His grandfather—my great-grandfather John Hawking—had been a wealthy farmer, but he had bought too many farms and had gone bankrupt in the agricultural depression at the beginning of this century. His son Robert—my grandfather—tried to help his father but went bankrupt himself. Fortunately, Robert’s wife owned a house in Boroughbridge in which she ran a school, and this brought in a small amount of income. They thus managed to send their son to Oxford, where he studied medicine.My father won a series of scholarships and prizes, which enabled him to send money back to his parents. He then went into research in tropical medicine, and in 1937 he traveled to East Africa as part of his research. When the war began, he made an overland journey across Africa and down the Congo River to get a ship back to England, where he volunteered for military service. He was told, however, that he was more valuable in medical research.My mother was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the third of eight children of a family doctor. The eldest was a girl with Down syndrome, who lived separately with a caregiver until she died at the age of thirteen. The family moved south to Devon when my mother was twelve. Like my father’s family, hers was not well off. Nevertheless, they too managed to send my mother to Oxford. After Oxford, she had various jobs, including that of inspector of taxes, which she did not like. She gave that up to become a secretary, which was how she met my father in the early years of the war.I was born on January 8, 1942, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. I estimate, however, that about two hundred thousand other babies were also born that day. I don’t know whether any of them was later interested in astronomy.I was born in Oxford, even though my parents were living in London. This was because during World War II, the Germans had an agreement that they would not bomb Oxford and Cambridge, in return for the British not bombing Heidelberg and Göttingen. It is a pity that this civilized sort of arrangement couldn’t have been extended to more cities.We lived in Highgate, in north London. My sister Mary was born eighteen months after me, and I’m told I did not welcome her arrival. All through our childhood there was a certain tension between us, fed by the narrow difference in our ages. In our adult life, however, this tension has disappeared, as we have gone different ways. She became a doctor, which pleased my father.My sister Philippa was born when I was nearly five and better able to understand what was happening. I can remember looking forward to her arrival so that there would be three of us to play games. She was a very intense and perceptive child, and I always respected her judgment and opinions. My brother, Edward, was adopted much later, when I was fourteen, so he hardly entered my childhood at all. He was very different from the other three children, being completely non-academic and non-intellectual, which was probably good for us. He was a rather difficult child, but one couldn’t help liking him. He died in 2004 from a cause that was never properly determined; the most likely explanation is that he was poisoned by fumes from the glue he was using for renovations in his flat.My earliest memory is of standing in the nursery of Byron House School in Highgate and crying my head off. All around me, children were playing with what seemed like wonderful toys, and I wanted to join in. But I was only two and a half, this was the first time I had been left with people I didn’t know, and I was scared. I think my parents were rather surprised at my reaction, because I was their first child and they had been following child development textbooks that said that children ought to be ready to start making social relationships at two. But they took me away after that awful morning and didn’t send me back to Byron House for another year and a half.At that time, during and just after the war, Highgate was an area in which a number of scientific and academic people lived. (In another country they would have been called intellectuals, but the English have never admitted to having any intellectuals.) All these parents sent their children to Byron House School, which was a very progressive school for those times.I remember complaining to my parents that the school wasn’t teaching me anything. The educators at Byron House didn’t believe in what was then the accepted way of drilling things into you. Instead, you were supposed to learn to read without realizing you were being taught. In the end, I did learn to read, but not until the fairly late age of eight. My sister Philippa was taught to read by more conventional methods and could read by the age of four. But then, she was definitely brighter than me.We lived in a tall, narrow Victorian house, which my parents had bought very cheaply during the war, when everyone thought London was going to be bombed flat. In fact, a V-2 rocket landed a few houses away from ours. I was away with my mother and sister at the time, but my father was in the house. Fortunately, he was not hurt, and the house was not badly damaged. But for years there was a large bomb site down the road, on which I used to play with my friend Howard, who lived three doors the other way. Howard was a revelation to me because his parents weren’t intellectuals like the parents of all the other children I knew. He went to the council school, not Byron House, and he knew about football and boxing, sports that my parents wouldn’t have dreamed of following.Another early memory was getting my first train set. Toys were not manufactured during the war, at least not for the home market. But I had a passionate interest in model trains. My father tried making me a wooden train, but that didn’t satisfy me, as I wanted something that moved on its own. So he got a secondhand clockwork train, repaired it with a soldering iron, and gave it to me for Christmas when I was nearly three. That train didn’t work very well. But my father went to America just after the war, and when he came back on the Queen Mary he brought my mother some nylons, which were not obtainable in Britain at that time. He brought my sister Mary a doll that closed its eyes when you laid it down. And he brought me an American train, complete with a cowcatcher and a figure-eight track. I can still remember my excitement as I opened the box.Clockwork trains, which you had to wind up, were all very well, but what I really wanted were electric trains. I used to spend hours watching a model railway club layout in Crouch End, near Highgate. I dreamed about electric trains. Finally, when both my parents were away somewhere, I took the opportunity to draw out of the Post Office bank all of the very modest amount of money that people had given me on special occasions such as my christening. I used the money to buy an electric train set, but frustratingly enough, it didn’t work very well either. I should have taken the set back and demanded that the shop or manufacturer replace it, but in those days the attitude was that it was a privilege to buy something, and it was just your bad luck if it turned out to be faulty. So I paid for the electric motor of the engine to be serviced, but it never worked very well, even then.Later on, in my teens, I built model airplanes and boats. I was never very good with my hands, but I did this with my school friend John McClenahan, who was much better and whose father had a workshop in their house. My aim was always to build working models that I could control. I didn’t care what they looked like. I think it was the same drive that led me to invent a series of very complicated games with another school friend, Roger Ferneyhough. There was a manufacturing game, complete with factories in which units of different colors were made, roads and railways on which they were carried, and a stock market. There was a war game, played on a board of four thousand squares, and even a feudal game, in which each player was a whole dynasty, with a family tree. I think these games, as well as the trains, boats, and airplanes, came from an urge to know how systems worked and how to control them. Since I began my PhD, this need has been met by my research into cosmology. If you understand how the universe operates, you control it, in a way.

