Jack and Annie sat on their front porch. They were waiting for their mom to take them to baseball practice. Tap, tap, tap.Raindrops spattered on the porch steps. A strong breeze shook the tree leaves.“Uh-oh,” said Annie. “Do you think a storm is coming?”“I can’t tell,” said Jack, looking up at the clouds. “Sorry, kids,” their mom  called from  inside.“Coach Dave just emailed—no practice today.”“Darn,” said Jack.“That’s okay,” said Annie. “Now we can go to the woods.”“The woods?” said Jack. “Why?”“I woke up with a feeling,” Annie said in a hushed voice. “Something really important is going to happen today. I thought it was baseball practice, like maybe I’d hit a home run or something. But now . . .” She smiled at Jack.“Really? You think . . . ?” he said.“Yes! Hold on! I’ll get our stuff.” Annie hurried inside.A moment later, she returned with two small umbrellas and Jack’s backpack. She handed over the pack and one of the umbrellas. “Mom says as long as there’s no thunder and lightning, we can take a walk.”“Great,” said Jack. He pulled on his pack. “To the woods!”“To the tree house!” said Annie.Jack and Annie opened their umbrellas and headed out into the rain. They ran down the sidewalk, across the street, and into the misty Frog Creek woods. Raindrops fell softly as they hurried between the trees. The air smelled of wet leaves and damp earth. Finally, Jack and Annie came to the tallest oak in the woods. “Yay,” Jack whispered. Annie laughed. “Glad it rained today?” “Totally,” said Jack. He and Annie folded their umbrellas and climbed up the rope ladder. The magic tree house was dry and shadowy inside. A book was lying on the floor. A purple leather bookmark was sticking out from between the pages. Lying on top of the book was a necklace. It had a thin gold chain and a glass star. The star was no bigger than a penny. It gave off a soft yellow glow. “Wow, a little star!” said Annie, picking up the necklace. “I wonder what it’s for.” “Yeah, and where are we going?” asked Jack. He picked up the book. The cover showed a red, white, and blue flag with one big star. The title said:   A History of Texas: The Lone Star State   “Great. Back to Texas!” said Jack. “I love Texas,” said Annie. “Remember when we met Slim and saved Dusty’s colt?” “Yup,” Jack said in a low voice. Annie laughed. Jack was imitating their cowboy friend, Slim. Jack turned to the page with the purple bookmark. He and Annie looked at an old black-and-white photo of a city by the ocean.“Galveston, Texas,” read Annie. “I’ve heard of that city.” “Me too,” said Jack. “Did Morgan leave us a note?” “I don’t see one,” said Annie. “Is anything written on the back of the bookmark?” Jack turned the bookmark over. “Yes!” he said. Tiny writing was painted on the leather. He read aloud:   The place you must go On this late summer day Is an island in Texas Between Gulf and bay.   “We’re here to help!” Is what you must say. “Seek high ground now! Do not delay!”Jack looked up. “Why do people need help?” he asked. “And why should they seek high ground?” “Good questions,” said Annie. “Keep reading.” Jack  read the next part:   For those in the dark, Adrift and astray, A single bright star Can show them the way.   “So that must explain this,” said Annie. She held up the necklace with the star. “But it’s so small,” said Jack. “And it’s not really bright. How can it show the way to anything?” “Go on, read the last part,” said Annie. Jack read the last lines of the rhyme:   Learn from a hero Who is humble and brave,Who welcomes the hundreds Arriving on waves.   “What does that mean?” asked Jack.“I don’t know,” said Annie. “Let’s go to Texas and find out all the answers.” She hung the star necklace around her neck.“Wait—do we have our Pennsylvania book to help us get back home?” said Jack. They looked around the tree house.“There—” said Annie. She pointed to the Pennsylvania book, in a shadowy corner.“Okay, all set,” said Jack. He placed his finger on the picture of Galveston, Texas.“I wish we could go there!” he said. The wind started to blow. The tree house started to spin. It spun faster and faster. Then everything was still. Absolutely still.

