About the Author

Michael Hudson is a Distinguished Research Professor of Economics at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC), and Professor of Economics at Peking University in China. He gives speeches, lectures and presentations all over the world for official and unofficial groups reflecting diverse academic, economic and political constituencies. Before moving into research and consulting, Prof. Hudson spent several years applying flow-of-funds and balance-of-payments statistics to forecast interest rates, capital and real estate markets for Chase Manhattan Bank and The Hudson Institute (no relation). His academic focus has been on financial history and, since 1980, on writing a history of debt, land tenure and related economic institutions from the Sumerian period, antiquity, and feudal Europe to the present. Since 1996 as president of the Institute for the Study of Long Term Economic Trends (ISLET), he has written reports and given presentations on balance of payments, financial bubbles, land policy and financial reforms for U.S. and international clients and governments. He organized the International Scholars Conference on Ancient Near Eastern Economies (ISCANEE) in 1993, and to-date has co-edited the preceedings of six academic conferences on the evolution of property, credit, labor and accounting since the Bronze Age. ,I am a 55 yr old that doesn't have a college degree and I found it very easy to understand the concepts and the choice we have as a society . With the information and the understanding this book gives you it is easy to see how this has played out over the last 40 yrs and continues to play out .The Steven Moores and Art Laffers that are always on MSM gives one side of the argument but you never see the other side of the argument and that is a shame I once believed in regonomics because I didn't understand fully what it meant I do now thank you .This book gives you a understanding and a choice of what system we should use the one that gave America the biggest middle class the world had ever seen or the one we have now !

This is a timely, amazing book that everyone should read.Economists get hugely rewarded for espousing policy beliefs that increase the wealth of the rich, so it's hard to find modern economic thought that actually helps the middle class. Michael Hudson has been an economist of the people for decades even though it's been a constant burden on his career. He is a man who puts personal advancement behind academic honestly; a rarity in our times.Kudos Mr. Hudson!

Excellent analysis by Mr. Hudson. Now, when I read any financial commentary, I immediately understand what is being said and what the intent of the commentor is - false narrative or otherwise. It's really a shame that that the U.S. financial system is so malicious and attempt to misdirect attention on itself through misinformation ... After reading this, I don't see how the U.S. can survive maintaining the current system - the end game seems to be that everyone dies of starvation and exposure and only those in the financial industry survive.

I like that the Author really understands economic history and made me realize I didn't understand Adam Smith at all. I'd consider myself more on the right wing side of things, but this author has won me over with how logical and supported his arguments are. I only take a star off because I feel like the Author repeats himself a lot, and spends too much time dismantling economic systems and not enough time going into how to make better ones. I'd really enjoy hearing as in depth a solution to economic issues as he did with the critique. As for repeating himself it seems that often many letters go back the same thing, finance and insurance are destroying the economy. That's fine but I got the message after the first 5 times I read it. Still though, this is the only left wing economist I respect and I've bought multiple books from him. These books are full of information you wont hear elsewhere.

This book helps folks understand what has happened to the economy and how those at the top have rigged the system in their favor at the expense of ordinary people.

It doesn't get much better than Michael Hudson. Great book.

Dr. Hudson's message is invaluable, in illustrating how the classical economics of Adam Smith and his successors has been turned upside-down by the Chicago School and the neos - both con and lib. He explains that today's onerous taxation of labor and of industrial production is the opposite of their prescription for a sound, durable economy, how the unproductive activity of the FIRE sector goes untaxed, and how it has, in fact, completely taken control of today's America and appropriated virtually all of the "wealth" generated in recent years for The One Per Cent.Several interviews and essays can be found online in which Hudson outlines these principles clearly and succinctly. Unfortunately, this lens, through which every alphabetical entry is viewed, results in a stpifying amount of repetition. His denunciation of parasitic rentiers, with only minor rewording, appears literally dozens of times. I would not have thought that this amount of redundancy could be found between a single pair of book covers. This text also does not appear to have benefited from an editor, and contains numerous typos and instances of sloppy wording.I'm glad to understand these concepts, thanks to Michael Hudson, and this volume will remain on my shelf as a valuable reference book, but it will try the patience of any sentient reader.Did I mention that it is redundant?

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is wonderfully clear and sharply stated - everybody should have read it before leaving school so they would have some chance of understanding the world they've been spawned in. It even induces occasional wry laughs...

