About the Author

Judith N. Martin is currently Herberger Professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. in speech communication from the Pennsylvania State University. She also studied at the Université de Grenoble for a year, and was involved in study aboard administration for a number of years. She also has experience in cross cultural training and has co-authored three books with Prof. Tom Nakayama. Her current research interests focus on: the role of communication in cross cultural transitions, white identity and and communication, and pedagogical issues in teaching intercultural communication.

This textbook is a piece of junk.I am nine chapters into it for my Intercultural Communications class, and I can honestly say it is the worst textbook ever foisted upon me.The worst offenses are actually in the bank of test questions provided to instructors. About 5-10% of questions on every test are very problematic in their wording and logic, and some of them refer to topics not actually covered in the text. I have presented these problems to my instructor, and she is in full agreement that many of the test questions are terrible. If you are an instructor considering this textbook, you should definitely write your own test questions.The text itself is also poorly written and edited. The most glaring problems are in the logic and organization of the ideas and arguments. Often, one paragraph does not follow logically from the previous. The authors frequently veer off topic and do not stick to their argument's organizational structure established at the beginning of each section. They violate basic principles of clear writing that I learned in English 100.If I had the time, I would go on about how the authors frequently present debatable observations and perspectives as simple facts, missing the opportunity to engage readers in interesting issues with multiple viewpoints, that there is an unacceptable rate of grammatical errors, that it is redundant and boring, but I have already wasted enough of my life dealing with the atrocity that is "Experiencing Intercultural Communication".

I gave the book 3 stars because I have not fully read it yet, however, this review is for the rental on Kindle. This book was the only book that I have ever had on here that has consistently given me trouble. It will not open half the time and when it does it will take 30mins to do so while any other book rented or not will instantly load up. So far I have uninstalled kindle twice and reloaded it and have cancelled to book by deleting it and rented it again to see if it will load properly.

The books has a lot of contradictions and doesn't give a lot of information when it's needed. Not the best text book a class has used.

I liked that it had many vocabulary terms, but I did not like the fact that different terms were used compared to the ones in the book in my class.

In the introduction to his translation of the "Meditations" Gregory Hays observes that "[I]t has been a generation since [The Meditations'] last English incarnation." Hays further explains that he has attempted to present a readable, modern translation of Marcus' great work which still captures the "patchwork character of the original." I find that Hays's translation succeeds. He translates Marcus's reflections into a colloquial, frequently earthy, English in unstilted language and idiom that will be familiar to a modern reader. I think the translation is as well faithful to Marcus's thought. The reflective, meditative character of the paragraphs come through well, as does the difficulty of the text in many places. This is a book that will encourage the modern reader to approach Marcus -- an altogether commendable result.Professor Hays has written an excellent introduction to his translation which can be read with benefit by those coming to the "Meditations" for the first time and by those familiar with the work. There is a brief discussion of Marcus's life, his philosophical studies, and his tenure as emperor of Rome (161-180 A.D.) Hays spends more time on the philosophical background of Marcus's thought emphasizing ancient stoicism and of the philosophy of Heraclitus. He discusses the concept of "logos", a critical term for Marcus and for later thought, and argues that logos -- or the common reason that pervades man and the universe -- is as much a process as it is a substance. This is difficult, but insightful.Hays obviously has a great love for Marcus's book. He is able to offer critical observations which will help the reader focus in studying the Meditations. (For example, Hays argues that Marcus does not fully understand or appreciate human joy. He also argues that Marcus's thought takes an overly static view of the nature of society and does not see the possibility or need for societal change.)Hays discusses briefly the reception of the Meditations over the centuries. I enjoyed in particular his comments on essays by Arnold and Brodsky on Marcus Aurelius.The Meditations is one of the great book of the West and will repay repeated readings. When I read it this time, I was struck by Marcus's devotion to his duties in life as the Roman emperor. I got the distinct impression that Marcus would have rather been at his studies but kept telling himself, in his writings, that he had to persevere and be the person he was meant to be. It is a focused approach, to say the least, to the duties to which one was called.I was also impressed with the similarities at certain points between Marcus's thought and Buddhism. Other reviewers have also noted this similarity. Marcus talks repeatedly about the changing, impermanent character of human life and about the pervasive character of human suffering. He talks about controlling and ending suffering by understanding its causes and then changing one's life accordingly. There is a need to learn patience and to control anger and desire. More specifically, Marcus' understanding of perception and how it leads to desire and can be controlled by reason (discussed well in Hays's introduction.) is very Buddhist in tone. I have become interested in Buddhism and was struck in this reading of the Meditations by the parallels it offers to Buddhist thought.There is a wonderful paragraph in the Meditations where Marcus urges himself to persevere and not to lose hope simply because he did not become a scholar or a hero or the person of his dreams. What matters is being a good person and living in harmony with one's nature. This passage spoke clearly and poignantly to me as I reread the Meditations. Undoubtedly, the reader will find passages in this book that are addressed clearly to him or her.This is a book that should be read and pondered many times. Hays and the Modern Library have done readers a service with this translation.Robin Friedman

