I am a clinician working with adolescents. I have "Where Should I Sit at Lunch" prominently displayed in my offices (and my own home). Numerous patients have picked up the book and asked to borrow it. They have come back saying the book was very helpful and made them feel more comfortable about their worries. As one 14 year old said.. "it's so nice to see that other people feel the same way".A 16 year old boy said "it's better than my therapy, the book gave me good suggestions on how to handle feeling shy and left out. And you don't have to bother reading stuff you don't want to, just go to the part that interests you." I feel that the Author's are empathic, practical and have put together a book that is readable and believable. THey clearly know teenagers and their struggles. The book is especially user friendly to pre-teens and teens. It is definitely a book that every parent should buy and leave lying around the house. It is truly a '24/7 guide to Surviving the High School Years".

I thought this book was right on. It definitely helps. High school is such a hard time now, and most parents don't understand that. They always say that they understand because they were there, but honestly their experience is different because each individual's experience is different. All the topics in the book are exactly what high school teens are thinking about. Sorry parents, but it is the truth and it's good to have a guide that actually hits the true points of high school and not the ideal points. There is so much peer pressure that sometimes we make the wrong decisions, but with something like this guide to fall back on then there is not as much to worry about. Also, most guides are geared towards girls, but they are not the only ones with problems. So having parts about the troubles that guys have makes it that much better.

I bought this book for my 14 year old son so that he could begin to understand some of the things that go on in high school so that he could read about real experiences instead of my outdated memories. This book gives insight into everything he could need help with like school, friends, body image, relationships, dealing with family, and more. In particular the first hand quotes from actual high school students showed him that there are a range of things that he could encounter in the next four years, and it would be perfectly normal. He has taken away a new comprehension of what goes on in grades 9-12 besides classes which has made him much more comfortable with the transition that will take place at the beginning of this school year.

I bought this book for my 14 year old daughter, thinking that it might give her some insights for today's high school experience. I was expecting a book that dealt with making and keeping new friends, study habits, organization, balancing schoolwork and homelife, etc.What we got was a book that talks about on-line dating, whether or not oral sex is considered sex, 10 questions to ask yourself before having sex, tattoos, genital piercing, and talking back to teachers. The book seems like a compilation of crap from magazines like GL or J-14. They barely give any insights on how to survive high school. The title was very misleading.

Forget the title. Like “listicles”, it seems that publishers believe that every sexuality book has to market itself this way or die. This book doesn’t teach about how to have “ridiculously good sex”. It’s not actually a how-to book, it’s a how-to-understand book—which is probably a better idea. Snyder takes his many years of experience working with couples and shares some very helpful ideas. I found many gems in this book, and I can recommend it as a good read that may be instrumental for many who struggle with repetitive sexual problems in their relationship or relationships.First, it must be noted (as the author himself states) that Snyder works mostly with cisgender, heterosexual couples, so even though there are one or two examples of queer couples in his book, it is largely a straight, cis lens. Having said this, many of his insights are intra-psychic as well as interpersonal, and as such, may be relatable across the queer-straight divide. Also of note is that Snyder is religious, and this comes through in his quotes as well as his values. For what it’s worth, I found him unpreachy, and I appreciated that the author reveals his faith early so that the reader can decide what may and may not be relevant to them. He also uses language and concepts that are relatable to many different expressions of spirituality.Now for the gems. I found many. Snyder has been in practice a long time—over 30 years. He has learned a lot, and passes it on to his readers. He begins by talking about the sexual self as well as sexual feelings, and how to care for them. He lays out some key pieces of the psychological end of arousal. He speaks of the sexual self—an interpretation of Avodah Offit’s work--as a less-than verbal, simple (but not easy) part of ourselves. Within this insight come many:• “If it feels like work, don’t do it. Sex should never feel like work, as you know.”• “You don’t have to return your partner to a state of quiescence every time they get excited.”• “It’s absolutely crucial that when you go looking for (erotic inspiration), that you first look within yourself.”If you’re reading this and find yourself critical of these insights, or if they seem simplistic, I encourage you to read them within the context of the book, where they make more sense and are placed in a much deeper frame of reference. I can’t do the richness of Snyder’s writing and thinking justice in this brief review.Snyder also discusses the deterioration of the Sensate Focus method to the point where it is now practiced in the opposite manner it was intended, due to decades of poor communication of the concept. He calls for a return to the original method, which made this sexologist take note to research this in greater depth.The author sets up a lot of great models for his couples: The Two-Step, the Simmer, arousal models. He also discusses what he calls “Sex Knots”—common conundrums couples become engaged in, and offers some simple fixes to try at the book’s end.He also has a great sense of humor. One of my favorite lines from the first chapter, “There are better ways of handling a ‘no.’ They all involve first resolving not to freak out.’” He calls a section on scent, “Of Sweaty T-Shirts and the Tops of Baby’s Heads.” It’s a fun read.But it’s also a deep read, because in the end, Snyder is prescribing a return not to sex per se, but to erotic life. He’s prescribing mindfulness, attention, playfulness, spirit, intimacy and joy, all in the not unreasonable hope that in becoming more erotically alive, the reader can also become more sexually alive.It’s not a “how-to” book. It’s a “why” and a “what” book. As such, it may actually live up to its title.

