He was posted in Abyei, an oil-rich region set squarely on the demarcation between north and south Sudan, where one of the bloodiest civil wars in Africa had recently ended. In a makeshift hospital, he saw dozens of sick people, most suffering—even dying—from treatable illnesses. In his six months of service, Maskalyk oversaw a measles outbreak and treated tuberculosis patients, mothers fatally injured during childbirth and countless malnourished children. Even if Maskalyk frustrates in his apolitical stance, refusing to ask why so many are suffering and merely lamenting the fact, he provides a raw and deeply felt account of his time in Sudan. I read Six Months in Sudan before South Sudan became a separate nation and the ensuing devastation that has engulfed it since. Reading this book opened my eyes into the cultural problems that faces the medical professionals who work with Doctors Without Borders. Even in the calmer setting of this book, working in an alien culture, particularly that of the third world, presents its own problems when trying to interface with the people and belief system of that culture. Maskalyk has great empathy for his Sudanese patients and goes out of his way to try to understand them. It's a good read and gives insight into the problems facing anyone working in South Sudan.

What admiration I have for these doc. If we only had more people like this, all over the world. One person can make a tremendous difference. And what a little amount of money it would cost to wipe out some of these diseases.

This book took me on a daily basis to somewhere I could never visit, facing hardships and losses that would overwhelm me. But, he did so in an honest way that forced me ,in my comfortable existence, to face and embrace the daily struggles of those in Sudan.Dr. James and his team, and some Sudanese patients felt like friends by the end of the book.

I enjoyed this story very much. Six Months in South Sudan is a tell-all account of what it is like to live and work in a humanitarian emergency. I found the book very riveting - I actually left it on a plane (ironically, on my way back from South Sudan) and re-bought the kindle version so I could finish it because I could not be left wondering how it would end! As a somewhat new aid worker myself, I could relate to this book and the situation, however I found it very informative about life in the field (providing an often sobering view of what it is really like) and the Abyei region and took with it many lessons that I myself can take to the field - as well as information about the South Sudan in general. Many thanks to Dr. Maskalyk for writing such a wonderful book!

Book in pristine condition. Written by Canadian volunteer with of his experiences as a doctor with Médecins san Frontières in Darfur. He gave a very engaging interview on CBC radio so purchased book for niece who has volunteered with NGO in Sudan.

Great personable read. Dr. Maskalyk reminds us that there is only one world (the world in Abyei and wherever you are is the same world).

The book is ok in covering PMBOK knowledge area however not even close to what I have experienced on the exam. Exam questions are situational situational situational I only used my calculator formula may be once. I will definitely look somewhere else if I want to get more situational questions and less theoretical questions...the exam was way tougher. Good luck

I took the practice exams in blocks of 10 questions so I could look back and figure out why I missed them AND also calculate my scores so I would know when I was getting near a success rate that would enable me to pass the exam. My target eventually became 80 - 90% on the Practice Exams so I could give myself a margin for error.When I read the book, I got bogged down because the PMBOK is a beast. I already understand Project Management. I do it every day. BUT when I took the practice exams and I missed a question, it directed me to a section of the book where I read the couple of pages before and after the answer to put context around the answer. The benefit: It FORCED me to different sections of the book.Since I was missing questions about certain practice areas, it identified my weaknesses so I could work on them. I also looked at some of the sections for answers I got right, but I focused on the areas for questions I got wrong.I passed the exam on my first attempt.That was my strategy. Good luck finding yours. I think this book can play an instrumental role in your success.One Final Tip: The day of the exam, study the formulas for the 30 minutes before going in to take the exam. About the Author

