I love this book. I plan to buy it for all my friends. I love the big wall, the analysis of the painters from Giotto to the advent of modern day cameras. Not too many words, but many paintings which illustrated the themes Hockney was discussing. I was so excited reading this I couldn't put down the book and it is a heavy book! I didn't realize so many artists may have used the camera obscura method. By chance I was talking with my sister, who is an artist, and she said they taught the camera obscura in her art school. They taught it to help the students see better, but then I really knew that it was true that artists have been using this method since 1430, as Hockney wrote. I am not done exploring this idea. I found it very exciting not just in terms of how Vermeer painted, but many, many other artists.

I saw the movie "Monuments Men". I never heard of these brave men who risked their lives saving the great art treasures of Europe. The book that it was based on was over 400 pages and cost a pretty penny (even on Kindle editions). That's when I decided to purchase the Kindle Summary edition. One of the selling points for me was that it could be read in thirty minutes. I'm always reading at least 3 books at the same time so I thought this was a quick way to fill in the gaps the movie left out.The Summary was brief and to the point, filling in the entire story of the Monuments Men. I will purchase another Summary if I need to fill in my curiosity about a topic without spending a high price for a full book. I highly recommend Kindle Summary editions. Consider it as Cliff Notes for those of us who have been out of school for too long.

I was fascinated by the movie and wanted to read the book, but the book is huge and this summary seemed far more managable to explore. I think I was struck by the story because of the grand scale of what these men achieved and also happy to know that they were not young men, but expecrienced professionals who truly appreciated art in all its forms and knew exactly what treasuresthey sought, where to begin and were able to track and locate many of the items stolen by the Nazi regime. Fascinating story and great complement to the book "The Monuments Men".

Robert Edsel's "The Monuments Men" is the story of one particular group of men tasked with saving the greatest works of art in Europe. While the world was paying attention to the atrocities Hitler was committing against people, he had another mission in motion. This was to steal great works of art and to destroy the ones that he did not approve of. To stop them a small special force group of American and British volunteers worked behind enemy lines to save the art. This story is full of action and really kept my attention. I appreciated that the review provided key points at the end of each section. These “take aways” helped me to focus on the historic timeline as the events were happening. The characters are also well developed and really made this little known part of WWII history come to life for me. I’m glad that the review convinced me to give the book a chance. Reading the story of these heroes before seeing the movie adaptation will be a great way to experience this part of history.

I enjoyed what I read of this book. It was interesting, but it is a lot longer than I had time for. If one has the time and a quiet place to read this book, I recommend it. It tells a true and important story about WWII and the world of art that Hitler and his reich were bent on owning or destroying.

This gave the barest highlights. I would rather have the whole book. But that was my fault in choosing the summary. I find that I really like all the details a bit more. Adequate as a summary, but leaves out so much even for a summary.

If you're looking to learn more about modern-day infrastructure, picking this book would not be a bad start. It's not going to go in-depth about every nook and cranny of the electrical grid but it gives a nice high level explanation of how everything fits together. I appreciated how the author started small (his front yard) in many instances and then worked his way up through the levels to explain the systems. Would have appreciated him stepping outside of Raleigh a little more to explain the infrastructure in other cities but regardless he seemed to do a lot of research and I enjoyed the book :)

Very interesting read. Had to read it for my MPA class, but probably one of the more interesting books I read for my program. Gives you a really good look at infrastructure. Quick read and full of interesting facts.

I got involved in Infrastructure as a volunteer and i had never studied it. This book was a really interesting read and gave a top to bottom view of Infrastructure. If you have a child that might enjoy engineering i definitely recommend this book as a way to get them interested.

Great book. Made me fall in love with Raleigh Utilities all over again.

I saw the author at a benefit for the local news organization and I bought this book to find out how the infrastructure works. I work for the city of Raleigh and to hear about this from a citizen's point of view, was very interesting and very understandable.