Dr. Snyder's book offers wise advice for couples that seek to repair or just nurture their sexual intimacy. His approach is fundamentally different than any other "sex" book you have ever read. Sex books typically focus entirely on sex, with little attention to relationship or heart-to-heart intimacy. Relationship books are at the other extreme - focusing on relationship with little focus on sex. Dr. Snyder finds the midpoint - focusing on practical ways to build or nurture intimacy, in ways that will likely lead to desire and arousal, and so set the stage for joyful and fulfilling sex.The fundamental idea here is that sex is about feelings - primarily your own feelings. And, that it is healthy to listen to and understand those feelings. By doing so, you set the stage for lasting, joyful and fulfilling sexual intimacy with your beloved.I got to the end wishing there was more, and also feeling just a bit like "Is that all?" The ideas are so simple, and much of the book is repetitive as he focuses on about three or four simple ideas and uses a variety of stories to illustrate how these ideas could play out in real life. Snyder is a great story-teller, and the stories illustrate how you would put his ideas into action, and how to work change in your relationship.One example to give you a flavor of the approach of the book - something Dr. Snyder calls "simmering." Dr. Snyder suggests that over the years, couples lose the idea that small moments of low level arousal are a good thing. Foe example, the wife may think that arousing her husband without moving forward to sex is cruel, that if he gets aroused that she has an obligation to provide sexual release. Dr. Snyder calls B.S. on this, and encourages couples to enjoy moments of intentional arousal as an activity to be enjoyed for its own sake, and without any expectation or pressure for anything else. So, before heading out the door in the morning, have a full body hug, wrap your arms around each other, kiss deeply, inhale each other's scent and look deeply into your spouse's eyes. This is a two minute recharge to your relationship. Something you can do even when sex is not immediately in the cards, even when one spouse is absolutely, definitely not up for sex. Simply enjoy the "charge" of being aroused by your spouse. Reading about simmering in his book lead to one of those "Aha!" kind of moments, where you recognize something you sort of almost (but not quite) understood, but could never quite put into words.I read this through quickly - always thinking "OK, this guy is definitely on to something." Now, I'll go back and re-read slowly and thoughtfully. Thinking carefully about how to put these ideas into action so that I can nurture the kind of intimacy I want in my own marriage.I've been married for a long time. Our relationship is solid and loving. But, long term relationships are not easy. You have to be intentional about nurturing your love for each other. Dr. Snyder's ideas are simple, but solid. This is a book that really speaks to me.

