Once again, Bhikkhu Bodhi has proven himself to be one of the most helpful Buddhist writers today. I bought a copy of the Majjhima Nikaya (The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha) and although it is an excellent translation, I found it quite inaccessible. This is the problem with the Pali Canon for people who aren't high caliber Buddhist scholars. You could read that book from cover to cover, but because there is so little organization and structure it's difficult to understand Buddhism as a unified whole - you just get pieces of it in the suttas without understanding how it all fits together in a comprehensible framework. Fortunately, Bhikkhu Bodhi understood this problem and found a solution: In the Buddha's Words. Basically, he arranged sections of the Pali Canon into a format that explains everything in an organized way. It's a thorough explanation of Buddhist teachings that, because they're directly quoted from the Pali Canon, are in the Buddha's own words. For example, one of the ten main chapters was The Way to a Fortunate Rebirth, so he took sections from the Pali Canon that explain this topic in detail. I would, however, highly recommend that you already be familiar with the basics of Buddhism before reading this book. Excellent Book.
I have the other translations of the Nikayas, but continue to return to this anthology because it contains all the dhamma that is needed for practice. When I first came to Buddhism, I thought that by reading hundreds of suttas, I would be closer to understanding and attainment. I spent much time reading the nikaya collections, and should not have done that.Once I began to practice more, and learn from monastics, I realized that maybe there is such a thing as too much sutta study. The Buddha did not recommend studying our way to enlightenment, as if this was a college degree. That's why it's great that BB has made this anthology in such a way that it captures everything of major importance from the suttas and we don't need to spend all of our time reading the nikayas to piece things together. He has done that for us here.I recommend reading this anthology, then go find a monastic to help you with practice rather than continuing on to read the bigger collections in this series.
This is the best book I've come across for efficiently getting to the actual teachings of the Buddha. If you want to know what he was saying, not what other people thought he was saying, then this is your book.Unfortunately a lot of literature on Buddhism has more in common with new age affirmation cards than the original analysis of the human condition. After 2,500 years of Chinese whispers its very hard for the earnest reader to cut through the chatter. This book cuts to the sources, with a sincere translation, but without any overlay of uninvited opinion. To understand why this book is so useful one needs to realise that the only alternative way to get to the original material is to read the Pali Cannon (from which this anthology is drawn) which is 4 thick volumes of his original lectures. Imagine an incredibly popular university lecturer died, and his students didn't want his teachings to be lost. Imagine that they collected every single lecture the teacher had given - even if it was the same lecture series given every year. Well that's the Pali Cannon. Its extremely repetitious and so takes a months to get through. Now imagine some sensible student comes along and says, lets take the best lectures for each of the topics they taught and put them into a single volume. In this way the reader, especially a new student, can cover all the key teachings efficiently and skip repetition. Well thats exactly what Bikkhu Bodhi has done.In 20 years of reading Buddhist literature I can say without hesitation that if you were to read one book to understand the actual Buddha's teachings, then make it this one. Indeed, aside from the Pali cannon, I cannot suggest another book that would ensure that a person could read and properly claim to have informed themselves about the Buddha's teachings.
This is a very fine anthology of suttas and Bhikkhu Bodhi's commentary is very lucid and easy to read. In fact I found the suttas themselves very enjoyable to read. I read the book pretty quickly, in about two weeks, but I will go back through it more carefully next time. I like the way the suttas are organized under catagories like The Human Condition, The Bringer of Light, Approaching the Dhamma, The Happiness Visible in the Present Life, The Way to a Fortunate Rebirth, The Planes of Realization and so forth. I was also glad to find out that celibacy is not a requirement for either stream-enterers or once-returners. Not until one realizes the fruit of non-returner is the craving for sensual desires completely abandoned. I don't know about others but I'm not really ready to give up sensual desires at this point but I do love meditation and studying the Buddha-Dhamma. It seems to me that nibbana is not something one is able to attain in one lifetime anyway and stream-entry is a very worthy goal. This book gives a very clear description of the process of rebirth and the actions that lead to rebirths in the different realms. I think it is important to go back to the authentic teachings of the historical Buddha and this is a good introduction. It also makes it very clear that the Buddha would not approve of the recent developments of secular/agnostic/materialist Buddhism which embrace a philosophy of nihilism. Clearly kamma and rebirth are central to authentic Buddhist teachings. After reading this I've ordered a copy of the Majjhima Nikaya translated by Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikku Bodhi.
