Electra sees how much her mother prefers her father go back to war. When Clytemnestra kills Agamemnon, Electra expected the spousal murder and vows to avenge her sire's death; though has an even more powerful reason to assassinate her mother the Queen. The final Delphic Women Greek mythology (see Cassandra and Medea) is a superb retelling of Electra that brings freshness by the title character having a viable second motive to commit royal murder and a fascinating where are the winners and losers now that the fighting ended. Readers will appreciate this strong rendition (and trilogy) as Kerry Greenwood provides a fabulous mythos.Harriet Klausner

Review

"The universe of Sapkowski's The Witcher is one of the most detailed and best-explored in modern fantasy, offering endless opportunities for fresh ideas ... Complex character relationships enrich this already complex world; this is the sort of series fantasy fans will cherish."―B&N on Tower of Swallows"One of the best and most interesting fantasy series I've ever read. Though it functions well as adventure fiction, it has added depth and value as satire and commentary on fantasy literature ... Sapkowski is a genuine stylist."―Nerds of a Feather on Baptism of Fire"Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodgepodge of fantasy, intellectual discourse, and dry humor. Recommended."―Time on Blood of Elves"Like Mieville and Gaiman, [Sapkowski] takes the old and makes it new ... fresh take on genre fantasy."―Foundation on The Last Wish"A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. This stand-alone novel has a fair bit of positive elements to combat the negatives. Jumping back into the world of The Witcher is always a pleasure. The world is rich with environments and characters that allows full immersion for the reader. Geralt is back at the forefront of focus with more character development. Considering this is a 'prequel' to the saga proper, it's good to see this enhance Geralt's presence in the full story. The novel itself does take a bit of time to pick up but comes into its pace. It reads like an extended short story. This is not a detriment. It is simply an observation based on the two collections of short stories available. The intrigue is thick, the action is present (not overbearing), the characters are interesting, and the combination of all works well. One of the main issues with this stand-alone is that it is a prequel. We know there is more to come. Any peril that befalls Geralt, while very interesting, becomes moot considering the saga proper has not even yet begun. The reader, unless this is the first book they read, will know that Geralt will be okay. This should be one thing that every reader should just accept before going into the read. This may make the read dull for some readers who cannot accept this, but others will have no issue.Overall, the novel is a fine addition to the full story. The people, events, and environment make the read well worth the effort. There is some fanfare for the long-time fans as some characters come back for brief periods to add to what the reader should already know. For new readers, they get a chance to acquaint themswlves with how the world of The Witcher works. It's not an essential read, but it is an excellent read.

I enjoyed this book a great deal.It occurs time-wise after the Witcher meets Yennefer, but before the events in the Circi stories.Without giving too much way (spoilers below), this book feels closer to the original Polish versions of the stories than previous English versions. The stories have an "adult" feel to them and are less "politically correct." The characters and their stories feel more natural and less focused and filtered through a current political filter. In the first town that Gerault comes to, he almost passes out in room inhabited by extreme farting, loud mouthed women guards. Some bathroom humor ensues, and eventually there is a scuffle with the amazons. There are at least two love interests in the book (not including remembrances of Yennefer). We get to explore a bit more of the world, which is fun, and the Witcher and his dwarven companion give us a bit more philosophy in a good natured, enjoyable way.We also find out a good bit about the mages and where some of the terrors in the countryside *actually* come from. All in all, a good book for a mature reader.** Spoilers Follow **The Witcher has his swords stolen, and then he is framed by the mages and physically exploited by a female mage (he doesn't seem to mind much).Dandelion actually has a pivotal role in this book and saves Gerault's bacon on several occasions. The story takes us from some simple monster hunting to the Witcher's framing to some shady criminals to some even shadier mages who need the Witcher to "eliminate" one of their own gone rogue. The Witcher barely escapes with his life after learning that *gasp* most of the creatures that he has been fighting over the years were actually *created* by the mages guild. (Actually that *was* a shocker for this reader.)After a couple of additional complications, including the introduction of a fox-woman, child stealing, shapeshifter, Gerault is reunited with his swords. It is a fun romp, and I enjoyed the snarky banter and anti-hero aspects of the Witcher even more in this book than previous ones.My take is that this collection is closer to the mother tongue than the previous versions and thus has a better, more natural flow to it. I've mentioned it a couple of times because it becomes obvious as you read the stories.**PC warning** One caveat, if you are easily offended, or you have very specific views about who is *allowed* to be portrayed as a villain then you might not like this book. **PC warning off**

It was ok. Brought some characters we had only heard of prior to this book in, but I do wish Andrzej Sapkowski would write in a more linear fashion. Sometimes it can get tough to keep up back and forth past, present, future. This is the past compared to the last book, with the epilogue being in the future beyond the last book.