This book is good. The author did do a good job on some areas, but there were some areas where there could be much MORE information. One example, regarding the federal, state and local revenue and spending information could have offered much more to the students understanding.My professor apparently loves this author because she spoke of this book throughout, which ironically, she did not require it as our text. I got it because she did provide some information from this book for a paper and I liked what I read. I thought it would be useful for extra educational purposes. I didn't use it as much as I thought I would, but it did come handy for an occasional reference.In addition, PLEASE check the school out before committing to it. America's educational system is in BIG trouble! Most "professors" do not want to teach anymore, and MANY of them are NOT qualified to teach. Northern Arizona University (NAU) has too many "professors" that don't want to teach or give constructive feedback or feedback at all! This school is bordering on being a joke! I had to literally teach myself for most of my classes, there were few professors who are good. When your paying HIGH tuition you should be getting a SOLID education! NAU does not care if the students complain and they make it clear it is NOT about your education, but the MONEY THEY GET FROM YOU! For my Master's I am going to research extensively before I commit... If we as students make our VOICE heard about these schools, then they will have to listen and this will force them to do better!

It's a detailed primer on public administration, and I believe the author's have done an exceptional job with compiling a lot of information and publishing it in a very digestible manner. Many MPA programs use this book (and with good reason) for intro classes. The authors took the approach of providing an adequate depth of many common public administration topics, but obviously doesn't delve too deeply into each section as there are complete fields of academic literature on such topics (ie, the chapter of human resources introduces the student to that topic but isn't all-encompassing). The authors provide detailed information while avoiding overwhelming the reader.It would have been five stars if not for the blatant political favoritism of the authors. Granted many students of MPA programs like myself are inclined to be progressive in nature but academic materials are supposed to be objective texts, way too much "my president was great then these guys screwed up for a few years" for my taste. As an instructor you may want to give your class a head's up to appreciate the detailed information in the book and overlook the authors' biases. Assuming your students even notice of course.

The seller's description stated the book was in okay/good condition. The first 3 chapters of the book have significant damage from liquid, pretty sure coffee, because the pages are discolored and some are stuck together. Because some of the pages were stuck together, the print had ran together and chunks of words are missing, making it hard to read the material. Also there were pages completely missing out of the book. I completely missed it until I was getting quizzed on the information, and discovered that I did not even read that information due to missing pages. Not an accurate represenation of the book's condition.

While the book was great condition and it was exactly what I needed for class, I received it 4 days later than I needed it. This is ridiculous considering that I even paid extra shipping to make sure it'd get here on time. My professor graciously gave me an extension on my assignments, but I was still behind in the class. It's been a hassle. Order earlier rather than later.

I bought new so I could use the course reader. The professor didn't know anything about accessing the code. I called the course reader hotline and they said the couldn't give me access without the professors code. Waste of money paying extra to get course reader that no one will activate.

This is a decent text. I am using it in my MPA grad program. It is semi-easy to follow however it seems the author tried to see how much they could cram on the page due to the small print.

About the Author

Judith N. Martin is currently Herberger Professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. in speech communication from the Pennsylvania State University. She also studied at the Université de Grenoble for a year, and was involved in study aboard administration for a number of years. This textbook is a piece of junk.I am nine chapters into it for my Intercultural Communications class, and I can honestly say it is the worst textbook ever foisted upon me.The worst offenses are actually in the bank of test questions provided to instructors. About 5-10% of questions on every test are very problematic in their wording and logic, and some of them refer to topics not actually covered in the text. I have presented these problems to my instructor, and she is in full agreement that many of the test questions are terrible. If you are an instructor considering this textbook, you should definitely write your own test questions.The text itself is also poorly written and edited. The most glaring problems are in the logic and organization of the ideas and arguments. Often, one paragraph does not follow logically from the previous. The authors frequently veer off topic and do not stick to their argument's organizational structure established at the beginning of each section. They violate basic principles of clear writing that I learned in English 100.If I had the time, I would go on about how the authors frequently present debatable observations and perspectives as simple facts, missing the opportunity to engage readers in interesting issues with multiple viewpoints, that there is an unacceptable rate of grammatical errors, that it is redundant and boring, but I have already wasted enough of my life dealing with the atrocity that is "Experiencing Intercultural Communication".

I gave the book 3 stars because I have not fully read it yet, however, this review is for the rental on Kindle. This book was the only book that I have ever had on here that has consistently given me trouble. It will not open half the time and when it does it will take 30mins to do so while any other book rented or not will instantly load up. So far I have uninstalled kindle twice and reloaded it and have cancelled to book by deleting it and rented it again to see if it will load properly.

The books has a lot of contradictions and doesn't give a lot of information when it's needed. Not the best text book a class has used.

