About the Author

Her birth in a D.P. camp in Germany marked Ettie Zilber with a special responsibility. Retirement from a career as an educator in international schools in six countries has given her the opportunity to fulfill that responsibility --to research and document her family's Holocaust experiences -- and reflect on their impact on the next generation. Ettie's book is a very real first-person narrative of her mother's survival during the Holocaust. It is written in the mother's words, but it is about the Holocaust experience of many family members as well. The book shows an amazing ability to survive, do what needed to be done, and remain hopeful and positive regardless of separation from family members and dealing with all the horrors perpetrated against Jewish people. Her solution was to form very strong bonds with other women walking the same road as she. The hardship was very real and heart-wrenching. It is very well documented with footnotes and references. The book is in 3 parts. After the mother's story, part 2 is about the eldest daughter's 3-week travel to Lithuania and Poland with a long list of names, places, dates, and events. With the help of a guide and visits to Holocaust museums and digging into historical archives she was able to confirm her mother's story and make a few editorial changes to some details. Part 3 was an interesting analysis of the impact on the lives of the children of Holocaust-surviving parents. (The author was actually born in a Displaced Person's camp in Europe after the war ended before her parents---reunited only after the war---immigrated to the US.) Ettie researched this aspect within her own family and with other families living in NYC.

It was an amazing true story of a strong beautiful woman who went through and survived such horrible circumstances during the holocaust in Lithuania. It is amazing and scary to see how neighbors around her and her family turned on them and assisted the Germans in all the atrocities committed during the years of being in a ghetto and concentration camp and even after they were released. I couldn't put this book down!

The book is an accurate account of the authors families experiences during the Holocaust. It is a tribute to her mother and all of the family members who survived and those who perished during this time in history. What her family endured epitomizes"Mans Inhumanity to Man".Exposure to the stories that her mother and father told during her childhood created an intense desire to validate these stories as well as well as walk in their footsteps. And so, her journey began. The book methodically details her journey and the mixture of emotions felt in so doing.From a very personal perspective, she describes the effects on children of Holocaust survivors. She explores the scientific as well as the environmental causes for these intensely personal and painful experiences.Every year, the family members and their children uphold the tradition of gathering at their parens grave in Israel. Zlata, a strong resourceful woman who was able to survive a series of atrocities and yet lived on with a positive but realistic attitude toward life. Ettie, a the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, who allowed herself to be exposed to her mother's oral history, to travel to Europe to document and to relive her mother's inhuman treatment. Ettie does an excellent scholarly, yet extremely personal, exploration of how she (and her extended family) were affected by her parents experiences.A well-written, personal story that needs to be read and used as a teaching tool so that the "Holocaust cannot be denied, minimized or forgotten". This is an amazing account of Zlata Sidrer's life in Kaunas Lithuania before the Holocaust and her incredible tale of survival. The author, Ettie Zilber, uses the literary device of keeping the testimony in Zlata's voice, which makes it very authentic. One could almost hear Zlata's voice while reading her testimony which distinguishes this book from many other books about the Holocaust, including memoirs. In the remainder of the book, Ettie reflects on the impact of her family's experiences on her own beliefs and behavior, thus contributing to the growing body of evidence on the impact of survivors' experiences on their children's DNA.

This book is so mind blowing that i bought 2, so i can give one as a gift to a mathematician i know.Really, Cybernetics is so amazing that probably will be the reason that someone will save the world. Probably a few politicians should read this.

A fundamental book for systems engineers and control engineers. It sets the principles of our current understanding of robotics or other areas of cybernetics.

This print is extremely poor quality, do not be fooled by the "High Quality" tags on the cover page. I cannot even read the text. Since I'm not in the US i have trouble returning the item to Amazon. So just leaving this comment for everyone else to be aware.