Not just for kids.. I love reading the books to my 10 yr old!We started this series with my momma when my oldest (now 16) was 8. We continued with my youngest (now 10), and we love the books. While not thrilled they changed the order of the books, we still love the stories. Being from Texas, this one especially holds a place in my heart. It was historically accurate and also beautifully written. We read 2 chapters a night, and I was just as excited as the girls to hear what happened next!Trust me, these books have no age limit..

I liked the uplifting stories about that horrible time in Galveston. There were many real heroes.

My daughter is 8 and she loves Magic Treehouse books, she read this as soon as she got it

I use this in class like all the Magic Tree books. Good balance of fiction and non fiction reading that the students love.

My 7 year old daughter loves the Magic Treehouse books! Even I love reading them to her. Highly recommend this series!

Wonderful book for my grandkids to learn more about where they live - Galveston!

You, and everyone else should love this amazing book! It is one of the best!

Nice addition to the series

"You can't judge a book by it's cover." We have all heard that. When I saw CARROTS on the cover of a book for ketogenic dieting, I thought, well here we go again. Everybody knows that carrots have too much sugar. However, once you actually read the book (as well as looking at the delicious photos) you find a ketogenic diet gourmet gem. They rightly state in the "Foods to Enjoy" table on page 8 that carrots can be included but "only with moderation". The basic information regarding achieving a ketogenic lifestyle is brief, yet accurate. The whole book tells you how to have "Foods to Enjoy" on your ketogenic diet. The recipes chosen are diverse and simplified for our busy lives, yet delicious and adding that little bit of joy from a selection of self-prepared foods which taste real good. I enjoy the Blackberry-Chia Pudding (Frozen Blackberries from my backyard). So, with additional thought after writing this review, in this case we can judge a book by it's cover. Delicious to look at, Delicious to read, and by following the "made easy" recipes, Delicious to eat.I highly recommend this book for those who have been following a ketogenic lifestyle for a long time to learn some new recipes to spice up our life, and to make life a little easier. For those who are just in the contemplation stage, or who are ready to begin, this cookbook lives up to it's calling card in Chapter One: "Simple & Easy Ketogenic Cooking".For those who want more of the "science" behind the ketogenic diet, it will be a good companion to the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Phiney and Volek".Reading and "digesting" this cookbook is a good way to start off the New Year on a ketogenic diet. 5 stars in my opinion.

I bought this book because it had “5 ingredients” in the title.i thought it would be easy peasy for cooking during the hectic work week. The recipes are pretty easy but most required more than 5 ingredients which is irritating since the name is “Easy 5 ingredients...”

I Wanted to love this. The high net carb levels are ridiculously high for each portion (like 13 and 15!!) which completely defeats keto!! Beware!!!

The name of this book is misleading. Very few of the recipes contain five or less ingredients. The author also includes specialty ingredients such as “Perfect Keto Exogenous Ketone Powder in Peaches and Cream”. I was expecting ingredients that I could purchase at my local grocery store.

This book has it all! The recipes and ingredients are simple and accessible, and I actually want to eat just about everything in here. I’m following a strict Keto profile (20g of total carbs a day) and I can eat many of the recipes here; however there are a large handful that have too many carbs for me at this point. If you are doing net 20g or even moderate Keto just about everything should be right on track for you.

Apparently, I'm one of those metabolically resistant people that takes just a little bit longer to adjust to a ketogenic diet. I needed easy days when I was first starting and occasionally I still need them because I'm still adjusting to the diet. I've only been on it for about a month and I still have days where I feel incredibly tired and I'm still trying to get the hang of what my macros need to be for somebody with insulin resistance and high cortisol levels. This book can really help people who are just tired and don't really have the energy to meal prep using recipes that have 15 or 20 ingredients. A lot of the recipes are super easy and they're delicious. They are mostly all ingredients that you can find locally no matter where you live. Many are budget friendly. I also found the even if you don't follow the recipes exactly, this is more about giving you ideas for ways that you can pair foods together so you don't get bored while still keeping it easy. You can get some ideas on what flavors would work together so that you don't give up from boredom of just eating eggs and avocado everyday. I also like that the author often includes the brand names of certain key ingredients that she uses and that takes some of the stress out of grocery shopping. For instance, I don't want to be standing in the grocery store and reviewing the nutrition facts on every pizza sauce in the store to try to find the lowest carb one. She tells you which brand she uses and if your local grocers don't have it, you can always look to see if Amazon has it. You don't have to waste your time hunting around for one that tastes good and has the right carb counts. Not all of us live close to stores that carry endless options for low carb living so I like the simple ingredient lists and I like that she lists the name brands so that if you can't find them, you at least know what to order.