Stephen Hawking is not only a great scientist but he is also an exemplar of grit, optimism and good humor. He is as famous for his triumph over a devastating disease and his determined survival as he is for his scientific brilliance. His book "A Brief History of Time" introduced millions of people to the wonders of the universe. This short memoir now introduces people to his own life which has not been any less wondrous. Those who have read the biographies by John Gribbin and Michael White or by Jane Hawking may not find much that is new in here, but the book definitely benefits from Hawking's simple and illuminating writing style and dry sense of humor. Suffering from an illness like ALS can definitely lead someone to express themselves with economy and clarity.As the title indicates, the book is very short (144 pages) and is divided into even shorter chapters. Each chapter is more like a snippet that focuses on one particular topic. The earlier chapters deal with Hawking's upbringing in London as the son of caring and slightly eccentric parents, his education at Oxford and Cambridge and his initial struggles with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hawking gives us a good idea of the pioneering research on black holes and the Big Bang which he did with Roger Penrose and others. There are also anecdotes about other scientists like Richard Feynman and encounters with celebrities like Popes and Presidents. Hawking talks unflinchingly about his disease without a hint of self-pity, and this is a quality that continues to make him so widely admired, sometimes to the point of reverence.The later chapters deal with his current research on quantum gravity, his various trips to different parts of the world (including a few weeks spent every year at Caltech) and his two divorces. One revealing part of the book is Hawking's description of the several occasions on which he was on the brink of death; it was only the dedication of his wives, Jane and Elaine, that saved his life. Old and new photographs (some showcasing Hawking's bawdy sense of humor) enliven the narrative. The book ends on a characteristically optimistic note. Hawking says that his devastating illness has not held him back from fully living life and he is grateful for his gifts and for the support others have given him. There's some useful advice there for all of us.