Huler excels at infrastructure narrative; very accessible science and engineering.

This book covers everything from power lines to waste water management. It's a must for understanding our infrastructure and very helpful for a deeper appreciation of the environment.

Proved to be perfect for our third-grade granddaughter who was stunned by the illustrations and the fact that all the artists were women.

As in the other books, packed with interesting info without there being too much text that would turn away kids. Beautiful examples of the art - quality and size.

We love this series for our children, the imagery is lovely, and the writing is clear and informative...Is it an art history text book, no, but its fine for younger readers whom are interested in fine art. We have most of the books in the series.

This is all right. However I was hoping for a different selection for younger children. I will continue to use, but will look for a different collection for first grade.

For so long the artists acknowledged as masters were almost exclusively male. This book presents the fine work of 13 female artists. It shows great examples of highly regarded art. At least every young girl should be exposed to these beautiful pieces of art.

My blood pressure has never been high, however, when I am tense or stressed, it goes up to about 175/80 yet goes down after I calm down. And I have also suffered from tension headaches as well as the blood pressure problem. So after reading this book, I followed the advice and began eating more foods with magnesium and also taking magnesium supplements (along with calicum and potassium) and my headaches are gone and my blood pressure is 120/70 and on a steady basis.***Note that high blood pressure or headaches should never be taken lightly...these can be caused by a serious disorder. Be sure that you see a doctor and follow his or her advice.For me, before reading this book, I went to see my doctor who said my headaches were stress related. Then I discovered thus book and stepped up my magnesium...it worked for me.

If it weren't for this book my blood pressure would still be out of control. Before I got it, I went to the doctors. My pressure was 150/110 I was given an additional med and a referral. Can I rate the book a 6??? Why hasn't someone told us about this sooner? It all makes sense. I started taking DOUBLE my dose of chelated "Magnesium Potassium Aspartate" (Country Life - available on Amazon), and my BP went down to 114/74, and has stayed there. This is the higher dose that Dr. Cohen says Dr. Seeley used - total 1200 mg. of Magnesium per day. Amazing!I also read a lot of the medical journal articles cited, and extra Mg also helps with blood sugar / insulin control. My husband's fasting BG went down quite a bit, too.Best money spent for a long time. Thanks, Dr. Cohen!

This is a life saver. If you are suffering with High Blood Pressure Medication side effects ( the stuff of nightmares ) then read this book. We have turned my wife's life around from a slow slide into madness, to being an active living person in a couple of months. The headaches and confusion and time loss are beginning to be a thing of the past.

Wisdom is power and gives you the understanding of why you are doing this= avoid the illnesses that seem to happen to all around you....and avoid Rx's that will minus your health with side effects....

I have been taking it daily and have noticed about a five point drop in my blood pressure.I would much rather take something natural then pills any day.

I give this book a 5 star rating because it explains Magnesium so effectively in every way as a mineral, a deficiency, a co-companion with potassium and calcium for better absorption and health benefits as well as side effects.

A wonderful book for anyone with high blood pressure. You may be taking way too much medication, and some of it, such as diuretics, may even contribute to Alzheimer's disease and high cholesterol. I have intestinal problems that prevent my body from absorbing magnesium, and after I started taking magnesium taurate, not only did I feel better, but I was able to stop taking half my blood pressure medication. Then I read this book and found out why. I have given copies to a friend who is a nurse practitioner, and to my doctor. It is a safe and sane way to lower your blood pressure. Just be sure you are closely monitored by your doctor and with a home blood pressure kit. You may not be able to get off all your meds, but you just might lower the amount you need. As for side effects, I stopped having migraines, my feet quit hurting, and my achy back is well now.