If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. Jen somehow made my transition to Keto the easiest, and BEST thing I’ve ever done for myself. My family gobbles up her meals with no leftovers to spare! Don’t waste a second trying to decide. BUY. THIS. BOOK.

I was expecting very simple, enjoyable recipes and ended up with expensive and time consuming ones. I’m a little disappointed in this book as I heard it has such great reviews. Not to mention most are more than 5 imgredients.

I got into My Hero Academia after seeing a short clip on Funimation's Facebook page. I became hooked on the anime and season 2 ended I just had to get into reading the manga (especially after a couple of YouTube reviews if the anime and manga). The illustration is amazing and the storytelling is awesome. I like the use of bird's eye view to further help with understanding what is going on as well notes on characters. (There are a lot of characters nd their quirks to remember.) The only other manga I've read was Attack on Titans.

As a HUGE fan of the franchise, several moments stand out to me, in both the manga and anime. One of them is the fight in this volume against Muscular, a fight where Deku must put it all on the line to save a life, even if it is the life of someone who hates him.As this volume begins, the training camp from hell that resembles more a special ops training camp than anything else is in full swing. The would-be heroes are training their powers for everything they are worth, with the hope of becomes full-time heroes that battle evil. Eventually, after much sweat, agony, and so forth, the students are rewarded with some free time to have an organized game, and then the villains attack. But this time, the stakes are far, far higher. For this is not the collection of random street thugs just collected and thrown at the heroes. This is a small group of highly, and frighteningly, skilled baddies. And they are out to murder and maim as many members of Classes A and B as they can, among other objectives. So now the students are in for an enormously hard fight, one where any minor mistake could mean death. Into this comes Izuku, who is determined to save the boy Kota, despite the boy's bad treatment as he feels for the kid and, hey, this is Deku we are talking about. *Of course* he'll try to save anyone he can. But this time, he meets the villain Muscular, who is the toughest challenge a still learning Izuku has faced...I really liked the art here. I know that is stated often in reviews by folks, myself included, but I did. It was both very good, and showed the action well. Some series show action well, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out the heck is going on. Not so here. Here the action is detailed and all the better and clearer for it.The characterization was good, as it showed us both the heroism of the good guys, and the sheer evil and/or insanity of the bad guys. This adds to the stakes, as we know that, for the first time, someone could really, truly die. Special mention goes to, among the good guy characters, the aforementioned Deku, but also Ochaco, Tsuyu, Todoroki, and Shoji. Of course, both among the pro-heroes, both Aizawa-sensei and Mandalay were cool. This was the darkest volume of the series so far, bar none, though I know from spoilers that it isn't the darkest period. But always, always, the light - via light-hearted moments, comedy, good prevailing over evil, so on - shines. In the case of this volume, there is a huge cliff-hanger that is going to be resolved in future ones. This is one heck of a ride and one that is only getting better.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

Probably one of the best fights so far, can't recommend this volume enough.

They Look great and came in good condition! Plus Ultra!

One of the best current manga/anime series out today.Only complaints time till digital release is slow and no ability to save particular panels for print, though I understand why that is.

Awesome volume manga. I do recommend it. 😁

I got so excited I purposely tripped on all the boxes in my house

A great addition to the series. It's nice to see all the soon to be heroes starting to come into their own.