"The Rules of Desire are Rules of the Heart." What a beautiful opening to chapter 1. Be prepared to be surprised (Great sex isn't necessarily about what you think it is) and delighted. Dr. Stephen Snyder is a wise, loving and witty guide for navigating the waters of this most essential topic. Every couple should read this book and there's be a lot more great sex--and a lot more happiness--out there. Thank you, Dr. Snyder. I am so enjoying this book and recommending it to all my friends. I recommend it to you, as well!

I have followed Dr. Snyder's blogs and other on line articles. He has an intelligent, creative, knowledgeable approach to discussion of sex and relationships. He makes this subject matter natural(no feeling of right or wrong) he writes in an easy, accessible manner..as though you are having a non judgemental discussion with a very insightful friend..throw in a dash of humor and you have a book like none other. No" how to" list or complicated preparations. Just be there and open to feel a kind of closeness and delight like no other guide. I read this quickly because it is engaging..even went back to parts to re-enjoy Dr. Snyder's style, antidotes. This book is never a boring, how to guide. It is so on point and so touching in discovering the wonders of true love of self and ur other. This is for everyone and i am sure you will not feel the same about urself, your partner and what is possible in your most intimate realms. I will be reading it again as I gain new insights with each sit down with "Love Worth Making". Dr. Snyder is special and this book is a reflection of that specialness.

I never write reviews, mostly because if I am reading a good book usually people don't need me to tell them the book is a classic, if the book is bad or just a book layover until something better comes along, why write a review? What should I say? Predictable and so so, if you have a couple of hours to kill...read this.Papillion had me entranced, I can't explain in words the emotions I felt while reading Henri's story. The amount of detail and emotions he poured into his story literally makes you feel as if you're there, surviving, escaping, crying, loving, and living. I would recommend this story to anyone.

Sold 4 million copies in France in 4 years from being published in 1969. Was translated into dozens of languages and it inspired a major Hollywood movie, with Dustin Hoffman and I believe Steve McQueen, which was a dud. There are nay-sayers that say he made it all up, but they offer no evidence. There are other books about French penal colonies in South America in the 1930s and 40s, which corroborate his account. Also his publisher and friends testified that the story is true and he wrote it in Venezuela in his 60s. It's very good writing, a very cool story. I love the audio book narration.

I see reviews here of people who give 1 star because they don't believe the story was true. Key word "story". Whether or not this story is actually true does not deter from the fact that the book is extremely entertaining and well written. Take it for what it's worth and enjoy the ride....like other people's stories aren't embellished as well :) Afterwards I saw the movie with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. A fun movie but I preferred the book.Enjoy this classic.

Had seen the movie previously to reading the book. Both are great, but, as usual, the book gives so much more insight to the story. The feeling you get from the pages really inspire, disturb, and infect you with the feeling of what life was like in the French penal colony of Devil's Island.

Great book if you're super gullible. I read the first 115 pages and decided to stop reading. Sure I considered reading it as fiction, but knowing it was told as fact just made me madder.This book is full of tall tales and embellishments. Sure, he probably escaped, and that's probably the thin strand of truth in this plot of embellishments and tall tales. It's like listening to President Trump. You know there is a strand of truth there, but the embellishing and bragging and fact bending really obstructs any truth you are trying to find.

As somebody with attention deficit issues it should say something that this book, though not terribly fast paced, held my attention captive until the end. This is by far one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading. I personally hold the author in high regard due to his views on personal liberty and how necessary it is to fight unrelentingly against any organization or government that may seek to impede upon it.