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

I was excited to read another book by these two authors again. The wait was worth it. The characters are developed and interesting. They’re not the typical repetitive kind of daughter, father, boyfriend etc. that you find in a lot of books these days. They have flaws and are very different from each other which keeps it real. The story has you guessing as to where it’s going and the surprises are fun when they happen. I can usually put books down to sleep but this one had me losing some zzz’s for just “one more chapter”. I’d like to see another book with the same characters now that the cat is out of the bag. It would be fun to see what’s next for all of them.

I rarely read fiction anymore but I could not put this book down! I love Rod's story telling style, it pulled me through and I read this book nonstop on a flight. Felt like a kid again reading page after page with such anticipation. And the best part about this book is that you'll learn some simple but powerful techniques that will improve your life.

So excited to have another read from this pair of writers. I've been looking forward to it for months.Couldn't put it down and I'm on my second read.I've even started using the releasing techniques.Can't wait for their next book.

I'm not sure where Mr Majic should be placed on Kindle. But if there is a niche category for "Brilliantly Fun Reads," this book ranks #1.For fans of the Pennington/Martin writing duo, expect all the usual -- multi-dimensional characters involved in an engaging story line with twists and turns you never see coming. For new readers, buy this book as an introduction to the Pennington/Martin catalog of creative genius. Not just for kids.. I love reading the books to my 10 yr old!We started this series with my momma when my oldest (now 16) was 8. We continued with my youngest (now 10), and we love the books. While not thrilled they changed the order of the books, we still love the stories. Being from Texas, this one especially holds a place in my heart. It was historically accurate and also beautifully written. We read 2 chapters a night, and I was just as excited as the girls to hear what happened next!Trust me, these books have no age limit..

I liked the uplifting stories about that horrible time in Galveston. There were many real heroes.

My daughter is 8 and she loves Magic Treehouse books, she read this as soon as she got it

I use this in class like all the Magic Tree books. Good balance of fiction and non fiction reading that the students love.

My 7 year old daughter loves the Magic Treehouse books! Even I love reading them to her. Highly recommend this series!

"You can't judge a book by it's cover." We have all heard that. When I saw CARROTS on the cover of a book for ketogenic dieting, I thought, well here we go again. Everybody knows that carrots have too much sugar. However, once you actually read the book (as well as looking at the delicious photos) you find a ketogenic diet gourmet gem. They rightly state in the "Foods to Enjoy" table on page 8 that carrots can be included but "only with moderation". The basic information regarding achieving a ketogenic lifestyle is brief, yet accurate. The whole book tells you how to have "Foods to Enjoy" on your ketogenic diet. The recipes chosen are diverse and simplified for our busy lives, yet delicious and adding that little bit of joy from a selection of self-prepared foods which taste real good. I enjoy the Blackberry-Chia Pudding (Frozen Blackberries from my backyard).So, with additional thought after writing this review, in this case we can judge a book by it's cover. Delicious to look at, Delicious to read, and by following the "made easy" recipes, Delicious to eat.I highly recommend this book for those who have been following a ketogenic lifestyle for a long time to learn some new recipes to spice up our life, and to make life a little easier. For those who are just in the contemplation stage, or who are ready to begin, this cookbook lives up to it's calling card in Chapter One: "Simple & Easy Ketogenic Cooking".For those who want more of the "science" behind the ketogenic diet, it will be a good companion to the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Phiney and Volek".Reading and "digesting" this cookbook is a good way to start off the New Year on a ketogenic diet. 5 stars in my opinion.

I bought this book because it had “5 ingredients” in the title.i thought it would be easy peasy for cooking during the hectic work week. The recipes are pretty easy but most required more than 5 ingredients which is irritating since the name is “Easy 5 ingredients...”

I Wanted to love this. The high net carb levels are ridiculously high for each portion (like 13 and 15!!) which completely defeats keto!! Beware!!!

The name of this book is misleading. Very few of the recipes contain five or less ingredients. The author also includes specialty ingredients such as “Perfect Keto Exogenous Ketone Powder in Peaches and Cream”. I was expecting ingredients that I could purchase at my local grocery store.

