The Viz's "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind Box Set" is just about perfect and everything that a manga edition should aspire to be. I've decided to upload a series of photos so you can appreciate for yourself what a treat this edition is. The package consists of 2 large hardcovers books inside a beutiful and strong slipcase, including a small color poster. Nausicaä was previously published in 7 softcover volumes and is now collected in full in this 2 HC books. So for all of that, the $60 price tag (much less with Amazon discount), is an unbeatable value.Both story and art is by Hayao Miyazaki, that's right, HAYAO MIYAZAKI: the man who co-founded the internationally acclaimed Studio Ghibli, one of the greatest genius of animation this world have ever seen. The art is simply amazing, the storytelling is brilliant, the pages are full of life and detail and magic.* * * * * These are the highlights of the edition * * * * *- The format is over-sized (like Akira's volumes), with a trim-size much larger than the one we are used to for mangas: the books are 10,4 by 7,3 inches. This gives you a much better appreciation of the art, and that's exactly what you want, being Miyazaki's pages so full of detail and wonder.- Book I is 568 pages long and Book II is 552 pages long, adding up to 1120 pages worth of Miyazaki's art!- Both books are hardcovers with sewn-binding, which allows for a very comfortable reading experience. It's a real pleasure to be able to enjoy a manga in HC format, as opossed as softcovers, it feels like a real luxury.- The printing quality is excellent, with sharp line-art and a delicate sepia tone ink.- The paper quality is beautiful and very apt for the reproduction of art. The paper stock is NOT glossy; it's traditional manga paper stock, but it isn't flimsy or cheap at all. It's really nice and proper for the edition.- Each volume includes 8 pages in color at the beginning of the book. This pages are printed in glossy paper stock and the art reproduction is beautiful, with vivid colors and outstanding detail.- The slipcase is very solid and well-build, and the books fit perfectly inside of it.- The box set also includes a small two-sided color poster (16,5 x 11,7 inches), which is a very nice adition to the package.- The reading order is from right to left, respecting the original page layout.In conclusion, the Nausicaä deluxe box set is the best edition of a manga I've ever seen. I really hope Viz and other publishers release critically acclaimed titles like Akira or Vagabond in deluxe editions just like this one.
Just got this delivered, and I am very pleased indeed. I have had the "Americanized" video DVD for years and enjoyed it. Just recently got the Disney version, with original names used. This inspired me to research this manga. The price for this book set is a steal! I couldn't believe the weight of the two volume set til I opened it. I have a few "adult comics", but nothing like this with two heavy thick hard bound books. These are true library quality, and great collectibles. The format, reading from back of the book to the front, initially threw me, til I noticed the page numbers. Not a bad thing, but different for us Americans. It is also interesting seeing the differences in scenes and story content between this original manga and the later videos.This has gotten me interested in trying other mangas too.Edit to add:I am halfway into the second volume now. Wow! So much more to the story than the videos present. This is truly epic. I'd like to see a miniseries video done, following this two-volume book. I appreciate certain characters now, who were glossed over or mischaracterised in the video. The messages Miyazaki included regarding war and ecology/environment really come through too. I am a Conservative exmilitary and no "tree hugger", but do appreciate his concerns.
I can not believe how much I enjoyed reading this. Now to be completely honest, I a major Hayao Miyazaki fan, I have watched every single one of his movies, and I loved every single one (and I don't give a darn that the world knows it lol). I could, and literally have on occasion, watch movies like Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Howls Moving Castle 2 or three times in the same week. Having made how clear I am a Hayao Miyazaki fanboy I would have to say HOWEVER, after reading this, I would give up ALL of his movies if he had instead adapted them into manga (NOTE: He actually is still working on Mangas, and has quite a few other than Nausicaa). Which is what I assume he might have done if his movies had not caught on.Funny thing about me, I always halfheartedly wished Miyazaki would make sequels to his movies, because I always was felt wanting even more from his movies, even though I thought every one ended well. The series on the other hand was an enormous expansion on the Nausicaa Universe. It went far beyond and SPOILER ALERT took the story in a very captivating path of events that differed slightly from the movie. I would 1000% percent say that this read is requirement for anyone who loves the narratives and art of Hayao Miyazaki even if you hate reading. After reading it I was depressed that they had not used this full narrative and made three feature films for Nausicaa, but I digress lol.As for anyone who is new to the works of Hayao Miyazaki (btw shame on you for not knowing the animator of an era, I bet you might know more about the size of Kim Kardashians rear end than him, just kidding, if you read this far you are probably more cultured than I am :) ) this is a wonderful manga series to get sunk into for a week or two. The setting is a far future, imagine a mad max kind of world, but more feudal. Mankind is on the fringe of surviving a toxic forest that is protected by immense insects who seem to want nothing more than to destroy mankind. I am a huge sci fi reader, and I love Warhammer 40K lore, so in the sense of man trying to reclaim its once powerful technological glory, these two have some similarities. It has a bit of hinted romantic qualities, but is less driven by that than by the strong characters and their development throughout the manga. It also has giant genetically engineered birds that are used as horses, so pretty much as cool as it gets. Also fairly graphic in terms of gore, and has a lot of scenes that apparently can make a grown man tear.Also the poster this comes with kicks butt, I honestly am trying to find a two sided frame to put it in (I don't know if those exist)