Many books have been written on the topic of control system theory. After reading a number of such books I can say without reservation Dr. Ashby's is the best treatment of the subject, bar none. His perspective is unique and wholly comprehensive.To elaborate let me say that one of the goals of any introductory text is to provide a general overview of the subject matter in as clear and concise of manner as possible. Dr. Ashby does one better. Not only does he accomplish this aim, but while doing so he manages to develop a theoretical and technical foundation of understanding that goes right to the bedrock of eternity itself.For instance one of the most primitive but arcane concepts in all physics is entropy. I personally spent decades trying to reduce entropy to a simple understanding but was always confounded by the "entropy is a measure related to heat engines, but also related to disorder," rhetoric. After all, pragmatically what do heat engines and scrambled eggs have in common? I sure wasn't able to connect the dots in any kind of intelligent way. Moreover it seemed no one else could either. After reading dozens of various books on the matter the explanations of the authors always fell short of offering the simple enlightenment I sought. However, in "Intro to Cybernetics" Dr. Ashby not only explores entropy in a way that is drop-dead simple (the entropy factor is overshadowed by a general principle which governs more than a reservoir of heat energy), but he goes on to show how information and control principles are the flip-side of the entropy principle. Tersely, the entropy principle is abstractly about variety or choice (reflected in Boltzmann's S=kLogW), while information and control is about selection and constraint.Everyone has experience with this model. Consider that laundry taken from a dryer and cast on a bed can potentially fall into a multiplicity of different arrangements. But it is only after a cybernetic mechanism uses certain rules of selection to apply some measure of constraint that the state of the laundry converges to an orderly stack. Also consider that a car moving along a roadway literally has innumerable trajectories it can follow at any point along the path. However cars typically arrive safely at their destinations thanks to a control mechanism which uses sophisticated selection rules to apply constraint to the vehicle so as to avoid disastrous outcomes. Moreover, The unique selections of genes and genetic activity in the metabolisms of various organisms act to constrain the ordering of raw matter to the specific types of structures and behaviors these things possess. This too is an example of how information and control mechanisms limit the possible arrangements of matter to a very narrow subset, i.e. a dog, a cat, etc.In fact, Dr. Ashby is able to show how this abstract model of variety vs. constraint literally expands so as to overshadow everything going on under the sun, from the very simple to the highly sophisticated. Nobody explains this model better than W. Ross Ashby. In fact, I don't know of anyone who's talked about the subject in this manner. For this, I think Dr. Ashby was a true visionary, and surely one of the great minds of science in the twentieth century.An Introduction to Cybernetics is clearly a classic work equivalent to Newton's Principia Mathematica. Everyone with an interest in science and engineering should read it. Some formal training in science and engineering is probably a necessary prerequisite for getting the most from it.

Ashby's revelations are so profound that it's almost a disservice to refer to this as a book. Those revelations will not come easily. Ashby develops a very precise vocabulary and it is essential for understanding to learn and remember their meaning. It is this new vocabulary that makes it possible to see the world in a different light.The impact of those revelations affected my abilities enough that in graduate school cybernetics was made part of the curriculum and later in a business environment the company's middle-management was required to take a course on the subject.Cybernetics (I prefer Informational Mechanics) is a math similar to geometry except that instead of dealing with shapes and space it deals with change, complex change.One particularly important aspect of that subject might be labeled the mechanics of human communication. In a nutshell Ashby shows how concepts from Shannon's Information Theory are applicable to human reasoning and communication. Again understanding those concepts is a life altering experience, but not easy.Learning informational mechanics is a little like learning algebra. You have to understand the fundamentals for it to be useful.I first read the book in 1957. Fifty-five years later I still refer to it.There are a number of copycat books that in essence parrot Ashby's vocabulary. They are relatively useless.

Fifteen chapters of designs: Stone Age Europe, Neolithic Europe, Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Minoan, Mycenaean, Greek, Chinese, Early Celtic, Barbarian, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Japanese, and Art Deco. Obviously, some chapters denote time periods, where the later chapters are styles (Romaneque, for example) that prevailed in the culture.No one can tell for sure where one period ends and another begins and throughout history, each culture is influenced by another. But this book will give you a good starting point with which to describe the patterns you see in a design and, in some cases, the time period (the first 3 chapters) of the patterns that you see today. I'm not a Zentangle fan only because they seem to be pretentious in the pattern naming schemes, taking ancient patterns and motifs and making up new names for them. This book is a great reference in demystifying the REAL origin of patters and motifs. You'll find, however, that one book won't be enough. Another good book, if you want more historical information as well as great images is "Designs and Patterns From Historic Ornament" by W. and G. Audsley. Also, if you like paisleys, dots, and swirls check out ANY book about Mehndi art. Mehndi art is ancient art of painting the hands, feet, and sometimes other parts of the body for celebratory purposes. Great design inspiration there too.I've included 3 photos to give you a rough idea of the contents of the book. The first 5 pages are words, the rest are all filled with images!

This is a great book for helping generate your own ideas for designs. One reviewer was disappointed that the designs are copyrighted and cannot be used for commercial purposes. Since I am trying to create some designs for possible commercial use, I am using the book only as a source for ideas, that is a "jumping off" place to make an interesting design of my own, without infringing on the copyright. I think this book is a great source of ideas for your own creations, as well as providing designs straight from the pages for personal use. As long as you keep in mind that all the designs are hand drawn and in black and white, and you either want to use the designs in your personal creations or as an inspiration to create new designs, in my opinion you will not be disappointed.

