Definitely one of my favorite books of fairy tales to read to my children! Wonderful illustrations, and great classic stories. This is my one of my favorite versions of the three little pigs, where they trick the fox multiple times before he finally becomes so frustrated he tries to get to the pigs by jumping down the chimney. And the Princess and the frog is such a wonderful story - although I find the part at the end that talks about the bands breaking on the mans heart a little strange - but maybe that's just because I've never read that anywhere else before...... still my favorite fairy tale!

Scott Gustafson first attracted my attention with his stunning illustrations for J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan." With "Classic Fairy Tales," Gustafson raises the bar once again, standing alongside K.Y. Craft, Charles Santore and Greg Hilderbrandt at the forefront of fantasy illustration. The text of these ten tales ("Goldilocks & The Three Bears," "Puss In Boots", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs", "Tom Thumb", "Hansel And Gretel", "Rumpilstiltskin", "The Frog Prince", "Cinderella" and "The Three Little Pigs") is straightforward; the morals are easily apparent ("Litttle Red Riding Hood said to herself that, as long as she lived, she would never leave the path and stray about in the wood alone, and she would always do exactly what her mother told her."). But the fairy tales themselves are not the main attraction here. The illustrations, which definitely take command at center-stage, are. Gustafson's strength is his ability to combine the necessary aura of "magical- long ago and far away" with a strong sense of living, breathing naturalism. You get the sense that these fairy-tales could have REALLY happened; at some place, at some time. We see a particularly naughty Goldilocks, a demure Little Red Riding Hood pitted against a devious Big Bad Wolf. Never before have the deep, dark woods looked so foreboding in "Hansel & Gretel." Gustafson goes for maximum scariness in this story. Hansel and Gretel are pictured as adorable tots. The Witch, dressed in a candy hat and Cupcake dress, appears as a frightening, human extension of her own Gingerbread and Candy house. Gustafson's double-page illustrated spreads, most effectively used in "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" and "Cinderella", are awe-inspiring and visually arresting.

Bought this used. It didn't say it on the product description but it was signed by the illustrator. The art is so well done. Truly lovely. The stories are more detailed than Disney and will hold the attention of kids 5 and over in my opinion. Heavy and with lots of pages. Book originally cost 19.95...letting you know so you don't get screwed on the price😉

I don't have kids, but I'm a sucker for illustrations and this and its companion volume 2 were in the Daily Deals today for $1.99.First, the product description is for the two-volume set. Volume 1 includes only Snow White, Rumplestiltskin, The Frog Prince, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. It does not contain the story illustrated on the cover.Volume 1 is 70 pages, not 144. This is not due to variable font size, because it doesn't have that.These books are not available on e-ink devices, not surprising as they rely so heavily on color illustrations. BUT: They don't behave as Kindle books, more like comic books. They display only in 2-page landscape orientation. The text has no overall size selectability, but is instead embedded with popup windows which obscure some of the pictures when open. I sent this to an 8.9 inch Fire HD and needed to use the popups to read the text comfortably. The native text would be microscopic on a 6 or 7 inch screen.The pictures are not zoomable. That's the most fun of illustrated Kindle books on Fires and it's not available in this book. Several of the pictures take up the whole 2-page screen or wind through the text across both pages. If you want to curl up with the kiddies, you'll need to do it in front of the TV and mirror the book to the big screen in order to read and look at the pictures simultaneously.As other negative reviews have pointed out, the story details are not what you might remember. They are adaptations somewhere between original Grimm and Disney. In Little Red Riding Hood, both Grandma and Little Red are eaten by the wolf. When the hunter snips them out of the still-living, sleeping wolf, they emerge whole, only complaining that it was dark in there. Red fills the wolf with rocks and they sew him back up before he wakes and falls over dead from the weight of the stones. Grandma drinks the cider and feels better, Red vows to never disobey Mama again.

Was so very excited when I found this book while looking for additions to baby's library. It was the first book of Fairy Tales that I've run across to have some of the lesser known, but still beloved stories, included within their pages. I was so excited when I browsed through the table of contents and discovered among the stories was both Puss In Boots and Rumpelstiltskin (the later a favorite of mine as a child). I bought it up right away! So happy to now have an opportunity to share with baby some of my favorite stories from childhood :)

The pictures in this collection of 10 favorite tales are just wonderful and plentiful. Kids love a story that has something to look at every time you turn a page. Many double spreads here as well, and they are exquisitly detailed. All of the children have such endearing faces. Gustafson gives them just the right expression for the moment he's describing. The colors are vibrant and rich. Pages are large, paper is heavy quality. Very well done. Your kids will love it. And it will take you back to a happier time in your life. I read to my younger sister, my own kids, and now my granddaughters. It never gets old.