This memoir, quasi-autobiographical fiction or whatever one wants to dub it, is, as almost all the reviewers here attest, a gripping narrative of the human condition and source of strength and hope for anyone, especially anyone undergoing the trials and tribulations of man's inhumanity to man.True, Charrière more often than not comes across as a bit of an incarcerated flâneur with a sort of noblesse oblige toward everyone involved, from fellow prisoners to guards, wardens, administrators, the lot. But he has a sense of humour about his own hyperbolic amour-propre which makes it endurable. At one point, faced with a dilemma in this moral code of his, he writes:"I smiled at the prospect of having to search out an evil policeman with no family. How should I put it to him:'If I kill you, are you sure no one will miss you?'"Very droll, Papi.All this aside, what marks this book out from other books of the sort is the detailed descriptions of the torrid conditions of the tropic zone where our hero spends his sentence. They are utterly convincing, and if there's one thing to which everyone agrees it's that, guilty or not, Henri Charrière did spend much of his life on penal colonies such as the Île-Royale, described thus:"The noon sun was leaden-a tropical sun to boil the brain in your skull; a sun that shrivelled the plants not yet grown strong enough to resist it; a sun that, in a few hours, dried up all but the deepest salt-water pools, leaving only a white film of salt; a sun that set the air to dancing-it literally moved before my eyes-its reflection on the water burning my pupils."In his second stay in solitary confinement, he pens - perhaps a bit too overtly - a passage worthy of France's greatest writer, who famously confined himself to a cork-lined closet during much of his latter years:"Such sharp recollections of moments and events fifteen years in the past, and the ability to relive them so intensely, can only be accomplished in a cell where you're cut off from all noise, in the most absolute silence. I can even see the yellow of Aunt Outine's dress. I could hear the wind in the chestnut trees, the dry noise a chestnut makes as it falls on the ground, or its soft thump when it hits a pile of leaves...And there was no one to stop me from rolling around in these memories and drinking in the peace so necessary to my battered soul."Despite the nod Proust-wards here, there can be no doubt in the reader's mind after finishing the book, despite questions about specifics, that the writer has indeed been battered in soul and in body and seen the very best and the very worst of which humans are capable, and that the reader, vicariously, has done so as well.As Papillon says about the halfway fictitious explanation of an incident concocted, in order to save their skins and positions, by both guards and prisoners for the administration on one of the colonies:"It has since remained part legend, part true story."So with "Papillon" and his harrowing tale of hope amidst the darkest adversity.

Wow what a story of hardship, survival and a test of the human spirit. Whilst there is conjecture as to the honesty of Papillion story it is still a great read. One I couldn’t put down. The cinematic portraits of Papillon do not do justice to what it must have actually been like. At times I was in despair for Papillon and at others angry with him. This was the roller coaster ride of this book. A must read.