Wow! This was exhausting to read and it had to be exhausting to write. This is the most comprehensive reference book I’ve ever seen relating to a rock band, or any musician for that matter. It’s amazing how much information is contained in this book. As the blurb on Goodreads says, “Georg Purvis’s meticulous, session-by-session, song-by-song, album-by-album, tour-by-tour record of the band’s progress is the complete reference source that Queen fans have been waiting for.” No kidding. This book details every album, every song (even unreleased songs), every tour and set list, every side project and solo efforts of the members of Queen. It’s unbelievable! Now, I’ve been a big Queen fan since the mid ’70s, so I’m biased. Someone who’s not a fan probably wouldn’t get much out of this book. And even though I’m giving it five stars, there are some weaknesses. Redundancy is a big one. There are only so many descriptions one can read of the same tour for North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, and South America with maybe three song changes in the set lists before boredom sets in. And I don’t care as much about all of the side project and solo work of the band members, so reading about Roger Taylor’s adventures with his band The Cross was uninteresting to me. But each song — are you kidding me??? That is research, my friends! The author of this book is a Queen fan, but also a strict critic who pulls no punches with songs he considers to be weak or bad. He also reports many of the reviews the band received, both good and bad. I learned a lot in reading this heavy 475 page book, and at times, it was highly enjoyable. But, as I mentioned, at other times it was drudgery. One thing the book lacked that surprised me was commentary on the album cover art. I would have enjoyed reading about that and am disappointed it’s not in there. There’s commentary on the videos, so why not the album art? However, I can get past that. I’ve read a lot of Queen books and have many more to read and while it often seems there’s not much more I can learn about the band, a book like this comes along and you realize how much you don’t know at all. It was a lengthy process to get through this book, but I’m glad I did. Recommended for any Queen fan.

It's not an official Queen publication but I was tempted by the bargain Kindle price. Despite having read a number of Queen books over the years, I found a lot of information that I had not read before. Indeed, it is an exhaustive record of tracks, albums, tours, videos and more. Well worth a read, if you're a Queen fan

I was SO happy when this book was FINALLY released for the Kindle. I bought it RIGHT AWAY. I was not disappointed. The best part of the book (the heart of it) was the part that goes through all of the albums one by one. Well worth it for just that alone.There is also a section that lists every song one by one... and info that is known about the songs. I did find one mistake... the song LOVE KILLS that came out of the Metropolis soundtrack (1984) has a solo by another guitarist... not Brian May. This other guitarist played the solo in a very Brian May-esq style... which I think caused Brian some grief. It hurt his feelings and made him feel like he was disposable... which he was crazy to think... because Brian May can never be replaced.BUY THIS BOOK NOW!

This book is all text, no pictures. With that said, it contains lots of great stories on the history of Queen recordings. It gives detailed accounts on how their albums came together. Makes you want to listen to all the classics again.

I consider myself a fan of rock music and the culture that surrounds it. Queen is a juggernaut. So many different sources of great talent... they have an amazing list of achievements. Just imagine a band entering the studio and coming out saying "okay we have our first two songs for the new album, 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions'." It's just unreal.The book is a music historian's dream as they fully cover Queen's entire career. The bulk of it is the part where they go song by song. I ate it up and I loved it. Great book for a Queen fan.

The information in the book is extensive and I have learned many facts about one of my favorite bands of the past 44 years. The only thing that I'm not loving is all of the information about every album (including record labels, multiple release dates, catalog numbers, etc.). But it is simple enough to skip past that and everything else makes up for it. Definitely a must have for any serious Queen fans out there!

I already had a visual documentary book on Queen with a discography and some tour info, but this goes way beyond. It is amazingly and meticulously researched, and it contains every piece of music done by Queen and its individual members, including all solo work done by Freddie, Roger, Brian and even John. It has every album, song, video, DVD and tour. It even has the music done by the configurations of the post-Freddie Queen, which doesn't interest me at all but may interest others. It's a thick book with small print, an encyclopedia, really. My only complaint is that it has no photos at all, which I know isn't the book's purpose, but some would have been nice, just to break it up a bit.