I have read many books on chakras. Some have been informative but dry, others have been more fluff than info. Dr. Perrakis combines both spiritual and historical information. Seeped deep with information, the book is reader friendly without losing even the most educated reader's interest. Beautifully written and illustrated, this book is a must have for all those who would like to have more balance in their lives. Each chakra is exquisitely explained and information on which crystals, oils, planets, runes, tarot & even recipes correspond with each chakra. A perfect gift for all who wish to know more or who are already working on aligning their chakras. I look forward to reading more books by Dr. Perrakis.

Full Disclosure: I have been a member of Dr. Perrakis' metaphysical classes for almost two years. Absolutely worth every minute and every penny!Dr. Perrakis has poured a wealth of knowledge and research into this guide. The guide is for perfect for EVERYONE, from the beginner to the seasoned practitioner of energy work. The guide is easy to navigate, chocked full of correspondences, recipes, and history. At this time in our human history, love, peace, and healing are greatly needed. As is often said, a Healer cannot heal others until they themselves are healed. Here is your starting place!

This would be a great book to anyone brand new to the idea or concept of chakras. If you participate in any of the group followings you'll find it is just regurgitated information. If you already work with the chakras it is likely you won't find anything new here. Some of the sanskrit translations are off as well as the mantras, but the illustrations are beautiful and the book is beautifully written.

I pre-ordered this book and was so excited to receive it. I could not believe that the font on the main text was so small! No way even with glasses could I read it. I have a multitude of books that I read with no problem. I was bummed.

Just got it yesterday...pre-ordered it as soon as it was available. I'm still reading it and will be for a long time. There is an amazing amount of info in there all laid out in a simple, sensible manner. Whether ur a beginner or experienced working with chakras, this is a complete guide. Each chakra has its own meditation, gemstones, rituals, even runes! You don't need to cross-reference other books or search for info, everything is laid out plainly and in easy to understand ways. It's like an encyclopedia and a how-to all in one. The artwork is exceptional. The art and colors of each section correspond with that particular chakra. Besides the chakra work, there's so much more...working with deities, offerings, rituals...it's amazing the amount of knowledge Athena was able to condense into one book, without losing any of the history. I feel like it gives the reader a very strong knowledge of chakra work but in a concise yet all-inclusive way. It's a brilliant piece of writing with amazing art. I def recommend this book to anyone looking to learn about chakra work or the fundamentals of metaphysics and energy.

Dr. Perrakis has included more information on chakras in one book than any other I have read. By bringing historical and relevent information together in one book it us an must read! Chakras, herbs, oils, meditation... Well written without being stuffy or boring! I look forward to reading all future books by Dr. Perrakis!

First i want to say... this book is filled with information. Not only does it have information on chakras and what exactly that is but tells you how to balance, activate energy flow and more. It tells you what correspondences for each chakra... gemstones, oils, herbs etc. and yes it is the ultimate guide! There are also some great recipes in it. I highly recommend this book!!

Dr. Athena Perrakis gives detailed information she practices in her daily life. Many of us are looking to begin change within ourselves to encorporate light into the world. If this resonates with you, then this book is for you! It's very effective if you just trust in yourself and in the process. As a beginner to Chakras and the metaphysical and quantum mechanics world, I have experienced great growth in just reading and implementing the first Embodiment Exercise Of Sensing Ancestral Imprints. Each chapter in the book is an exercise in daily life. In my opinion, in order for you to get the best results of the book, it is best read and understood slow and methodically. Have an open mind and an open heart. Thank you, Dr. Athena Perrakis for being an amazing mentor and thank you for this offering of great wisdom from your Heart, Soul and Spirit. PK