Ever since I saw the movie, "Theory of Everything", life of Stephen Hawking, I have been a bit obsessed with him. I read this book twice, first from the library, then my own copy :). His life is an amazing story. He was diagnosed with ALS at 21 and given 2-3 years to live! He was born January, 1942 and is already 73! He is still working, writing books and traveling. Years ago he lost his ability to use his hands and later lost speech. His brain is a genius living in a body that can't do much but keep him alive. Witty and clever and at times charming, he has received almost every honor available to a scientist by governments, institutions, and churches. The book is brief and gives some insight into his life-very interesting- has a few chapters on his science--which goes over my head--but fascinating to know what his passion is. It has lots of great pictures of family and professional colleagues. I am so glad he has lived long enough to contribute so much to his field. (And to be around for his three children, of whom he is rightfully proud.) Now I am reading his ex-wife's book about their 25 year marriage, on which the movie was based. WOW!

The author, Stephen Hawking, wrote about his life as a brilliant scientist, a husband, a father, and a man living with an incurable disease. Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. He received his education at both Oxford and Cambridge and is the author of numerous books and scientific articles in which he wrote through use of augmentative and alternative communication.Hawking wrote this memoir himself with use of his AAC technology, an eye tracking system, that he was able to use on his computer to type. Basically, instead of typing with his hands he typed with his eyes. He had a little help after the initial writing from a literary agent, Al Zuckerman, and then before publishing Bantam’s editor Peter Guzzardi helped rewrite and revise his work before its final publishing. His book was an easy read in my opinion with clear chapters and thought out ideas. I am impressed by his ability to write the majority of this book himself and just through use of his eyes to type. It could not have been easy for a man using AAC to write an entire book. He must have had a lot of patience, perseverance, and practice with his technology in order to write such great literary works over his lifetime.This book would be great for someone looking for a brief insight into Hawking’s overall life. I was not interested in the majority of the science jargon he spoke of but science and theoretical research is much of how he spent his life I found out. I was primarily interested in Hawking’s book because he had a disease, ALS, in which as a future speech-language pathology is a disease I am interested in. ALS relates to speech pathology in that individuals with ALS lose the ability to use their voice and have to rely on augmentative and alternative ways to communicate. He received a tracheotomy which took away his ability to speak “For a time, the only way I could communicate was to spell out words letter by letter by raising my eyebrows when someone pointed to the right letter on a spelling card” (Hawking, pg. 85). He had multiple increases in technology over his lifetime living with ALS and the one he spoke of most was a device called an equalizer which worked with an eye tracking system so he could continue to live his life even without a voice. He would use the eye tracking device to spell or select what he wanted to say and the device was able to say it out loud for him.His memoir opened my eyes to how much of his life he lived being cared for by person after person. I was surprised that he spent the majority of his life traveling, moving, and having so many different care takers. At one point he was being cared for by students “I also had one of my research students live with us. He helped me with getting up and going to bed and some meals…” (Hawking, pg. 77). I cannot imagine being married, two children in the house, and now a student all under one roof. It must not have been easy on his wife and family living with his disease and having to have additional people in the house caring for your father or husband. Hawking had a great outlook on life, he spoke of his first wife’s depression on more than one occasion and how she struggled to cope with having children along with her husband’s disability. He kept a positive attitude and was motivated by the possibility of death being soon and he was determined to work hard and make a difference before death. “When you are faced with the possibility of an early death, it makes you realize that life is worth living and that there are lots of things you want to do” (Hawking, pg. 37). In his memoir he did not speak of the bad times, the struggles, or the pain, he only spoke of the positives which amazed me and says a lot about his character.I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Stephen Hawking and who is looking for a brief look into what his life was like. The book was insightful and eye opening to what a long life with the disease ALS is like. His memoir was inspiring and uplifting to think that you can be successful even without a voice.

