About the Author

Leah Brooks is the founder of Young Urban Modern Chefs (Y.U.M. Chefs), a San Francisco cooking school for kids. Y.U.M. Chefs holds classes, summer camps, and birthday parties for hundreds of children a year in its kitchen/classroom in the Mission District. Their focus is on changing the way kids see food, making it approachable, healthy, and fun. They also emphasize seasonality, and have a well-used classroom garden to teach growing and harvesting fresh vegetables. They’re also a staple at the Noe Valley Farmers Market, where they do community outreach and hold a monthly class. They are a project of Open Mind, a non-profit dedicated to the development and education of children. Leah Brooks grew up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where she began her culinary career. She graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle’s culinary program and worked under two of Seattle’s James Beard Award winning chefs for seven years. Leah currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she shares her passion for local fresh foods with young people in her celebrated hands-on cooking classes at Young Urban Modern Chefs (Y.U.M. There are a lot of good recipes with adjustments for different skill levels ("little hands"). It is sturdy and seems like it will stand up to years of use! I bought this for a basket I am putting together for a silent auction. I was happy to see that it included savory recipes and not just desserts. It appears very nicely done, but I never actually tried any recipes.

My wife/son have had soooo much fun with this book.....I get more free time now lol! Seriously. The recipes are simple, fun, and taste great....without the delivery fees or restaurant crowds.

We love these MapEasy maps for travel, and have used them in Venice, Rome, and Paris. They are the perfect map for planning a walking day in a touristy city. We found them easy to read with plenty of detail, and liked the fact that points of interest (attractions, restaurants, hotels, banks, churches, parking, transportation, etc) are clearly market with the major sights drawn in with pictures and brief descriptions. Someone complained that the churches were not drawn to scale. If you are looking for an accurate satellite image or detailed driving map that extends beyond the city centers, then no, this isn't it, but we loved that the images and explanations helped us plan our walking adventures. The little drawings were even helpful with navigation! This isn't one of those useless local maps you pick up in restaurant foyers with cute images all over it. The scale and detail is very good and we never once got lost with these maps. I am on here writing this review now because I am searching for MapEasy maps for our next trip.

Not very useful as a map. It's more of a tour guide, with main sites to see. Has lots of hotels on map, but can't find the main train station. Bought on Amazon Prime, and when I went to return it found there would be a charge of $4.95 to return. Will not buy from this company again!

This map is for the tourist who wants to visit major sites as well as have suggestions for restaurants and hotels that are close to the historic sites they want to visit. With the drawings of the site right on the map, it makes finding them easy. Every street is not listed, but major ones and typical tourist routes are very plainly represented. Walking around with a map might label you as a tourist, but you can use the map to plan your route before heading out, or even use it to plan seeing things located nearby to save steps on your trip before leaving home.

You can certainly get a free map when arriving, but we found this map useful. It's accurate (which you expect in a map), but also has good detail in key tourist areas and has independent recommendations for restaurants etc. we used it for several spots, and found a grocery store while in route for a picnic (could not have been found without the map). We use guidebooks on our iPad, but you can't really use the iPad like a map, Especially in Rome. Even if using Google maps, I don't think it works well while you are actually moving about the city... You need a real map. Only downside, no real transit info, except metro stations. You do need to understand the Bus system via a guidebook or online tool separately, the metro is limited in Rome wrt tourist spots.

The best travel map ever. MapEasy allows you to plan and explore from the comfort of you home or hotel. The large, well marked, colorful map show (via drawings) the main sights, lesser sights, hotels, restaurants and shopping. A must have for your travel.

I liked this map because of the colorful pictures with the main attractions. It did not list all the streets but with a phone walking app it is great. The main reason I bought it was to use when scrapbooking the 2000 pictures I had.

My travel agent recommended this guide to Rome. I am so happy I purchased this as it was a great help while in Rome. Made of a sturdy, plastic like material so it holds up and doesn't get torn like paper maps. Plus it has suggestions of places to see while in Rome and highlights them on the map. Wouldn't go without it on my next trip.