This book has it all! The recipes and ingredients are simple and accessible, and I actually want to eat just about everything in here. I’m following a strict Keto profile (20g of total carbs a day) and I can eat many of the recipes here; however there are a large handful that have too many carbs for me at this point. If you are doing net 20g or even moderate Keto just about everything should be right on track for you.

Apparently, I'm one of those metabolically resistant people that takes just a little bit longer to adjust to a ketogenic diet. I needed easy days when I was first starting and occasionally I still need them because I'm still adjusting to the diet. I've only been on it for about a month and I still have days where I feel incredibly tired and I'm still trying to get the hang of what my macros need to be for somebody with insulin resistance and high cortisol levels. This book can really help people who are just tired and don't really have the energy to meal prep using recipes that have 15 or 20 ingredients. A lot of the recipes are super easy and they're delicious. They are mostly all ingredients that you can find locally no matter where you live. Many are budget friendly. I also found the even if you don't follow the recipes exactly, this is more about giving you ideas for ways that you can pair foods together so you don't get bored while still keeping it easy. You can get some ideas on what flavors would work together so that you don't give up from boredom of just eating eggs and avocado everyday. I also like that the author often includes the brand names of certain key ingredients that she uses and that takes some of the stress out of grocery shopping. For instance, I don't want to be standing in the grocery store and reviewing the nutrition facts on every pizza sauce in the store to try to find the lowest carb one. She tells you which brand she uses and if your local grocers don't have it, you can always look to see if Amazon has it. You don't have to waste your time hunting around for one that tastes good and has the right carb counts. Not all of us live close to stores that carry endless options for low carb living so I like the simple ingredient lists and I like that she lists the name brands so that if you can't find them, you at least know what to order.

If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. Jen somehow made my transition to Keto the easiest, and BEST thing I’ve ever done for myself. My family gobbles up her meals with no leftovers to spare! Don’t waste a second trying to decide. BUY. THIS. BOOK.

I was expecting very simple, enjoyable recipes and ended up with expensive and time consuming ones. I’m a little disappointed in this book as I heard it has such great reviews. Not to mention most are more than 5 imgredients.

I got into My Hero Academia after seeing a short clip on Funimation's Facebook page. I became hooked on the anime and season 2 ended I just had to get into reading the manga (especially after a couple of YouTube reviews if the anime and manga). The illustration is amazing and the storytelling is awesome. I like the use of bird's eye view to further help with understanding what is going on as well notes on characters. (There are a lot of characters nd their quirks to remember.) The only other manga I've read was Attack on Titans.

As a HUGE fan of the franchise, several moments stand out to me, in both the manga and anime. One of them is the fight in this volume against Muscular, a fight where Deku must put it all on the line to save a life, even if it is the life of someone who hates him.As this volume begins, the training camp from hell that resembles more a special ops training camp than anything else is in full swing. The would-be heroes are training their powers for everything they are worth, with the hope of becomes full-time heroes that battle evil. Eventually, after much sweat, agony, and so forth, the students are rewarded with some free time to have an organized game, and then the villains attack.But this time, the stakes are far, far higher. For this is not the collection of random street thugs just collected and thrown at the heroes. This is a small group of highly, and frighteningly, skilled baddies. And they are out to murder and maim as many members of Classes A and B as they can, among other objectives.So now the students are in for an enormously hard fight, one where any minor mistake could mean death. Into this comes Izuku, who is determined to save the boy Kota, despite the boy's bad treatment as he feels for the kid and, hey, this is Deku we are talking about. *Of course* he'll try to save anyone he can. But this time, he meets the villain Muscular, who is the toughest challenge a still learning Izuku has faced...I really liked the art here. I know that is stated often in reviews by folks, myself included, but I did. It was both very good, and showed the action well. Some series show action well, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out the heck is going on. Not so here. Here the action is detailed and all the better and clearer for it.The characterization was good, as it showed us both the heroism of the good guys, and the sheer evil and/or insanity of the bad guys. This adds to the stakes, as we know that, for the first time, someone could really, truly die. Special mention goes to, among the good guy characters, the aforementioned Deku, but also Ochaco, Tsuyu, Todoroki, and Shoji. Of course, both among the pro-heroes, both Aizawa-sensei and Mandalay were cool.This was the darkest volume of the series so far, bar none, though I know from spoilers that it isn't the darkest period. But always, always, the light - via light-hearted moments, comedy, good prevailing over evil, so on - shines. In the case of this volume, there is a huge cliff-hanger that is going to be resolved in future ones.This is one heck of a ride and one that is only getting better.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

Probably one of the best fights so far, can't recommend this volume enough.

One of the best current manga/anime series out today.Only complaints time till digital release is slow and no ability to save particular panels for print, though I understand why that is.