This book is probably going to save my life. I feel totally devastated by the loss of 2 beloved cats in less than a 3 week span of time. The sudden and unexpected death of Tony (12 years old) and the expected but no less devastating loss of Meena (17 years old) to her kidney and heart disease. Tony died first and I was stunned and floored by the extreme pain of the grief and sadness ... all the while continuing intense care for Meena and knowing our time was limited. I got this book and started reading it before Meena passed & I am very thankful I did. It offers exactly what the cover says, soul comfort. In addition to that it has many practical suggestions and tons of good resources. It's a small book which is good because I couldn't deal with anything complicated right now. My grief is so intense and raw. No other loss has ever hit me like this. But this book is a big help and guide to being able to go on. I'm on my second read thru. I've got notes I took from it and some additional reading to do as I am able. I highly recommend this book.

I'm grieving from the loss of our extraordinary, loving, handsome fur baby Smokey, who died a month ago from congestive heart failure. The vets only gave him 6 months, but we had him a year with a lot of meds. I have a ton of guilt how he died, and that he was only 9 1/2 years old. I'm getting help from this book, and finding comfort that I'm not alone in my grief and feelings of guilt, regret, etc. She even talks about NDE (Near Death Experiences) which people have had that were peaceful and comforting, and they saw relatives, etc. There are too many to dismiss as coincidence and that helps me too. I believe, as she does, that animals also go to a heavenly, peaceful place, free from pain & suffering. That's comforting.Also, the fact that there isn't "closure" with pet loss - there is still contact with our beloved babies after they've passed if we're open to them. I had done some of the things she recommends already, and will continue to read this wonderful book. I got it on my e-reader, but I highly recommend it in any form.

Read this book, try some of its suggestions, and hang on...because you can and will be whole again.What I like about this book is that it's a simple, easy read, and that's what we need when our grief is fresh. Nothing too complicated, nothing too overwhelming, just something we can get our confused heads around. When you read a suggestion or idea that resonates--something that gives you that sense of a little bell going off inside you somewhere--there are plenty of suggested readings that can help you delve deep into things that will help you heal. And before you rush out to get another cat, be sure you read the section on how to know if you're ready--because it's very easy to make a mistake when your mind and heart are scrambled by loss.I speak from my own experience in all of this, having lost my soul mate kitty three years ago. This book was the life preserver that kept me afloat for months as I floundered in a sea of pain. I still miss my cat every day, and sometimes, when the tide runs too high, I turn again to the ideas in this book for stability and comfort. I continue to heal...and that healing has been greatly speeded by a recent spiritual insight in which I really understood, on a gut level, that my cat is not gone--she's still alive inside of me.I mean that literally: I believe that the absence death seems to create is an illusion, and the truth is that there is no distance or separation between us and our "lost" kitties. And that's THE most important reason why I recommend this book. Liz Eastwood takes a rare and much-needed spiritual approach to losing your cat that I found paved the way for me to understand that my relationship with my cat really is unbroken.My wish is that everyone who reads this review finds comfort after losing their own little bundle of fur-covered love--and I truly think this book can give you that, especially if there is no one in your life who gets what you're going through. So give it a try. You've got nothing to lose but your pain.

As an adult, I called two cats mine: Tripawd, my pastel calico, 3-legged hoppy girl who I said good bye to 2-1/2 years ago. It was one of the hardest things I have ever gone through and this book really helped me understand the enormous tornado of emotions I was going through (and continue to go through). I recommend it to anyone who has lost a furr-friend and needs help coping with the grief process and with the overall loss.

As another reviewer said, you have to have an open mind to read this book. And, I think, a twisted sense of humor. It's like the author took some facets of reality, put them in a can, shook it up and tossed them out to see what happened. I think some of the pieces broke along the way.Nathan lives in Dead Donkey, Nevada where everything sucks (but not for long). The buses run one way, the travel agency charges low prices to come to town and gouges people trying to get out. Nathan's neighbor shoots at salesmen, street lamps and anything else that strikes his fancy. Arson is a booming business, aided by incompetent firemen.Then Nathan dies and finds out what a bureaucratic nightmare death can be.This could be the strangest book I ever read. I gave it 5 stars because as weird as it was, it worked and I think Andrew deserves some credit for pulling it off.