Most of the ingredients in this book, other than possibly the flour and the water will not be found easily in the home cook's basic pantry, nor will they be located at your local grocery store unless that store is a specialty foods place.All of that aside, this is a well organised and useful book regardless. The beginning sections of the book deal with how to make a basic dough and how flour and water bind together to make pasta, so for people just starting out making their own, this is helpful information. There is also a complete section on how to cook the pasta properly.The photos in this cook book are beautifully done and there are many of them, so if you are like I am and want to see if your product looks like the recipe says it should, this is a good book for that.The book is arranged into seasons so you have a perfect pasta for each time of the year.Overall I thought this was a delightful addition to my home library and would recommend it for those looking to add a little excitement to their family dishes.This review is based on a complimentary copy from Blogging for Books in exchange for an unbiased review.

I've been to the author's San Francisco restaurant a couple of times, and the book is kind of like the restaurant: good, entertaining, but not quite worth the price. It's part memoir, part cookbook. The recipes are kind of fussy, with some obscure ingredients you aren't likely to find outside of a major foodie capital like San Francisco. It's worth checking out of a library to get his take on basic pasta technique, which is not quite the same as you find in your average Italian cookbook or Youtube video, but it's not really a keeper.

Beautiful book. Most recipes call for crazy ingredients though, such as wild boar and things I've never even heard of. The book was extremely informative and very in depth in teaching professional techniques. I just wish some of the recipes were made from ingredients I could buy at a supermarket.

This is a fantastic book. I have spent cooking time in Bologne and in Brescia. These are classic classic!!! Fabulous find. Your pasta will be totally authentic if you follow these instructions. I could have saved thousands in cooking class fees but wouldn't have known how authentic and real this collection of recipes is (because...well Italy). I bought a copy for me and now I am buying one for each of my chefs. One of the best most clearly written books on classic pastas.

Pasta should be simple. It's what my Nonna preached to me from childhood. These recipes are not simple. In fact, they overcomplicate many simple steps. I also don't appreciate recipes that are missing lines of text. The prep instructions for the heirloom tomatoes on p. 55 drops a line of instruction. Not hard to figure what was missing, but this is just unforgivable in a book at this price.There are too many recipes calling for exotic ingredients not available in most markets.The photography is stunning.

This book will tell you more than you will every need to know about pasta. From how to make it, how to cook it, and to what kind of sauce each pasta should be paired with (recipes included). This book would be a great addition to anyone that has a sparked interest in cooking, and especially eating, homemade pasta.

I just received this book and am very anxious to start cooking! I was inspired to start making my own pasta after a recent cooking class vacation in Perugia. Well, I turn to page 186 for the corzetti with sausage, clams and Fennel but am bewildered that there is NO fennel in the ingredients? Just returned from the farmer's market with fresh fennel so I guess I will have to ad-lib this one!! Can't really review the book but the pics are fabulous and now I want my own corzetti stamp! :)

I have been making pasta for a long time now but wanted to find new recipes. Well this book is amazing! So many interesting recipes and new ideas. It is beautifully laid out and has a lot of great information. Highly recommend if you love pasta!

About the Author

Her birth in a D.P. camp in Germany marked Ettie Zilber with a special responsibility. Retirement from a career as an educator in international schools in six countries has given her the opportunity to fulfill that responsibility --to research and document her family's Holocaust experiences -- and reflect on their impact on the next generation. The author of Third Culture Kids: Children of International School Educators, and numerous professional publications, conducts workshops on cross-cultural sensitivity, international-mindedness, tolerance and global citizenship for youth and adults. Ettie's book is a very real first-person narrative of her mother's survival during the Holocaust. It is written in the mother's words, but it is about the Holocaust experience of many family members as well. The book shows an amazing ability to survive, do what needed to be done, and remain hopeful and positive regardless of separation from family members and dealing with all the horrors perpetrated against Jewish people. Her solution was to form very strong bonds with other women walking the same road as she. The hardship was very real and heart-wrenching. It is very well documented with footnotes and references. The book is in 3 parts. After the mother's story, part 2 is about the eldest daughter's 3-week travel to Lithuania and Poland with a long list of names, places, dates, and events. With the help of a guide and visits to Holocaust museums and digging into historical archives she was able to confirm her mother's story and make a few editorial changes to some details. Part 3 was an interesting analysis of the impact on the lives of the children of Holocaust-surviving parents. (The author was actually born in a Displaced Person's camp in Europe after the war ended before her parents---reunited only after the war---immigrated to the US.) Ettie researched this aspect within her own family and with other families living in NYC.