I liked that it had many vocabulary terms, but I did not like the fact that different terms were used compared to the ones in the book in my class.

In the introduction to his translation of the "Meditations" Gregory Hays observes that "[I]t has been a generation since [The Meditations'] last English incarnation." Hays further explains that he has attempted to present a readable, modern translation of Marcus' great work which still captures the "patchwork character of the original." I find that Hays's translation succeeds. He translates Marcus's reflections into a colloquial, frequently earthy, English in unstilted language and idiom that will be familiar to a modern reader. I think the translation is as well faithful to Marcus's thought. The reflective, meditative character of the paragraphs come through well, as does the difficulty of the text in many places. This is a book that will encourage the modern reader to approach Marcus -- an altogether commendable result.Professor Hays has written an excellent introduction to his translation which can be read with benefit by those coming to the "Meditations" for the first time and by those familiar with the work. There is a brief discussion of Marcus's life, his philosophical studies, and his tenure as emperor of Rome (161-180 A.D.) Hays spends more time on the philosophical background of Marcus's thought emphasizing ancient stoicism and of the philosophy of Heraclitus. He discusses the concept of "logos", a critical term for Marcus and for later thought, and argues that logos -- or the common reason that pervades man and the universe -- is as much a process as it is a substance. This is difficult, but insightful.Hays obviously has a great love for Marcus's book. He is able to offer critical observations which will help the reader focus in studying the Meditations. (For example, Hays argues that Marcus does not fully understand or appreciate human joy. He also argues that Marcus's thought takes an overly static view of the nature of society and does not see the possibility or need for societal change.)Hays discusses briefly the reception of the Meditations over the centuries. I enjoyed in particular his comments on essays by Arnold and Brodsky on Marcus Aurelius.The Meditations is one of the great book of the West and will repay repeated readings. When I read it this time, I was struck by Marcus's devotion to his duties in life as the Roman emperor. I got the distinct impression that Marcus would have rather been at his studies but kept telling himself, in his writings, that he had to persevere and be the person he was meant to be. It is a focused approach, to say the least, to the duties to which one was called.I was also impressed with the similarities at certain points between Marcus's thought and Buddhism. Other reviewers have also noted this similarity. Marcus talks repeatedly about the changing, impermanent character of human life and about the pervasive character of human suffering. He talks about controlling and ending suffering by understanding its causes and then changing one's life accordingly. There is a need to learn patience and to control anger and desire. More specifically, Marcus' understanding of perception and how it leads to desire and can be controlled by reason (discussed well in Hays's introduction.) is very Buddhist in tone. I have become interested in Buddhism and was struck in this reading of the Meditations by the parallels it offers to Buddhist thought.There is a wonderful paragraph in the Meditations where Marcus urges himself to persevere and not to lose hope simply because he did not become a scholar or a hero or the person of his dreams. What matters is being a good person and living in harmony with one's nature. This passage spoke clearly and poignantly to me as I reread the Meditations. Undoubtedly, the reader will find passages in this book that are addressed clearly to him or her.This is a book that should be read and pondered many times. Hays and the Modern Library have done readers a service with this translation.Robin Friedman

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

I was excited to read another book by these two authors again. The wait was worth it. The characters are developed and interesting. They’re not the typical repetitive kind of daughter, father, boyfriend etc. that you find in a lot of books these days. They have flaws and are very different from each other which keeps it real. The story has you guessing as to where it’s going and the surprises are fun when they happen. I can usually put books down to sleep but this one had me losing some zzz’s for just “one more chapter”. I’d like to see another book with the same characters now that the cat is out of the bag. It would be fun to see what’s next for all of them.

I rarely read fiction anymore but I could not put this book down! I love Rod's story telling style, it pulled me through and I read this book nonstop on a flight. Felt like a kid again reading page after page with such anticipation. And the best part about this book is that you'll learn some simple but powerful techniques that will improve your life.

So excited to have another read from this pair of writers. I've been looking forward to it for months.Couldn't put it down and I'm on my second read.I've even started using the releasing techniques.Can't wait for their next book.

I'm not sure where Mr Majic should be placed on Kindle. But if there is a niche category for "Brilliantly Fun Reads," this book ranks #1.For fans of the Pennington/Martin writing duo, expect all the usual -- multi-dimensional characters involved in an engaging story line with twists and turns you never see coming. For new readers, buy this book as an introduction to the Pennington/Martin catalog of creative genius. This "who-dun-it" (or more aptly stated "who-is-it") will quickly become your favorite book of the year.

This is a terrific book that blends awakening and enlightenment with romance and hope. Well worth your time to check out this new novel!