I loved this book! The main character was raised by his father because his mother left before he was born. While nonsensical, the sentence works just fine in the context of the novel. A favorite author and acquaintance once told me that a concept doesn't have to work in my reality if it works in its own, and in the bureaucratic world of Andrew Stanek, it doesn't seem the least bit odd for a mother to leave her unborn child with its father.If Lewis Carroll, Douglas Adams,and Monty Python collaborated on a novel, the finished product might look something like this.

I like humorous fiction, but this was terrible. Perhaps children would find it entertaining, but not me. It is very repetitive and the jokes just aren't very good. I gave up after a few chapters, and I'm glad I got it when it was free.

The first four chapters started out good. But the writing style in the fifth chapter turned high-schoolish; too much detail thrown in that's unnecessary to the story.The first four chapters were quite Monty Python-esque, with heavy influence, as others have noted, from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think I detected a bit of P. G. Wodehouse, too. All three are worthy of emulation, but I think the author tried too hard.The author shows a lot of promise. I hope he hones his skill with writing courses. Orson Scott Card's free writing class/lessons and workshops at his official web site, Hatrack River (amzn doesn't allow urls in reviews), would likely fit Stanek.As long as this ebook is free, I can kinda/sorta recommend it for Python/HGttG fans of any age, as you will enjoy the first four chapters. Chapter 5 will be the make-or-break to determine if you want to finish. I did not finish.

For the many of us missing Douglas Adams and his twisted view of life and the universe, this is a lovely "echo" of his writing style.Its not really much of a "story" but could have been a chapter from "The Hitchhikers Guide." If you enjoyed that book, this will be right up your alley. All of which may sound like I'm being flippant...certainly not...to be compared to Adams is a massive compliment. And if you have heavy disdain for bureaucracy, you'll love the satire here.

This is a good book that had me laughing in many places, but, as other reviewers have said, it's a little bit muddled in terms of the setting and characters mostly being included to set up a running gag about bureaucrats and the disasters they create both in the realm of the living and the dead. When reading this, keep in mind that it's an invented world, similar to the universe where The Tick lives... where insane people and odd happenings are just expected in the worst city in the world, Dead Donkey. There are a lot of tangents where the story jumps the tracks to build for a laugh. While I didn't give this book five stars, I'd still recommend it as a light read for some chuckles. If you miss the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, you'll enjoy reading these books as a similar... style and craziness.

This is a, well, "different" book. It pokes fun at bureaucrats, death, bureaucrats, Nevada, and bureaucrats. And paperwork. The thesis is just plausible enough to make you wonder if it truly is rooted in reality and also makes you wonder at times if the author knows something we don't know (probably not, but still!). I wouldn't hesitate to read other books in this series from this author.P.S. - Four stars because John Steinbeck didn't write it and the author hasn't won a Pulitzer prize. Yet. Besides, the bureaucrats wouldn't sign an "Authorization to give this book a five star review on Amazon" before lunch.

Madcap is an understatement. The best part of this book is that the author not only pokes fun at bureaucracy, but at the reader, too. (Who bothered to lookup the word tontineYou Are Dead. (Sign Here Please) or Quaestor?) So many laugh out loud moments to take away from the winter doldrums (yes, I have cabin fever). Looking forward to You Are a Ghost (sign here, please).

My 6 year old loves this story. This is a great intro story for a young person. While it leaves out some of the more colorful aspects of her life it doesn’t forget how mischievous she was or how much her and her husband didn’t get along. I loved that it was touched on how she created her style of painting. I was able to expand on those concepts with my daughter and it was a great impromptu art history lesson. We will be riding more of these books.

