This is the 2nd of Toni's books I have picked up. (First being Bullets and Bosses Don't have Friends). While I don't have the same reasons for needing to bolster my skillset, I do feel a kinship in the realization that I have hit a wall in my career and I am never going to break through that wall without a paper document saying I have completed college. Like her, I went back to college several years out of high school. It's nice to read someone's success story when you're dealing with much the same thing under different circumstances.I particularly like the quotes that are used in the beginning of each chapter. I have two favorites. Chapter 6 "Any fool can know. The point is to understand." - Albert Einstein. Before she starts to talk about what she didn't know and how her Professor helped her to realize what she didn't know and how to fix it. My most recently completed semester had a teacher who also went the extra mile in that fashion. He would say "There's a difference between being able to do it, and knowing how to do it." That statement really took me back and made me realize just how much I don't KNOW how to do just because I CAN do it.My second favorite quote was "Power Corrupts. Knowledge is power. Study hard. Be evil." - Unknown. Sometimes you just really need a kick in the butt to focus, and this book really helped remind me WHY I needed to study hard and persevere.The author is spot on about "Finding the Tribe". If you can join a study group. Do it. We are still trying to get together but there are only 5 in our pilot program and we live long distances from each other. (over snowed in mountain passes type long, not across town jump on the bus long)The book tells the story of the author breaking past the poverty cycle, and being the hero of her family. She becomes the "normal" instead of settling for what she can do. She sets the bar, and inspires those who follow her. I thought it was pretty amazon the list of college credentials her family now has - thanks to the road she paved in showing it CAN be done.You're still paving that road Toni!! In fact, while I was reading your book, I received a call from my college today congratulating me on a scholarship I had won, and now they want to work with me on my graduation plan!! Thanks for being an inspiration!!! Sometimes others just need a kick in the butt to get the ball rolling again. In my case, I needed to read that it is possible, and remind myself that it is possible.

Imagine being the first African-American woman in your family to go to college. That's what author Toni Crowe did in 1979, which paved the way for the rest of her family to follow in her pioneering footsteps. This tale is the true story of not only what Toni experienced, but provides different tips to survive higher education, which are still relevant today. For example, according to Mrs. Crowe- “Professors are paid to help you ... sleep is a luxury. The most reliable trick is to drink three big glasses of water before you go to sleep. That simple. You will wake up about three and a half hours later, and when you do, you’ll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed because your bladder will be killing you. After you use the restroom to get rid of all that water you deliberately drank, you’re awoke. Now you can go to work.” Please excuse the minor spelling issues, hazard of the book. Anyway, that water truck actually works! So does sleeping in a strange place in your house, not your bedroom or the couch. Yo wake up wondering where in the world you are, not to mention how you got there, weird! Something I really liked is that each chapter began with a different famous quote.. I wish I’d read this short self help narrative when I was going to college. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone preparing to start or return to a four-year university.

I love this book!!. As soon as I opened it I was sold. This book tells the story of the author breaking barriers and becoming a hero as the first black woman in her family to go to college. She redefines her life instead of settling based on the cards she was dealt with. Toni Crowe depicts her college career the good, bad and ugly. She is a true inspiration and leader which is evident by the list of college credentials her family currently has thanks to her paving the way and proving greatness can be achieved no matter the circumstances.I am an American American woman so this book really stood out and spoke to me. I was lucky enough to attend college and now I am on the path to becoming a successful business owner. Any doubt I ever feel I will refer back to this for motivation. It really does give you that push and reminder that anything is possible. If I knew about the book while going to college I would have been light years ahead. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone preparing to start college no matter your age.One of my favorite things about the book we’re the famous quotes at the beginning of each chapter it gave me so much motivation to become a better version of myself. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I am positive that this will fall on deaf ears but I must say something. Called customer service to find out about some charges. The woman could barely speak English, had to stop her many times as she could not understand what I was trying to ask. After finally getting through to her what the issue was, she blurted out some scripted bull and couldn't answer any other questions. When I asked her if she was in the US, she simply hung up! Seriously! Oh and then when I went to the website to figure out how to leave a message or comment - nothing that was easily accessible. Its forcing me to give you at least one star - you don't deserve even that! Will be seriously reconsidering using Amazon in the future.

I read Six Months in Sudan before South Sudan became a separate nation and the ensuing devastation that has engulfed it since. Reading this book opened my eyes into the cultural problems that faces the medical professionals who work with Doctors Without Borders. Even in the calmer setting of this book, working in an alien culture, particularly that of the third world, presents its own problems when trying to interface with the people and belief system of that culture. Maskalyk has great empathy for his Sudanese patients and goes out of his way to try to understand them. It's a good read and gives insight into the problems facing anyone working in South Sudan.

What admiration I have for these doc. If we only had more people like this, all over the world. One person can make a tremendous difference. And what a little amount of money it would cost to wipe out some of these diseases.

This book took me on a daily basis to somewhere I could never visit, facing hardships and losses that would overwhelm me. But, he did so in an honest way that forced me ,in my comfortable existence, to face and embrace the daily struggles of those in Sudan.Dr. James and his team, and some Sudanese patients felt like friends by the end of the book.

I enjoyed this story very much. Six Months in South Sudan is a tell-all account of what it is like to live and work in a humanitarian emergency. I found the book very riveting - I actually left it on a plane (ironically, on my way back from South Sudan) and re-bought the kindle version so I could finish it because I could not be left wondering how it would end! As a somewhat new aid worker myself, I could relate to this book and the situation, however I found it very informative about life in the field (providing an often sobering view of what it is really like) and the Abyei region and took with it many lessons that I myself can take to the field - as well as information about the South Sudan in general. Many thanks to Dr. Maskalyk for writing such a wonderful book!

Book in pristine condition. Written by Canadian volunteer with of his experiences as a doctor with Médecins san Frontières in Darfur. He gave a very engaging interview on CBC radio so purchased book for niece who has volunteered with NGO in Sudan.

Great personable read. Dr. Maskalyk reminds us that there is only one world (the world in Abyei and wherever you are is the same world).

The book is ok in covering PMBOK knowledge area however not even close to what I have experienced on the exam. Exam questions are situational situational situational I only used my calculator formula may be once. I will definitely look somewhere else if I want to get more situational questions and less theoretical questions...the exam was way tougher. Good luck

I took the practice exams in blocks of 10 questions so I could look back and figure out why I missed them AND also calculate my scores so I would know when I was getting near a success rate that would enable me to pass the exam. My target eventually became 80 - 90% on the Practice Exams so I could give myself a margin for error.When I read the book, I got bogged down because the PMBOK is a beast. I already understand Project Management. I do it every day. BUT when I took the practice exams and I missed a question, it directed me to a section of the book where I read the couple of pages before and after the answer to put context around the answer. The benefit: It FORCED me to different sections of the book.Since I was missing questions about certain practice areas, it identified my weaknesses so I could work on them. I also looked at some of the sections for answers I got right, but I focused on the areas for questions I got wrong.I passed the exam on my first attempt.That was my strategy. Good luck finding yours. I think this book can play an instrumental role in your success.One Final Tip: The day of the exam, study the formulas for the 30 minutes before going in to take the exam.