I have had this book for eight years now and bought it for my son when he was first born. 8 years later he still asks me to read it with him. The illustrations are beautiful.

Great book. Very specific techniques

I recommend this book to anyone looking to get in shape. Not just for rugby but for life.

My rugby playing son says this is a great training guide, and that he has brought many of the ideas and tips to his team during their weight training work-outs.

If the indifferent copy editing doesn't give it away this book is awful. The total lack of fundamental weightlifting technique in this book is the first issue. The impenetrable, terrible instructions are another issue. When I pick up a weightlifting book, what I want to see is an emphasis on the four major lifts and programs constructed around those lifts. This book doesn't have that. Instead you get an exhaustive listing of various exercises, carried over from other sources, so that the company doesn't have to bother creating new content. (I have the football version.) Don't buy this book. Buy this book:UComplete Conditioning for RugbyWhich in addition to having superior exposition on weightlifting, manages to corral a comprehensive program on agility, speed, and fitness between the pages.And this book:Starting Strength, 3rd editionFor the fundamentals of weightlifting.All I can say is avoid this one. Beginners won't have the information they need to begin making steps forward in the gym, and there is absolutely nothing useful in here if you have even a figment of an idea about how to lift weights. One of the most useless books I've ever spent money on.

Numerous typos, and formatting mistakes. Content was okay but nothing ground breaking. I'm sure you can find the same info online formatted much better.

Simple read. Provides some good ideas for conditioning and weightlifting. Recommend if you need to go back to the basics and get motivated again.

This book breaks down workouts in an easy way to understand. The text explains how to lift properly in each list and even has pictures for those that need the visualization. Stongly recommend this book for anyone that wants to lift for rugby or just wants to be in outstanding shape because this book sets you up to be prepared for anything.

Liking this book already! Cannot wait to start the training!

Shorter than I expected; a little disappointed. Written by someone very young, I believe. A good book for kids interested in animating legos; but this is not a Professional book at all, I'm afraid.

I have been doing stop motion for a long time and I always put my vids on youtube (please check out my channel brick beats and subscribe) Now I know to edit my stuff on different kinds of software and a bunch of other stuff. Loved it! it was just kind of short.

McGovern theorizes that organisms great and small, perhaps from the unicellular to non-human primates to humans, are hard wired to crave the products of sugar fermentation, particularly alcohol. This taste for fermented beverages has been a driving force in the evolution of human biology, agriculture, culture and religion, or so it would seem. McGovern documents this evolution through archeological findings from Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East -- anywhere and everywhere wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages have been made for many thousands of years,from grain, fruit, honey and whatever other raw material mankind could coax into creating intoxicating food and drink. We are, as McGovern has entitled his very first chapter, "Homo Imbibens."As the book concludes, summing up the theme, "our species' intimate relationship with fermented beverages over millions of years has, in large measure, made us what we are today."Being neither an archeologist nor a paleontologist, I found some of the copious detail presented in this book to be tough sledding. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read and worth the effort.

Simply an outstanding book of scholarship. McGovern is a scientist who speaks fluent vernacular, which for most of us is a blessing. This is a remarkably inclusive survey of worldwide alcoholic beverage production and consumption from the end of the last ice age through the age of the Greeks. Though much of the book deals with the beginnings and subsequent evolution of wine and beer, he touches on drinks, ceremonies and rituals involving fermentation of myriad fruits, honey and starch laden grains from South America to China to Africa. One can't help but be impressed by the widespread use of alcohol by almost every societal group on earth. The picture painted by the author is of an ancient world practically awash in mixed drinks (beer, wine, and honey mixed together being a common one) and a remarkable diversity of stand alone wine and beer styles, often infused with herbs and flavorings, many hallucinatory, to enable the priests and leaders of early societies to commune with their particular gods and goddesses. These drinks have not only been an integral part of human life for thousands of years but may well have been the impetus behind agricultural domestication, human migration and trade and the spread of dominant cultures.For any student of the human condition, of the development of ritual and religion, of the emergence of humanity from our earliest hominid ancestors - and certainly for any thoughtful devotee of wine or beer, I highly recommend Uncorking The Past.

Absolutely fascinating, enthralling read! I am finding it difficult to put this book down so that I can go to work....or do just about anything else. If you have any interest in fermentation and how it has affected humanity throughout history, you're going to want to read this. The author is known as "The Indiana Jones of Ancient Fermented Beverages", and now I understand why.

A good review, with interesting insights on the evolution of fermented beverages in early humanity. A lot of unexpected side observations on everything from the bible to the human psychology, as well.