Marcello Massimini was trained as a Medical Doctor and received a PhD in Neurophysiology. He worked at Laval University (Canada), at the University of Wisconsin (USA), at the ComaScience Group, University of Liege (Belgium) and is currently Professor of Physiology at the University of Milan (Italy). In 2013, he received the James S. McDonnell Scholar Award. His research team investigates the mechanisms of loss and recovery of consciousness in different conditions such as wakefulness, sleep, dreaming, anaesthesia and coma. His current goal is to bring theoretical and basic neuroscience closer to the bedside of brain-injured patients.Giulio Tononi received his medical degree and specialized in Psychiatry at the University of Pisa, Italy. After serving as an Army medical officer, he obtained a Ph.D. in neuroscience as a fellow of the Scuola Superiore. He is currently Professor of Psychiatry, Distinguished Professor in Consciousness Science, the David P. White Chair in Sleep Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Sleep and Consciousness. In 2005 he received the NIH Director's Pioneer Award for his work on sleep. His laboratory studies consciousness and its disorders as well as the mechanisms and functions of sleep.

I would even recommend this for the relatively seasoned winter camper, as there are several tips which you may not have picked up even if you do get out in the cold frequently. I just finished reading this book a second time and picked up a few more tips that I hope to use this winter.I would also highly recommend An Illustrated Guide to Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue if you plan to do any glacier travel.

I bought this book because I wanted to get into BC skiing and have a lot of questions about the diffs of tele vs AT, use of skins etc...The book really doesnt offer much info on skiing. It does however have a lot of info on camping in winter conditions in an easy to read format with lots of pictures.So if you need info regarding camping in the snow this would probably be a good book for you, if your like me and looking for more info on types of systems when you would want one over the other etc.. you should probably pass on this book.

This is a must read for anyone looking to hone their 4th season backpacking skills; as an experienced winter backcountry traveler I grabbed this title to tickle my imagination - outdoor books help get me fired up - and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of useful strategies contained within that I immediately incorporated into my own routine. Clelland's illustrations are awesome as always (his "Ultralight Backpackin' Tips" and "Lighten Up" are 5 Star Reads as well), and don't be confused by the "backcountry ski" title: this is a fantastic resource for anyone who enjoys a challenging winter overnight by boot, snowshoe, snowboard or ski.

I'm assuming we will hear more about Boundary Witches. :) The problem with binge reading is that one is left tapping one's fingers on the table waiting for the next installment. Or re-reading. And these will end up in the re-read pile.These books are tightly written, exceptionally well edited, with a great combination of primary and secondary lines, good character development (I like that the good guys are never all good and the bad guys are never all bad - that's the mark of a good writer). good romantic conflicts (nice tension) without going overboard, a great mixture of paranormal beings and a different look at types of magic and witches.

Melissa F Olson is one of my favorite fantasy/paranormal writers. Her literary education shows in her writing.I have to admit that I prefer her Scarlet Bernard series, but I've come to enjoy the usual cast of characters in this series too.I really like the way they love and support each other. I admire Lex's loyalty to her family, friends, and employer, Mavis.In this book, which starts a bit slowly, Lex is visited by a guy who claimed to be her father.This happened at a time when the vampires in Denver and Boulder are being poisoned by belladonna. Mavis is stricken, inconpacitated and so Lex, Quinn, Simon and Lily have to work together to keep that secret and find out what's going on. Lex has been learning about her abilities as a boundary witch, getting lessons from Simon and Lily, but there are few boundary witches for her to learn from. Kristen, from Scarlet's books, made an appearance to help and support her.Overall this is a book about accepting yourself and growing into your capabilities, even if you find out your biological parent was not anything you would choose. Lex's sister Sam appeared in ghost form, as did her mother, a great way to help the story along.