It was an amazing true story of a strong beautiful woman who went through and survived such horrible circumstances during the holocaust in Lithuania. It is amazing and scary to see how neighbors around her and her family turned on them and assisted the Germans in all the atrocities committed during the years of being in a ghetto and concentration camp and even after they were released. I couldn't put this book down!

The book is an accurate account of the authors families experiences during the Holocaust. It is a tribute to her mother and all of the family members who survived and those who perished during this time in history. What her family endured epitomizes"Mans Inhumanity to Man".Exposure to the stories that her mother and father told during her childhood created an intense desire to validate these stories as well as well as walk in their footsteps. And so, her journey began. The book methodically details her journey and the mixture of emotions felt in so doing.From a very personal perspective, she describes the effects on children of Holocaust survivors. She explores the scientific as well as the environmental causes for these intensely personal and painful experiences.Every year, the family members and their children uphold the tradition of gathering at their parens grave in Israel. They connect and reconnect. They share stories and make sure that their children will "Never Forget" the past and understand the importance of "Never Again"!

Just when I thought there were enough, Ettie Zilber, you prove me wrong--again! This courageous act to share your mother's incredible survival story through her voice you and your sisters gleaned and held from getting her to record it with you before she died, and then your own, as a Second Generation Survivor, continuing to honor her and make her proud, is an act all daughters should consider! Yes, she saved her wedding ring and herself in that horrific camp and that ring brought her back to your father and you to this place. Thank you for saving her courage and that ring in this way!

Ettie (author) and her mom (Zlata) are truly Extra Ordinary. Zlata, a strong resourceful woman who was able to survive a series of atrocities and yet lived on with a positive but realistic attitude toward life. Ettie, a the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, who allowed herself to be exposed to her mother's oral history, to travel to Europe to document and to relive her mother's inhuman treatment. Ettie does an excellent scholarly, yet extremely personal, exploration of how she (and her extended family) were affected by her parents experiences.A well-written, personal story that needs to be read and used as a teaching tool so that the "Holocaust cannot be denied, minimized or forgotten". Several of my friends, relatives will be receiving a copy of this emotional impactful book.

This is an amazing account of Zlata Sidrer's life in Kaunas Lithuania before the Holocaust and her incredible tale of survival. The author, Ettie Zilber, uses the literary device of keeping the testimony in Zlata's voice, which makes it very authentic. One could almost hear Zlata's voice while reading her testimony which distinguishes this book from many other books about the Holocaust, including memoirs. In the remainder of the book, Ettie reflects on the impact of her family's experiences on her own beliefs and behavior, thus contributing to the growing body of evidence on the impact of survivors' experiences on their children's DNA.

Just scanning the table of contents makes me excited! A good introduction to cybernetics.But the actual thrust of this review is to reassure other buyers that the production woes reported by other buyers appear to be solved. The print is legible, pagination is in order, and this is a legit reprint.You can buy this book without those basic worries.Enjoy!

This book is so mind blowing that i bought 2, so i can give one as a gift to a mathematician i know.Really, Cybernetics is so amazing that probably will be the reason that someone will save the world. Probably a few politicians should read this.

More math than I thought. I was looking for and easier read. But did get an idea about requsite variety that was helpful to my studies.

A fundamental book for systems engineers and control engineers. It sets the principles of our current understanding of robotics or other areas of cybernetics.

