About the Author

Madeleine L'Engle (1918–2007) was born in New York City and attended Smith College. She wrote more than 60 books, the most famous of which is A Wrinkle In Time (1962), winner of the Newbery Award in 1963. L'Engle continued the story of the Murry family from A Wrinkle In Time with seven other novels (five of which are available as A Wrinkle In Time Quintent from Square Fish). She also wrote the famous series featuring the Austin family, beginning with the novel Meet The Austins (1960). L'Engle revisited the Austins four more times over the next three decades, concluding with Troubling a Star in 1994. The story of the Austins had some autobiographical elements, mirroring Madeleine's life and the life of her family. Madeleine L'Engle's last book, The Joys of Love, is a romantic, coming-of-age story she wrote back in the 1940s, and is being published by FSG.

When I was in 6th grade it felt like I was starting to "come alive".I was reaching out, reading a lot of fiction (and non fiction) that had never really appealed to me. My teacher was a very nice, creative *teacher* who was always looking for ways to engage her students to think and explore. We had a contest, to write letters to authors we liked, and I was the only one in the class who wrote to Madelein L'engle. Amazingly enough, she wrote back - she was the only author who cared (or had interest) in writing back to a child.I still cherish that letter she sent. So, 40+ years later I started to explore books that my children might find interesting. I was pleased to see that not only is A Wrinkle in Time still available, that it has flourished. And has sequels! After reading a few reviews here, I was disappointed to see that some of the reviewers look at this as political dogma, or religious doctrine. What they forget is that politics and religion are inherently part of any society, and that children need the opportunity to learn about what makes the society they live in what it is. Our American society is very chaotic, and at times terribly confusing. Being a "tween" just starting to come alive is a confusing and difficult time. The characters in this story are seeking to overcome problems that are at times overwhelming, terrifying, and seemingly far beyond their capabilities. Their "magical" assistants offer encouragement to the children, prompting them to use their resources to the utmost to accomplish a very worthwhile goal.As I re-read the story, it dawns on me that, in a very realistic way, the children's magical assistants are the embodiment of a great teacher that a child would cherish: helpful, encouraging, building the child up by letting the child grow through effort, mistakes, and finding their own way in the world, offering guidance but ultimately letting the child grow through lessons and experience. The challenges Meg and her family and friends overcome in many ways are symbolic of the challenges all children go through at those ages as they seek to find their way in the world. Maybe the story is Christian, but maybe it's also an allegory of what a child goes through learning who and what they are. And maybe it's more. This is a good thing. A truly great story has many possible interpretations, because life itself is complex and often confusing, and interweaves the thoughts, dreams, goals, and experiences of many different people. Madelein L'Engle does a masterful job of looking at life through the eyes of a child.A Wrinkle in Time is one of the greatest stories I've read, as a child and an adult, and it is certainly worth another read - and another thought - 40 years later. All this from an author who cared enough to write back to an 11 year old fan with her own unique words of encouragement.

This was the pivotal book of my early adolescence and is still a touchstone for me as an adult. No other book has had such a profound effect on my thinking, personality, spirituality, and character. I should clarify that I didn't then and don't now share her Christian interpretation of the universe which many people consider to be the essence of this book and much of her writing. For me, this book reminded me to say yes to life, to accept responsibility, to be brave even when frightened, not to make decisions based on fear, and to accept people as they are. The lessons that I learned from this book have seen me through some very difficult episodes. She gave me the strength to do what was right even when that action was dangerous. I found this book when I was 12. I will be 59 next month and I still read it once or twice a year. I am convinced that it is partly responsible for my still be here.

This is a great book for middle schoolers. I am reading it with my child. Great imagery. Excellent book to teach figurative language and a fun read. My child asks for our reading time together. If you start reading early with your child, they never get to old for it. He loves, even at 12, for you read a chapter, I read a chapter every night time. This has led to some deep conversations and has increased his ability to read dramatically and fluently. I encourage all parents to do this. One way or another, this is a great book for 5-7 graders.

Meg and her little brother, Charles, wonder what happened to their father, a scientist working for the government who has been missing for several years. When a strange old lady shows up at their door, the adventure to find him begins. The old lady and two more of her odd friends lead them out of the universe into the worlds of some strange planets that are under the influence of the horrible, shadowy IT.A Wrinkle in Time is both a sci-fi story and a coming of age story. Meg, an awkward and insecure girl finds the courage and resourcefulness to overcome IT and save her father and brother. She also learns about the importance of family and love. While the character growth of Meg is nice, at times it seems a little contrived. One minute she's on the brink of death under the grip of IT, and the next, she's ready to face IT because she knows that it's something only she can do. It's also not very clear why little Charles, who has the vocabulary of a Harvard graduate, is so special. Some of the characters could have benefited from more development. Throughout the story there are references to Christianity: quotes from scripture, mention of guardian angels, and the idea that God is in charge of everything. This gives the story a "Chronicles of Narnia" kind of feel.Overall, the story is very good, and one that would appeal to middle grade readers who enjoy sci-fi/fantasy books.

I was reading this at night as I recovered from total knee joint replacement surgery. The reason I bought the book was because I want to see the movie when it's available. When I started reading it, I really didn't know what to expect, but I stuck with it to the very end, because the story line and characters were very intriguing. Now I'm even more curious to see how the movie version of it turned out, which usually doesn't turn out as well. However, the premis of the book and how it all came together in the end was delightful. This is one I'm keeping on my shelf for a later re-read.

There are no words for a sublime emotional experience. Suffice it to say that I am so grateful to have been allowed enough time on the planet to do a reread of a childhood favorite from at least a 50 year life time ago perspective. The book instantly connected me to the girl I was and gave me an understanding of why science fiction became my most favorite comfort read for so far all of my life. A Wrinle in Time was my first ever trip into this genre , and what a fantastic trip it was!