These books never cease to amaze me. Somehow, we ended this trilogy where we did, but I have no idea how we got there. This author has the magical ability to take a hundred different ideas and make them work to a very simple conclusion. At any rate, I still enjoy Lex, which is more than I could say for Scarlett at the end of her trilogy, so I’m a pretty happy camper.Lex is still doing damage control in her life after she “outed” herself to her brother in law. We join her after he decided to take the rest of her family and his daughter to Disney on a vacation. She’s thrown herself into other things (training, her work, chopping up a really big supernatural worm), and is working on teaching Lily some combat moves when what appears to be a rabid animal crashes through her window.Here’s where this story begins – rabid animals? Obviously never that simple. There’s also someone poisoning vampires, a guy claiming to be her birth father shows up on her doorstep, and her usually solid witch friends appear to be having a rough time dealing with their previous family drama. Throw all those things into a blender, add some ghosts, crystals, and an incredible amount of physical damage (to Lex and property) and you’ve got the finale to this trilogy wrapped up.The mystery portion of the book, of course, was unpredictable. We don’t get enough information and Lex is trying to handle too many things at once, so when we finally reach the conclusion, I was left saying “huh.” I guess maybe there were signs? Not really, though. Lex freely admits to not being a real investigator, so we, by extension, are mostly left grasping at straws (like her). I wish we had a little bit more wrap up at the conclusion, which felt rushed and clunky. As I said, though, I still like Lex, so she gets a little more leeway in her confusing life choices. I hope that we swing back around to her at some point so we can maybe get some more answers.

I started out reading abt Scarlett and i think I'm reading these put of order or something but i absolutely adore Lex. Her story to me is more captivating. Nothing is perfect but i do think she is a well rounded heroine. She is flawed and relatable but also continues to grow in each book we read. It's been a while since I've found a kickass heroine to love. I like that the relationship w her and Quinn isn't rushed and that even with her 'powers' she is still vulnerable. She makes mistakes you can get behind.In this series Lex learns abt family. This was abt the past coming back to haunt. What's done in the dark always comes to light. Most of all Lex learns what it truly means to be here. Where she is from and what she can do. Great book and must read if you've read the others.

Boundary Born has been in my TBR pile for awhile. I'm always telling myself, 'Oh, it'll be the next book I read.' But something would always come up and it'd get pushed back again and again. Why? I have no idea, but I'm so mad at myself for taking so long to read it! The first two books in the series were awesome and Boundary Born was just as good-maybe even better than it's predecessors.Even though it had been awhile since I read the previous books, I had no trouble jumping right back in and remembering everything. I dived right into this book and read as fast as I could. It was super interesting learning about Lex's biological family and more about her boundary magic. The plot moved along quickly and there were quite a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Now that I've finished this series, I really need to go back and read the Scarlett Bernard series. I'd highly recommend this series to anyone who loves urban fantasy!

This book was used in the new colonies to teach young children. It was used to teach reading but has the foundational principles of the Gospel! I encourage everyone to read what children were being taught in school in the 1700's and even 1800's. I whole heartedly agree with many of the people who have also written a review, that stated that for any family that considers Christ to be the center of their home, this book is a MUST HAVE!!! To save you some money, a person can by the same New-England Primer in the blue hard back cover for much less than the maroon one on this page. I recommend to buy two at a time and pass one on to a friend, then tell the friend to do the same, in order to get the truth of our nation's Biblical history and knowledge out to the citizens as quickly as possible. I bought this for my Grandchildren. If schools are going to take God out then we will keep them learning God at Home.

Totally NOT what I expected ... it was BETTER! I was re-schooled by the reading of this tiny treasure! However, this book may prove to be difficult and challenging for the faint-hearted in more ways than one. At first I thought 'Oh, how cute! Conveniently pocket-sized!' ... then 'Uh, oh, the typography is hard to read ... ' to 'Wow! Major Education!' There are foundational principles and moral values PACKED in this tiny volume. I jealously guard this replica and I have ordered more updated, modern versions to share with as gifts.

All Christian families should have this little book, even though it is written in old English. Our children love it. It also reminds us of a time when few actually had schools to attend and were therefore self educated. It reminds us that life was not always easy as it is today and death was very present.

If you want to get a realization of where our education system once was and compare to where it is now, buy this book and see how for we have dropped!

I did not realize that it would be so small. The kids liked the idea of taking it out of our library when I introduced the book. It was just hard for them to read because of the small print. I did have to explain the differences in the letter formation (especially the 's')

This is a fantastic book - It should be left as the first grade reader like it was originally intended

I recently saw an exhibit of the entire collection of Audubon illustrations. That was the motivation to purchase this book. It is complete and printed on nice stock with excellent renditions of the illustrations. My only complaint is that some of the larger plates that are "landscape" are printed straddling the binding. It just ruins the illustration. The drawings that required that should have been printed either on a foldout that preserved the integrity of the print or on the long axis of the book. I would rather turn the book 90 degrees to view the intact illustration than have it broken by the binding. Disappointing, given the price of the book..