They were merely appliances. And then came the new Bow Tie offerings for 1955, which were styling knockouts, especially the beautiful Cameo, slab-side models. As a result, although the pickups of the mid-’50s and early ’60s were still working vehicles, people began driving them to town and to church on Sunday as well. Thanks to their handsome new looks, pickup trucks became acceptable as daily transportation. And that’s a trend that still exists today.Big back windows, two-tone paint schemes, stainless trim, as well as deluxe interiors were available for those who wanted them, as were outstanding innovative 265 cubic-inch V-8 engines and automatic transmissions. But underneath the new bodywork was essentially the same simple workhorse Chevrolet pickup for which the company had become famous. Yes, the closed driveline was dumped for a more modern open driveshaft system, and the 216 six-cylinder engine with its splash lubrication and cast-iron pistons was jettisoned for the more modern 235 inline-6 with full pressure lubrication and aluminum pistons. But the chassis remained nearly identical.Today, classic (’55-’60) Chevy trucks are still plentiful because of their nearly invincible ruggedness and simplicity and the fact that replacement parts are still cheap for them. In fact, nearly everything is available for them for a lot less than what parts for new trucks would set you back. As an example, a new fuel pump for a classic Chevy truck goes for just $45. Try finding one for your modern truck for that price. And a professionally overhauled small-block V-8 can be had for as little as $500. Also, you can rebuild your truck’s entire steering system for under $200. In fact, I would guess that you could restore a tired classic Chevy truck for less than you could buy a contemporary pickup!And if you did, you would have a vehicle that would continue to increase in value rather than be worth less and less as the years go by. After all, the ’50s-era second series Chevy trucks have already stood the test of time. And they are still fairly common and inexpensive to buy unless you just have to own a rare Cameo with all the accessories, or want a fully tricked-out show truck all ready to go.Of course, there are those who will tell you that the old trucks don’t go as fast as modern ones, and they would be right, but that is easily remedied. In fact, just about any engine you can imagine will fit under the hood of a classic Bow Tie pickup with room to spare. And transmissions—both automatic and standard, four, five or even six speeds—are also available. We’ll tell you how to install my favorite, the Mopar New Process A833 four-speed with overdrive."Yeah but they don’t stop very well either," you say? Note bypass oil filter on top unique to that year.You can put any engine you like in your classic truck. There is even room for a huge Chrysler Hemi or one of those 500 cubic-inch Cadillac motors if you so desire. On the other hand, these days, with fuel prices being as high as they are, most of us would prefer to stay with one of Chevrolet’s small-block engines. Any of them will bolt in, you can tune them to make 600 horsepower or more if that’s what you want, and everything in the way of replacement parts and speed components is readily available for them at nominal prices.That’s because the Chevy small-block is quite possibly the best American automotive engine design ever. It is over fifty years old and still being produced, albeit in modified form. And it has been put into everything from VW Beetles and vintage Willys coupes to Jaguars and even Fords because it is light, powerful, dependable and inexpensive to super-tune.And if you are one of these guys who believe that there is no substitute for cubic inches, you can always install the 400 cubic-inch version that is the big daddy of all small-blocks. However, even the little 265 that Chevy debuted in 1955 can be made to perform pretty well with a little tweaking, and the 283 that first appeared in the 1957 models is an old favorite with hot rodders that has no real shortcomings either, except perhaps its small displacement.Of course, many of our trucks came with Chevy’s venerable 235 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine, which is an excellent powerplant as well, but if you have a classic pickup that was V-8 powered from the factory, it will most likely be one of the first two engines listed below. Also, if you want to swap a six for a V-8 it’s pretty easy, but you will need to change out the bellhousing for one that is designed to accommodate a V-8, and you will have to move the radiator back behind its cradle.Chevy has built its small-block engines in a number of different displacements over the years and with a couple of exceptions, they are all great motors, even in their stock form. And any of them can be built to produce truly impressive power with a little effort and a few bolt-on parts. Problem is, they all look pretty much alike, and you will want to know which engine you are working on. So before we get into tuning, let’s review the possibilities:All of the Chevrolet small-block V-8s were painted Chevy orange, with a couple of exceptions. In 1956, for that year only, the V-8 engine was ruby red. And then in 1957, though the 283 was offered for the first time that year, the 265 was still available in trucks. There are a couple practices in the book that are wrong, such as installing a rear seal on a chevy straight six, and the book is a little dated at this point (there are better ways of doing some things now), but it still has some valuable pics and info.

I like the book, however it is dated. There are many upgrades available for these trucks now that are not in the book. I own a 1955 Chevy 2nd series with many upgrades a few that are in this book. I didn't find it useful for anything new.

Very good book. I like that he speaks from a lot of experience. There's a good mix of expensive fixes (that I could never afford) and practical, cheap ones. This book is definitely focused on task force Chevys, although I bet it could apply to other years as well. I also bought "how to restore your Chevrolet pickup" and I like this one better.

purchase this for my father as he is re-vuilding his 56 now. This book is perfect because this talks him though a lot of different customizing scenarios. I.e. Using different rear ends etc etc.great idea for a birthday / holiday present

It's got some good information and fairly detailed, only problem I see is it's a little out of date esp with the numder of accessories and parts that areavailable now.

This is a good book for someone with no restoration experience in a very specific area. It wasn't able to help me in many areas as I am to far into my restoration project (I had already done everything he talked about in the book).

You feel her growing pains as you read the book and feel like you are part of her life.This book also sheds light on the availability of a new invention, electricity. You learn how different the Bayou life is than the city life in the North.