I'm neither a civil engineer nor a construction man, but I've always liked the looks and durability of concrete items. This book is simply wonderful. The author does an excellent job of describing technical aspects of concrete's manufacture and use for the non-technician and reveals some absorbing facts. By and large this is a history of mankind's use of concrete and cement illustrated with mini-biographies of the major players ranging from hypothetical neolithic shamans through Herod, Frank Lloyd Wright, and LeCorbusier. Along the way are stories of a number of fascinating characters you have probably never heard of. It is also a summary of the technical changes in concrete over that time. Also, there are surprises. The author makes a good case that concrete is less fireproof, earthquake resistant, and long-lasting than we might imagine. Although such Roman constructions as the Pantheon have lasted without much repair for almost two millenia, most of the modern reinforced concrete constructions will be lucky to last a hundred years. The author gives a very persuasive explanation for this state of affairs. If I have any criticisms at all, they are two-fold. First, the amount of space devoted to certain personalities does not seem that correlated to their importance. As mentioned by another reviewer, the Frank Lloyd Wright section is pretty long. Second, while the author disclaims any technical expertise, he is downright polemic regarding the ways in which the concrete industry has gone wrong, and sometimes right. I think the jury is still out on some of these issues, and there are reasonable disagreements among the experts.Nevertheless, if you have any interest in concrete as a material for anything from birdbaths to skyscrapers, you should find this book a smooth and fascinating read.

Concrete Planet (2011) by Robert Courland is a decent effort at a book that looks at the history of concrete. This is clearly going to be a heavy, non-abstract book. The lessons of the book will also be reinforced. At some stage toward the end cracks may also appear. The books chapters on the discovery of concrete and it's use and development as far as the middle of C18 are really good. The way that concrete is likely to have been discovered and then was used in Ancient Rome is fascinating. The chapter on the development of Portland cement is also highly entertaining. The book's quality drops when it reaches the 20th Century. Far too much time is spent looking at Frank Lloyd Wright and not nearly enough at what concrete was being used for in the 20th century. The weird study of the construction of the Sydney Harbour Opera House is silly too. Reinforced concrete's role in the construction of skyscrapers, highways, dams, bridges and other C20 icons is really important. Falling Water isn't nearly as worthy of mention. The book finally looks at how modern reinforced concrete structures have a fairly short lifespan of about 50 years. This is worth thinking about and the book covers this well.Materials are a really neglected part of technology at least in general non-fiction. This is a worthy but flawed book that looks at a really important transforming technology. It's worth reading if you're into these things and much of the book is excellent. It's a pity the whole book doesn't attain the same standard.

The history of concrete? I know, the subject sounds about as exciting as reading an old telephone book. However there are some amazing stories within this book. For one, I did not know Thomas Edison, the electrical inventor, had anything to do with improving cement. Nor did I know that one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most beautiful houses was designed and drafted within a day. Also if you have ever been to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and wondered about the story behind that unusual structure, that story is in this book as well. A great book. Well worth the time to read.

We are "surrounded" by Concrete, yet I knew nothing about its history. I live in North Eastern Ohio and often hike on the Ohio & Erie Canal towpath trails. I always assumed that the surviving ruins of locks and spillways built here in the 1830's were "repaired" using concrete. Thanks to this book, I now know that these were actually designed for and "made" with poured structural concrete in the 1830's....a real engineering marvel! I originally bought this as a Kindle edition, but liked it enough to buy the book for my father for Christmas.

I've been in the concrete business for over 40 years and a 3rd generation concrete finisher, form builder, and contractor. This is the best book on the history of concrete I have ever read, and I've read plenty. It should be required reading for every architect and engineering student. Great read, written in way everyone, both academic and layman can understand.

Good overview of cement history. Provoked numerous questions which is good. Is the 2000 year old Pantheon concrete cracking? Yes, no, why not. Does poz // fly ash react with liberated lime to improve long term concrete quality? How far along the technical road is truly modern, high tech concrete in achieving long term stability, non-cracking material? Nice history review via a specific technical timeline of cement development.

I'm slightly speechless at how deeply this book is speaking to my soul, and my lived experience as a sexual person. It's touching, heartbreaking and hits so very close to home. I love this memoir and recommend it to everyone.

It was very enlightening. Emily writes with a talent that shows that all her days are ahead of her concerning books. A must read!

Daughter read it twice and really connected to the story.

The kindle version of this book has terrible formatting. Random letters are missing from words making it very difficult to read. Also, occasionally lines appear in extra large print covering other lines of text.