It's a lot of information just because her life is full of excitement. My 2nd grader read it multiple times because she wanted to know more. She kept going back n look at some details, and at times had to look up words from dictionary. Lots of facts for this age group. I would recommend higher age groups

Was just pretty much a list if facts. Dissappointed in my purchase. I want a story about Frida.....not a fact sheet. Didn't move me at all and that's what Frida was. A moving human.

Before I gave this book to my granddaughter, I read it and learned so much in a delightful way about this great artist. I will buy more from this series to read and then pass on to the grand kids.

This was my first "Who was/is" purchase. It was right on target for the age group. We will purchase another.

My daughter is fascinated with Frida Kahlo so this is the perfect birthday present for her!

The "Who Was" Books are the perfect read for kids, but I love them as an art teacher. I only see my students once a week, and like to give them a juicy detail about the artist we are studying. These books are a super quick review for me, and give me great information to teach.

The biography is complete and interesting for young learners. I bought them for students who learn English as a second language and they are suitable for them.

I love Palmers writing and I have all of her books. However, they keep releasing her books under different names so I end up buying the same book more than once. That is so annoying. I don't know if Ms Palmer no longer writes new books but this is the LAST book I'm buying.

What's the name of the other book? I didn't read it.As for this one, Dal Blake didn't deserve Meadow. He took his words too far. His grandfather was physically abusive and Dal was verbally abusive. He didn't have the integrity and the honor to deserve Meadow. She was way too forgiving and should've made him work on his "change". It was way too quick and way too easy for him. He took his behavior too far. He was nothing but verbally abusive to her. It's hard to believe the "love".There should've been more on Meadow's medical condition that was mentioned in the last paragraph of the book. She was way too "flighty" to ever be believable as a police officer let alone someone with the FBI. The medical condition earlier on would've made that understandable. But her job was not believable with her behavior.This book was disappointing. Having Meadow fall all over an abusive man wasn't romantic in the least.

Another rerelease! Not going to purchase another Diana Palmer book without reading the reviews first! It's disrespecful to her loyal fans to release books under a new title! This one wasn't one of her best either so feel doubly disappointed.

Well after over 30 years of reading romance novels I am saying goodbye to a queen of romance. I can no longer find it romantic or loving for the male character to call young women whores and sluts to fight off their feelings.A mature man could control himself without humiliating or tearing down another human being. Especially a person that he miraculously in the last 20 pages decides he loves. Then it is always big climax when he says some really insulting things to the young woman but all is forgiven because he has now decided he loves her more than life itself.Then the slight political commentary suggesting that liberals are not patriotic or believe in the constitution. Done! We get far too much of each side are terrible people in the media that I don’t want it in my “escape” reading.I say goodbye with much love and some good memories. But I would not want my daughter to accept this type of treatment from anyone.

This book is horrible, the worst to date, not worth one star. Does Diana Palmer think her readers enjoy emotionally and verbally abusive men and weak young women? After reading this book I am ashamed to admit I was a big fan of her pre 1990 books. She has always written about male chauvinistic men and women virgins 10 to 15 years younger, but the men were never this abusive and the women were never this naive, needy and imbecilic! This book was originally published under the title Christmas with My Cowboy and I failed to look up the original publishing date, I thought it was an older book that I had missed, had I known it was a recent book I would have never bought it. Palmer’s books in the last 10 years have become preachy and she uses her books to convey her opinions on everything from abused animals to premarital sex. I read to escape reality, I don’t care about her opinion on politics or anything else for that matter. In Palmer’s world it is ok for men to have premarital sex, verbally abuse and belittle young women, but the women must be innocent virgins that accept the verbal abuse because in the end they get the man.

Meh.Not what I expect from one of her books. Not one of her best books but not every one can be stellar.

As authors go she is very prolific. What she needs is a good proof reader. Some of her book's are very well done. This is not one of them. The storyline has been often used by her. And the people are not very smart. The potential is there but not the follow thru.

An interesting,fun read.Mystery,thrills and suspense and a really enjoyable experience.Diana Palmer never disappoints,she grip it every time.I can't wait for her next book.