It is like one of the stories from the first book "the last wish", just longer. I really like it because the monsters and characters you get to know about are interesting. After "blood of elves" the main story gets too political and is less about the world/monsters/creatures/ and their lore and more about Ciri/Politics/Battles. It is really nice to go back to monsters and adventures with geralt, really nice story about the witcher's proffession.I recommend it for any "the witcher" fan.

I will take any opportunity to jump back into the world of the Witcher. Read all the books, played all the games, and I have some cool Witcher collectables. As much as it pains me to say it, this is the weakest Witcher book I have read. Jumps around a lot, the story is weak, and it feels very rushed. It is worth the read if you are a diehard fan who has read and done everything else Witcher themed. I worry that this book might discourage new Witcher fans from reading the wonderful Witcher Saga.

Season of Storms is essentially a stand-alone work, though you might find it less interesting if you haven't read the other books in the Witcher series (The Last Witch through The Lady of the Lake). To me, Season of Storms was a bit of a let-down. It didn't enrich my appreciation for the series, nor did it give me a significantly deeper understanding of Sapkowski's main characters. We're offered a few interesting glimpses of Dandelion--specifically his less-than-flattering opinion of Geralt--but I wish there were more moments like that. That said, Season of Storms is just as well-written and engaging as the rest of the series, so if you've read the first seven novels and find yourself hankering for more, this should prove satisfying.

This book is brilliant I am a new dog owner and got my mini dachshund puppy last month. This book was an invaluable resource in helping me to prepare for my puppies homecoming and everything I need to get for the first few months. There is also a section about bringing home rescue dachshunds. I continue to use this as my puppy grows older there are really good sections on socialization and training. I recommend to new dachshund owners in particular as there as so many breed specifics I was not aware of.

Having had one beautiful dachshund I decided to read this book when I finally got my second. My first had passed on through causes I could not have prevented and, in an attack of anxiety, I finally gave into the thought that I might not know it all after all. This book is fun to read and an absolute God-send! Not only did it help me understand what happened to my beautiful girl-dog who passed away, but thanks to it, my new puppy slept through the night, trots along side me on his lead, comes when I call (mostly), knows his name, and is settling into life in our home and my daily routine. I know when to worry and when not to. When to say something and when to respond with cool, silent distain.READ THIS BOOK! You'll enjoy it and you and your precious furry short-legged someone with both be able to relax and enjoy your time together right from the start.

I was young when I had ANY dog and we aregoing to get our first dachshund this week. This book gave great insight on dachshunds and I feel prepared and ready to have one! Dachshunds are a special breed with their own personality and I'm ready to test my patience but most of all I am ready to have loyal little friend

Everything Dachshund covers all the basics which I like, because it becomes a good reference for new dachshund owners and reinforces the history and do's and don'ts for those of us who have lived along side dachshunds for a long time. I like the breakdown she has on how to teach basic obedience, having separate sections for leash training, sit, stay, etc. Dachshunds have a personality that is all their own and I think the author does well to explain how this will impact the style of training these lovable dogs need. It's a rather bold title, and while I don't believe it's the "Complete Guide", it is a great addition to my library of dachshund books.

This is a great book! It is the most comprehensive Dachshund book I've read. I've read it cover to cover and have referred back to it several times while training my new miniature dachshund puppy. It covers everything from selecting the right puppy/dog to showing your dog. It is filled with great housebreaking training tips, solutions to everyday problems, first aid tips, and even how to handle a hard to train dog. It is a fantastic source of information for any dog owner, but especially the dachshund owner.