Unslut by Emily Linden is part diary and part commentary, both of which I have mixed feelings about. Linden’s memoir is also part of a bigger project, one which includes a documentary and an online forum. The project is intended to provide support to girls who have experienced “slut-shaming” and “sexual bullying”, a goal which I commend. As a diary, Unslut succeeds on some levels and not on others. Many girls in middle school face almost daily mood swings, run through friends like they do clothes, obsess about their dating life, and feel as if their world as they know it is over. In just one week’s worth of entries, LInden goes from loving her life to hating her life right back to loving her life. And in a month’s worth of entries, she’s lost some old friends while also gaining some new friends. As for her dating life, the diary brought back memories both of my own “love-me” and “love-me-not” odes, as well as that of the teen girls whom I have mentored. The turmoil of an adolescent girl’s life seemingly never ends. On all these accounts, the diary succeeds.Where the diary fails is its non-stop entries about boys, boys, and boys. Even in middle school, girls do have other worries such as: their looks, their grades, their parents, their teachers, and their future. In her commentary, Linde herself refers to a summer camp where no one knew her as anything but an enthusiastic singer, suggesting that a world did exist for her outside of boys. Yet I don’t get that idea from Unslut, which is supposedly a word-by-word reprint of her diary. Instead Unslut leads me to believe that every emotion, every friendship, and every choice that Linden made arose from status in the dating world. As such, the diary feels counterproductive to the modern empowerment messages for women. With regards to the commentary, it too succeeds on some levels and not on others. Linden’s explanation of how popularity was evaluated and of what the four sexual bases meant to her generation provides helpful context to her diary. Even informing readers of such trivial matters such as what a certain candy tasted like or what certain singers sang like was interesting in its own way. On the flip side, Linden’s snarky comments and moralizing statements detracted from my ability to enjoy the emotional narrative of an eleven-year-old. Moreover, because they’re incorporated as annotations to her diary entries, the comments felt cumbersome to read. Finally, I have a caution. A quote on the back cover says that the diary should be required reading for all teens. Unless this happens with parental guidance, I disagree. First, there’s the casual use of the F word. Second, there are explicit sex scenes. Third, Linden claims there’s a double-standard, but then doesn’t consider the pressures that guys themselves might face to know if a double-standard really exists. Fourth, I’m not completely comfortable with Linden’s message. Is she saying that society should be more careful in how it discourages sexual activity or that teens should be encouraged to explore all the bases? There’s an important difference.Linden’s heart is in the right place with The Unslut project. Her online project has apparently caused many females to share their own stories of being labeled sluts. I hope that her printed memoir will stir an equal amount of discussion, for it is only in talking about why adolescents obsess about the opposite sex, desire to reach third (or fourth) base, and then condemn each other for these choices will we truly grow as a society. I'm just not sure it will.

I heard of the UnSlut Project years ago and was happy to hear that some people were doing their part to destroy stereotypes and try to change everyday discourse about how certain words define a woman and her reputation. With that said, I was a bit disappointed with this book.First and foremost, two readings are recommended of this book to get a better picture: The first to read Ms. Lindin's school days diary and the second to read the generous foot notes, which are her adult observations of those days. Those elements are the equivalent of two books in one. In the end, it can be frustrating to have to stop reading with every asterisk to get the full point of that incident. Now, the publisher did warn readers about the footnotes in their Introduction, but it was still frustrating reading despite the warning.Second, there is no clear objective in publishing these entries as they were. It's just everyday life with everyday happenings. Sure, that may have been the point - to present life as it happened and how the author dealt with things as they came along, but the reading got tedious many times along the way with that setup. You keep wondering, “Okay, what's the point again?” By the time you're done reading even a paragraph, and then the accompanying pile of footnotes, you wind up wondering what you were reading about in the first place and have to start all over again ... if you're so inclined. At best, what could have been done was to use entries with a common theme no matter the lapse in time. It would have made for a better story in the end and enabled the reader to get a clearer sense of the points the author wanted to make. It just wasn't necessary to show us everything or nearly everything. Might I suggest the power of mystery here? In the end, it's just nice to leave it to the reader to fill in the proverbial blanks. From the start, I felt as if I were thrown into the deep end and told to sink or swim … with no lessons to guide me. Yes, it's obvious that's the way a diary is structured – just jumping into things because the author knows what's what and who's who. They're not inclined to lay out a cast of characters or motivation because the former is pointless and the latter is guess work. Besides, diaries are obviously not intended for prying eyes if the author can help it.But the randomness of the entries made for tedious reading and the general layout of the book was taxing to say the least.Ms. Lindin shows us the message of what it feels like to have your reputation compromised at such a young age due to one nasty word, but you have to chop through some tall weeds to get to that message. - Donna Di Giacomo