Nice book. shipping was great and delivery fast so no quibbles there. Images are not quite as accurate as with other more recent publications such as the Sterling/Sibley effort, (which is gorgeous and a bargain). Most of the images in this book are good to very good, and a few are not so good. Dark colored birds lose some of their relief and detail. It is as if many images were underexposed if they had been photos. However what I do love are the wonderful annotations by Roger Peterson on each of the 435 birds. They were carefully researched and thoughtfully written. Also, unlike some criticisms, I like the ordering of the birds by genus and species. I can see how Audubon treated similar birds. So what the reader is getting with this Abbeville production is a combo art book and ornithological treatment of Audubon's birds, which makes sense given that Mr Peterson was so involved in the production. . The intro written by Mr Peterson is also excellent. One final word of caution the book is huge and heavy, that is good and bad. good because you get large bordering on poster sized images. Bad in that one does not easily handle this thing. Lastly the binding and overall physical construction is outstanding. Comes in a beautiful slip case.

This is just as described. A tiny version of the real book. It's hard cover easily hand held and seems to be sturdy. The picture quality is good but it's difficult to see the fine details. This is no fault of the book but just the nature of such a small book. There is a brief biography in the front but if you need reading glasses this may be difficult as the words are very small. It's a nice book for kids to look at and if you don't want to spend the money on the large version. It can easily be carried around, taken to bed to flip through. However, I think to see the true beauty of the work you may want to buy the large coffee table size. Overall, I'm happy with purchase. It is exactly as expected and explained in description.

This book may be "tiny" but it's telling. John James Audubon's birds are a classic of design, wonderfully realistic, and authentically American. Well worth having or to give as a present.

This "baby elephant folio" is indeed a tiny but complete book of Audubon's "Birds of America." It is a perfect edition to give as a gift to friends and family who are Audubon aficionados. It is great quality and the price can't be beat; I purchased several.I am adding this note: I have been reading through all the reviews and comments to reviews and it is obvious that many of the reviews are referring to a different sized edition of "Audubon's Birds of America" that have been for sale on Amazon. The item I wrote my review for and what is titled for sale as "Audubon's Birds of America" (Tiny Folio) is not the same book most people are reviewing, so it is confusing. The so-called "tiny folio" is not actually the title of the book being sold here. The book, which IS tiny and measures 4.5 x 4.3 x 1.5 inches, is hard covered and contains 435 pages. It is small but fully packed! It is sturdy! The actual title is "The National Audubon Society BABY Elephant Folio Audubon's Birds of America." It doesn't say "tiny" anywhere, only in Amazon's description. This book is not a coffee table book, it isn't for scholars, it isn't so big it won't fit into a bookcase, it sits nicely in the palm of your hand, actually covering just the palm of your hand, and it is beautiful! It is a great gift for someone who has everything, or someone who has shown some interest in Audubon's major work but doesn't want a bigger book, it is great to have in your own bookcase or on the corner of the desk. I think Amazon needs to review its description for this BABY folio and take out the "tiny" from the description and then when they get other editions (which are sure to be larger) to be sure they have the correct description for them. BUYER BEWARE! This book is very small but you will love it!

Book I received came in a beautiful box case.This book makes a great gift, but the person who you are giving it to, needs to be in healthy and strong shape.Book is much too large for normal sized book case.

This review is for the Tiny Folio of "Audubon's Birds of America." It's a gorgeous little book, very thick but very small dimensions - it can fit in the palm of your hand easily! Nonetheless, the images in it are beautiful and the book is very well-made. We are studying Audubon in our homeschool and my young children adore this little book; its tiny size makes it irresistible and they never grow tired of looking at the many images it contains. We will be checking the large folio out from the library, but if you love Audubon's artwork but don't have room for or can't afford the giant edition, this tiny book will delight children and adults alike!