This print is extremely poor quality, do not be fooled by the "High Quality" tags on the cover page. I cannot even read the text. Since I'm not in the US i have trouble returning the item to Amazon. So just leaving this comment for everyone else to be aware.

Many books have been written on the topic of control system theory. After reading a number of such books I can say without reservation Dr. Ashby's is the best treatment of the subject, bar none. His perspective is unique and wholly comprehensive.To elaborate let me say that one of the goals of any introductory text is to provide a general overview of the subject matter in as clear and concise of manner as possible. Dr. Ashby does one better. Not only does he accomplish this aim, but while doing so he manages to develop a theoretical and technical foundation of understanding that goes right to the bedrock of eternity itself.For instance one of the most primitive but arcane concepts in all physics is entropy. I personally spent decades trying to reduce entropy to a simple understanding but was always confounded by the "entropy is a measure related to heat engines, but also related to disorder," rhetoric. After all, pragmatically what do heat engines and scrambled eggs have in common? I sure wasn't able to connect the dots in any kind of intelligent way. Moreover it seemed no one else could either. After reading dozens of various books on the matter the explanations of the authors always fell short of offering the simple enlightenment I sought. However, in "Intro to Cybernetics" Dr. Ashby not only explores entropy in a way that is drop-dead simple (the entropy factor is overshadowed by a general principle which governs more than a reservoir of heat energy), but he goes on to show how information and control principles are the flip-side of the entropy principle. Tersely, the entropy principle is abstractly about variety or choice (reflected in Boltzmann's S=kLogW), while information and control is about selection and constraint.Everyone has experience with this model. Consider that laundry taken from a dryer and cast on a bed can potentially fall into a multiplicity of different arrangements. But it is only after a cybernetic mechanism uses certain rules of selection to apply some measure of constraint that the state of the laundry converges to an orderly stack. Also consider that a car moving along a roadway literally has innumerable trajectories it can follow at any point along the path. However cars typically arrive safely at their destinations thanks to a control mechanism which uses sophisticated selection rules to apply constraint to the vehicle so as to avoid disastrous outcomes. Moreover, The unique selections of genes and genetic activity in the metabolisms of various organisms act to constrain the ordering of raw matter to the specific types of structures and behaviors these things possess. This too is an example of how information and control mechanisms limit the possible arrangements of matter to a very narrow subset, i.e. a dog, a cat, etc.In fact, Dr. Ashby is able to show how this abstract model of variety vs. constraint literally expands so as to overshadow everything going on under the sun, from the very simple to the highly sophisticated. Nobody explains this model better than W. Ross Ashby. In fact, I don't know of anyone who's talked about the subject in this manner. For this, I think Dr. Ashby was a true visionary, and surely one of the great minds of science in the twentieth century.An Introduction to Cybernetics is clearly a classic work equivalent to Newton's Principia Mathematica. Everyone with an interest in science and engineering should read it. Some formal training in science and engineering is probably a necessary prerequisite for getting the most from it.

Ashby's revelations are so profound that it's almost a disservice to refer to this as a book. Those revelations will not come easily. Ashby develops a very precise vocabulary and it is essential for understanding to learn and remember their meaning. It is this new vocabulary that makes it possible to see the world in a different light.The impact of those revelations affected my abilities enough that in graduate school cybernetics was made part of the curriculum and later in a business environment the company's middle-management was required to take a course on the subject.Cybernetics (I prefer Informational Mechanics) is a math similar to geometry except that instead of dealing with shapes and space it deals with change, complex change.One particularly important aspect of that subject might be labeled the mechanics of human communication. In a nutshell Ashby shows how concepts from Shannon's Information Theory are applicable to human reasoning and communication. Again understanding those concepts is a life altering experience, but not easy.Learning informational mechanics is a little like learning algebra. You have to understand the fundamentals for it to be useful.I first read the book in 1957. Fifty-five years later I still refer to it.There are a number of copycat books that in essence parrot Ashby's vocabulary. They are relatively useless.