Emily Lindin would have been better off writing a straight memoir with quotes from her journals rather than making the writings of an 11 year old child the focus of the book. There was only so much of the disjointed musings from the author's preteen years that I could take before I set the book aside. As a grandparent of a girl of the same age, I cringed...these are the years to still be a child, not dealing with which "base" is okay to go to whilst on a date. Bullying is wrong, being shamed is wrong and disturbing, but I hope this boy crazy obsession in a 6th grader is not all that common. Little kids should not have to be dealing with things my generation did not experience until we were in our late teens at the earliest. As disturbing as I find this book, I am glad that it enlightened me to the reality of life for far too many young girls. I will speak out against bullying and definitely share the book with parents of pre-teen children.

Review

"The master prose stylist portrays parallel basketball worlds in New York City: Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks won the 1969-1970 championship, and the playgrounds of Harlem, where stars such as Earl (the Goat) Manigault burned brightly but too briefly."—Sports Illustrated (Sports Illustrated)"The best description of basketball played in New York City streets during the sixties and seventies."—Bill Bradley, The New Yorker (Bill Bradley The New Yorker)"Superb . . . [Axthelm] combines Knick history, player backgrounds, seasonal anecdotes and court triumphs with another phenomenon—city basketball in the crowded ghettoes of the nation. The areas he focuses on primarily are the asphalt playgrounds of Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant. There basketball has its special code of behavior, its pecking order and its own culture heroes. . . . A few city playground aces have made it to college . . . , and a few have found an escape route to the Harlem Globetrotters or the Eastern League. But many others have become strung out on poverty or drugs or have been imprisoned. . . . The book offers absorbing insights into the most unique and gripping of all city sports."—Rex Lardner, New York Times (Rex Lardner New York Times)

This is THE one you must own if you are a "oldschool" NBA fan, a NY Knick fan or a fan of the greatest "proving ground" in basketball lore -the schoolyards and playgrounds of NYC !!.I owned the original printing as a kid in 1970 and it quickly became the "must have" for every Knick fan due to the amazing "blow'by'blow" description of the "Miracle on 33rd.St", The NBA Championship won by The 1969 NY Knicks . Quite possibly the greatest NBA team ever assembled.

I purchased this one for my son also. He is a retired athlete and just loves books about the history of sports in general and everything concerningsports. He says he learned alot about the development of basketball by reading this book. He gives it a "thumbs up" rating.

Pete Axthelm has a handle on what makes basketball a wonderful sport, and why many of us are in love with it. He doesn't seem to know exactly what he wants to do with this book. Is he reporting on inner-city basketball heroes? On their gravity-defying dunks, or their lightning-quick handles? Or is he reporting on 1970, the year the Knicks won the NBA Championship. The two stories don't intertwin seemlessly as he would have them, and you are left feeling like you haven't been fulfilled on either of the stories in this book. I gave this book 4 stars based more on his obvious joy in writting it (which makes it very fun to read) than his actual skill in writting it. I would have been much happier buying two books as long as this one, one on inner-city basketball in New York City, and one on the Knicks Championship of 1970.

love it. bought it after hearing it quoted in Rebound movie with Don Cheadle.

Well written and informative. Any Basketball fan with enjoy

Enjoyable reading for any real basketball fan

I bought this to read about theGoat, Earl Manigault. It didn't let me down. I saw the movie rebound and was eager to buy this.
