Several of the other reviewers say there are "many blank pages" in this book. That's wrong. There are MOSTLY blank pages. Only ONE THIRD of the book has actual content: various styles of hand lettering. And not so much instructional, "how-to" content. The rest of the book (the MAJORITY of this "book" is lined pages, graph paper, and even some old school cursive writing paper.Even though I bought a used copy (in very good condition) I still felt a bit ripped-off, lied to ...in as much as I thought I was buying 190 pages of "Hand Lettering."Should have paid more attention to the word "Ledger" in the title. To bad. The publisher was on their way to created a good book, but stop 30% into the job.
I wanted more entire sample alphabets and less practice pages. This book popped up quite often as a recommended reading for me based on my previous purchases and reads. Amazon was gracious enough to allow me to return the book. There was some good information, but it was mostly examples and I would have liked to see all of the letters drawn out in each style of lettering. I didn't check reviews and bought spontaneously; oops! I loved The Art of Whimsical Lettering by Joanne Sharpe; now that was what I was looking for! Also, Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering, by Lisa Engellbrecht was a great book on the topic.
I didn't bother reading any reviews before I impulse-ordered this book (it was recommended after adding the "Little Book of Lettering" to my cart). So I was DEFINITELY surprised to find out that the majority of this book is blank "practice" pages - all of those reviews are right-on.Pros:The book itself looks nice, so even if it just sits on your shelf or coffee table, at least it looks good doing it.A variety of styles and lettering options for inspirationCons:Not much in the way of step-by-step instructions. It gives you good ideas, but doesn't really show you how to accomplish it on your own, especially as a beginner. So the "practical" part is lackingThe majority (seriously.... more than 50%) of the book is just blank practice pages. Uh... I'm not going to mar this nice little book with my sad attempts at recreating the lettering.
The first third of the book is really good. Unfortunately, the other two-thirds are a joke. I wonder if I would have felt so let down had the book been 63 pages to begin with?As a professional designer/illustrator experimenting with hand-lettering, there is some great inspiration here. The book gives simple tips and tricks to help from sketching to final. Coming from an artistic background, I found it very easy to understand, with a decent assortment of examples and process techniques. Nothing revolutionary, just a short at-a-glance inspiration guide for when you're stuck or experimenting with type. It's not an in-depth guide by any means, and if you need that sort of thing look elsewhere.I would have been ecstatic and felt so much more value if it was filled with more examples, and no sketching pages. If the author released a similar book fleshed out with more examples, or cut the crap and released a cheaper first part, I would happily buy it and recommend it other creatives. In it's current state, it is just too odd to justify the price.
I searched for a book like this which has simple tips to follow to practice on hand-lettering. I have known the author through her online courses in one of the online skill sharing sites. She's really, really good. The hand-drawn lettering looks simple but when you actually do them, they are more than just hand-letterings! They are letters drawn with gusto and stories to tell.These book is not very thick. It has 192 pages BUT it is not a full book on tips and how-tos. It has plenty of pages that are either lined, or graphed so that you can practice on your hand lettering.So, if you want a book that is full of how-tos from front to back then this book is not for you. However, if you just want to brush up on your lettering, pick up some tips on the author's styles then this is a good book to have.
This book is 80% blank practice pages that are mainly graph paper and dot paper. While the information about the anatomy of a font is very useful this book doesn't actually teach you how to create any of these "drawn" letters. It gives examples and assumes you know the basics. I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner, such as myself.
I wanted to love this book. As I read more and more, the greater my disappointment. It's great if you're looking for a really expensive glossy paper practice sheet. This is of course assuming that you learned how to do it elsewhere. It is most definitely a ledger, but most certainly not a guide. It's basically a glossary of different styles of lettering with practice space. I'd keep looking if you're actually interested in learning how to hand letter.
Even though people are complaining about the "blank pages" (which were actually peppered with great ideas at the bottom), the content and idea quality of this book are awesome! It's the one book I grab when I'm leaving the house for a trip (along with my sketch book). It has lots of ideas ranging from simple to complex. It was only $13, so I wasn't too mad about the blank pages. I took a Skillshare class from the author. Got lots of great ideas. This book is a fabulous resource for hand lettering artists! (NOTE TO AUTHOR: Don't let the bum reviews get you down. I know how much creative effort goes into lettering--the nay sayers might not understand the process. Love your work!)