This book covers every possible aspect of owing a doxy. It spells out everything that can go wrong so that people will not buy the dog and then months later give it to the pound. The first chapter describes the lifetime cost, $20,000, and the several hours per day of your time that is required to keep poochie healthy and happy. It then goes into great detail on finding the proper breeder. Then taking the dog home and holding hands with it hours per day until it is happy in your house.Socializing the dog with all sorts of people and other pets.Preventing bad behavior.Traveling. And on and on.

After switching dog breeds I needed a good book for dachshunds. I got the dog and then the book so 1/2 of the book became useless to me as it described in detail where to look for one and if the breed would be a good match for you. The other half was very repetitive and I might as well have gone to a library for 20 minutes and flip thru the book there.

This is an easy to follow and most helpful book for living with and caring for,and easily training a puppy dashund. I highly recommend it to any one who loves dashund's but have no idea how to make certain they become wonderful, loving house pets. Maru

Round Buildings, Square Buildings, and Buildings that Wiggle Like a Fish (A Borzoi Book), by Philip M. Isaacson

From Publishers Weekly

Clear, stunning photographs combine with a sincere, well-meaning text to lead readers on a tour of places that seem close to the author's heart, if not his sensibilities. Included are the wonders of Alhambra, the Taj Mahal and the Parthenon, and such unlikely but apt entries as New England shelters. In the chapters on doorways, ceilings, structure, etc., simple concepts and more complicated ones sit side by side and require some explanation. For example, to say that one building has more dignity than others without offering firm background on the criteria for judging architectural "dignity" renders the comparison meaningless. So is the statement that "Order and loveliness at York (Minster) have equal voices," since few readers will understand "voice" in this context. And the sentence structure can be confusing; the "This is" that begins many statements sets readers adrift for a few words until the picture is directly referred to. When the text works, the images are exceptional: Trinity Church next to the John Hancock tower in Boston "slumbers on like an old monk gathered up in his robes." Because of such references, and despite its flaws, the volume is certain to impress readers, and open their eyes to the architectural wealth around them each day. Ages 10-up. From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7 This obtuse collection of photographs takes readers on a tour of major and minor buildings around the world. In the accompanying text Isaacson discusses the elements that give a building its character and attempts to explain how the harmony of these elements makes a structure beautiful. Unfortunately, the organization of the book is so fragmented, jumping from place to place, backwards and forwards through time, that the result is more a travelogue than a survey of architectural styles. After looking at the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon, and Chartres, Isaacson examines building materials, windows, doors, roofs, and ornamentation. Some points are belabored, while others are not clearly defined, and the ``gee-whiz'' tone quickly becomes annoying. The 93 color photographs are mostly of high quality, and each is numbered for reference within the text. Because each building generally is allotted only one photograph, even when a different element is being discussed, readers are frequently required to turn back to a previous picture. An appended list of the photographs purports to offer additional information about the buildings and structures discussed but, for the most part, simply repeats information previously given. The lack of a bibliography, a glossary, and an index limits the book's usefulness. Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

So incredibly hooked!!! I can't believe the journey Robin and her friends have gone through! It's so hard not to give spoilers on this one. It was so incredibly intense and gripping. I wish this series never had to end. I'll definitely be reading it again!!! Every single thing Bella Forrest writes turns to complete gold!!! I don't know how she does it!

So usually like in the gender series I was getting bored could skip chapters and not have missed anything. This series has not done that to me. I actually read every word and it’s not repetitive I formation like some of her other books. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. On to the book itselfOMG my mind has been blown to bits robin finds out who her birth parents are knows where hope is finds her mom finally bangs Jace like finally..... goes on some freaking insane missions and does not get killed woo I want this girls luck. Bella has a lot of loose ends to tie up next book so hopefully it will take more than 4 hours to read. Rooting for the jace robin hope trio family to be brought together and the government overhauled with many people fired and their children taken away.Real life: if this was legit happening in the USA I know my child would have been taken away but I would hope to think I don’t take it lying down. Bella’s books make you think. Where does she come up with these story lines for her books they are insaneBella if you read this know your awesome and don’t stop writing.

Every book I read from Bella Forrest is a jaw dropping, emotional rollercoaster, and heart pounding ride every page. The adventure of Robin and her friends is crazy and I will be dreading the time till I get to see what's next.

Why the government so evil, torturing the poor peopleAnd taking their babies away from them.I'm heart broken that Kory is dead. And I hope there is survivors in edgebrook.