I am a fiber artist and enjoy creating with fabric. Just looking thru the book inspires me and carries me onto new and different ideas. The size of the book reinforces the idea that creativity is endless!

This is a great book for anyone who needs any kind of reference with patterns. It even gives you on some of them a small step by step on how to do it.I had used it back in college and finally decided to purchase it after many year. Much better than researching patterns and motifs online.

I purchased this book for art ideas, and there are a lot of motifs in here. Unfortunately,many of the designs do not appeal to ME, so I had to give it 3 stars and that is the only reason. Others might like more of the designs than I do. I wish this book had the "look inside" feature.

This was great! The story is simple, short, and sparsely illustrated but it still kept the attention of the 4th grade girls in my small group. The story seems to define drama as 1) spreading lies/embellishing and 2) telling other people's secrets. It also includes the llama's reason for being so dramatic - she thinks people will find her boring otherwise. I wish that the story also talked about "drama" in terms of butting into other peoples' business, tattling, and not using positive conflict resolution strategies.There's also a handful of worksheet activities at the end that are actually pretty decent (I usually think included worksheets/activities are lame), and they seem to have the additional aim of promoting positivity vs. negativity.

The kids love talking about the drama llama, easy to remember and use in guidance lessons. Can discuss with students the drama that affects them and how to stop it. Also easy to introduce the word drama. Students experience it, but not always away of the meaning. The only thing wrong was the worksheets were 'eh', but I was able to create my own.

It gets the point across, but the writing is mediocre.

Great book for kids of many ages about a topic that is getting so out of hand. Good for individual counseling and small groups.

Honestly one of my favorite books. I read it years ago and am now gifting it to a young scientist. It is a compelling read that intertwines David's story with the callous approach to nuclear energy in the early 20th century. Honestly this book is just a fun read, that is also informative. The pace of the book keeps up well, and you keep wondering how this could possibly happen. I really love the parts about his science teachers in school noting that he would never properly conduct any experiments, as he would throw out information that didn't stick to his hypothesis or just not test certain factors at all.

Had to be read for Pre-AP Chemistry. Really creeped me out that a high school kid could get a hold of all that stuff so easily and that he had no conscience about exposing everyone to all of that toxicity. For a guy so smart, he was really pretty dumb. My little brother who is a Boy Scout really liked the book too.

I learned a lot in this book. The last chapter has an anti-nuclear bent focused on the poor economics, but never detailed why nuclear isn’t economical. I was surprised both by how many disasters I had been unaware of and how few power plants are currently online.

I really disliked how this story was written like a 200 page long newspaper article, BUT personal feelings aside it was an interesting story that actually taught me a lot about nuclear power and chemistry.

Nice little story about what a kid can accomplish if he is interested in abstract subjects. I read this because it reminded me of myself in my teens when I was more interested in teaching myself than most anything else. My subject at the time was mechanical. Today I am a Mechanical Engineer and nearing retirement. One of my hobbies now is collecting radio active minerals from around the world.

I found something to admire in David Hahn . . . in terms of his imagination and resourcefulness in putting together the components of a breeder reactor . . . despite not being able to spell.I liked this book and I thought the writer presented a clear picture of what this literally radioactive Boy Scout was all about . . .It is a shame that those around David . . . for the most part . . were not more interested in him --- to nurture him and guide him in the right direction. He could have been a scientist in the truest sense of the word.More things I also found fascinating was the uses of radium in ordinary households (like clock paint and fish bait). . . until we find out that it caused all manners of cancer. How Hahn was able to get enough radioactive material to build a neutron gun -- for example, tritium from night-vision sights. How a book on chemistry experiments inspired him.I find David Hahn's story-- extraodinary. And I am sad for him and at the same time --- believe that I am all the richer for reading about this frail genius.

As both an Eagle Scout, Scout leader, and working in the commercial nuclear energy field, I felt that the book had a very anti-scout and anti-nuclear slant.The story of David Hahn, minus the anti-scout and anti-nuclear slant, was good. It shows that the current eduction system does not look for a student that excels in one particular area, but teach to the "average" student.

TOTALLY a disappointment! Nothing like what was summarized. WAY too much detail on radioactive material and hardly any on the boys life. Didn’t even finish it, it never got better.