I’m hooked on the characters and how the series will end. I just want them to get their kids back. Some parts were too detailed and drawn out before getting back to the characters and mission.

I have loved every book in this series. Can’t wait for Book 6 to see how it all turns out. What happens to Robin & Jace? How does Henry fare? Will they have an impact on CRAS?

Good read. Twists and turns in Bella's usual fashion and ease. How I wish they could get #6 off as quickly as I read. I "tore" right through the book!

I have read all in this series so far. It’s a quick read and a page turned. Can’t wait for the next in this series to arrive

Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Best Play Award“Vivid and uplifting… pure poetry… remarkable!”—Time “A symphonic composition with a rich lode of humanity running through it.”—Los Angeles Times“His language is golden: rich in humor and poetry and redolent of a colorful vernacular.”—Wall Street Journal   “Has an unassailable authenticity… a lot of life and a lot of humor… By the end, a small world has been utterly transformed.”—Variety   “These characters are fully imagined—they live… reeling out stories about their past, their angers, their dreams.”—Washington Post   “Wilson’s most adventurous and honest attempt to reveal the intimate nature of history… glorious storytelling… touching and often funny… a penetrating revelation of a world hidden from view.”—Frank Rich, The New York Times

_Two Trains Running_ is the August Wilson "Century Series" play depicting the African-American experience in the 1960s. In a 1969 Pittsburgh diner, 6 men and a woman share vignettes about their lives and the "American Dream." Memphis, the owner of the diner, is about to have the city seize the restaurant under "immenent domain." Sterling, (who will play a significant role in Radio Golf) has just been released from prison and is enamored with the Black Power movement. West, the community's mortitian and Wolf, a number runner, are the wealthiest men in the Hill District. As these characters relate their lives, Wilson shows how the American Dream has been promised, and for so many, been denied.Memphis is frustrated and angry: he was run off his farm in Mississippi (with an allusion to The Piano Lesson (The August Wilson Century Cycle)), and now faces being run off of his business in Pittsburgh. Hambone, a homless (and possibly mentally ill) customer has similarly been cheated. Reflecting on the American Dream, Halloway says, "People kill me talking about (African-Americans) is lazy. (African-Americans) is the most hardworking people in the world. Worked three hundered years for free. And didn't take no lunch hour. Now all of a sudden (African-Americans) is lazy. Don't know how to work. All of a sudden when they got to pay (African-Americans), ain't no work for him to do."Wilson, however, asks us to consider whether the "American Dream" is merely about making money - both Wolf and West have made their money by exploiting and taking advantage of others, seeking to pull themselves up at the expense of their community. Sterling pays a visit to Mama Esther at 1839 Wylie (an allusion to Gem of the Ocean, where Mama Esther will "make you right") and is indeed made right, forgoing money in favor of love. This is reiterated by Holloway who tells the audience, "That's all you got. You got love and you got death. Death will find you ... it's up to you to find love. That's where most people fall down at. Death got room for everybody. Love pick and choose. ... most people won't admit that. ... Love got a price to it. Everybody don't want to pay. They put it on credit. Time it come due they got it on credit somewhere else."I was profoundly moved by _Two Trains Running_ - a reference to the fact that in life, there are always choices, always two trains running in different directions. Wilson, as with his other plays, poses profound questions about who we are as a nation, about the African-American experience, and that experience in the broader context of being an American. Here, however, he asks us to reconsider what choices we've made and what our values as individuals are. As if his other work hadn't already made him an American classic, _Two Trains Running_ certainly would. As with his other work, if you have an opportunity to see it performed, do not miss it.

August Wilson proved that genius is never complicated, always simple and clear, and hugely enjoyable. His characters are always alive and their speech poetic. The ending could not be better. He was a poet writing plays. I loved the man. What a shame he did not love to write more! Great loss!

I like the flow of the characters and the storyline.

I was going to Ashland to see this play and wanted to read it first. It's not my "cup of tea". The after-play discussion was fabulous at decoding the nuances of this play.

This is a well-written drama. I love Wilson's effortless use of colorful colloquial ebonics.

I really liked it.

I have read 3 of his plays and I'm excited about his works.

Great play; may have opportunity to direct next year.