Very entertaining, interesting and informative history of fermented beverages by beer lovers' favorite molecular archeologist, Dr. Patrick McGovern, who has worked with Dogfishhead in recipe recreations and was seen on Brewmasters. Great read if you are interested in archeology, brewing, fermentation in general, and the rise of civilization.

Even when they clearly love their subject matter, not all authors can achieve what McGovern manages with such apparent ease: to pull you right into the story, sharing a wealth of historical and scientific knowledge in a fun and painless way.

This is a really great, comprehensive discussion of ancient brewing in different time periods, geographic locales and cultural contexts. It's well-written and entertaining. Highly recommended.

We're not stupid. We invented this internet but this book explains why we are so misinformed which is worse than being uninformed.

One of the slogans of American conservatives is that the American media is liberal and left-leaning. This book argues the opposite, and that from the 1960s onwards, the takeover of family-owned and family-runned media outlets by large, usually multinational corporations has reduced the quality of news-reporting. Furthermore, media (news) outlets are now primarily vehicles for advertising. The effects of this are multiple. First, there are implicit and explicit pressures within many news organizations to NOT report news that might be damaging to the public image of either that organization's advertisers, parent owners, or other businesses owned by that organization's parent owners. Second, many news organizations purchased by corporations in effect become advertising and propaganda vehicles and not impartial news dispensers any more. Third, in order to satisfy advertising needs, news editors are often forced to mellow the content of their news to make it less offensive and controversial, since offensive and/or controversial content can lessen the buying mood of watchers/readers, which in turn reduces the efficacy of advertising. Fourth, many locales are now served by one news outlet per medium; i.e. one newspaper, one TV station and one radio station. In some instances, all the news outlets in one geographical area (re city) are owned by one corporation. The effect of this is a gradual reduction in the diversity of news in the general media within each city or township. This, argues the author, is highly damaging to the participatory democracy that is the USA. Last, all of this is done in the face of rising profit margins within many news organizations; i.e. the surrender of editorial privilege to advertisers is done solely to increase profits, and not to ensure profitability.The author argues his points in various ways. First, he provides numerical data to justify his claims. These include the number of privately-owned and publicly-owned news organizations over the past century. Second, the author details specific case studies showing how corporate (advertisers) needs have overtaken editorial judgement within various news organizations. Third, the author provides some of his own subjective evaluation of news content over the decades.I found this book's arguments highly convincing. There is a small addition for the new Internet medium, but it is quite short and deserves further expansion; hence I give the book only four out of five stars. But this is still a great book and highly recommended for those interested in the social sciences, and any American voter in general.

When a book reaches its fifth edition, it's usually got something to say. In two prefaces, an introduction, 13 chapters and an afterword, Bagdikian sounds an alarm against the dangerous influences that corporations have had on the media landscape. He argues that concentrated control of the media amounts to a "new kind of central authority over information" (p.xiv). The book provides anecdotal insight into some instances where corporate control has negatively impacted the content of various media outlets. Pointing out that the majority of corporate leaders are economically conservative, Bagdikian states that if their corporate interests are at stake, the leaders will use the power over their media holdings to exact influence in the situation:"Some intervention by owners is direct and blunt. But most of the screening is subtle, some not even occuring at a conscious level, as when subordinates learn by habit to conform to owner's ideas" (p.45). He adds: "The quiet alteration of news...may seem preferable to placing corporate money and reputation in jeapordy" (p.37). In one chapter, the author includes detailed information on how newspaper owners once influenced then President Nixon to support passage of the Newspaper Preservation Act; effectively allowing newspapers special status to shield them from anti-trust, monopoly regulations. For his role, "In 1972 Richard Nixon received the highest percentage of newspaper endorsements of any candidate in modern times" (p.99). Bagdikian does a fine job highlighting a very important issue that could benefit from further research. Indeed, perhaps empirical rather than anecdotal evidence would bolster many of the claims eluded to in the book. In writing this book, however, Bagdikian has created a seminal work in the field dealing with increasing corporate control of news sources and the potentially negative effects this can have on the overall structure and operations of media outlets throughout the world.

When marvel cancelled POTA without warning, i was more than annoyed. These reprints make hop for that. While the battle adaption is fine (and different since it uses an earlier script), the best story in the entire run is in this issue. The standalone called "Evolutions Nightmare" was, in my humble opinion, the best story Doug Moench wrote for the entire run. A story of hate, survival and learning a lesson, it would make a really excellent movie. Nice to have these back even if, as an adult (my wife would disagree with this self assessment) I see the flaws that passed by as a teen.

I loved this book. The art is good. I have all 29 of the original Marvel magazines. These books look better the art looks better on better paper. I hope they will do the Planet of the Apes annuals in Archive 5.

I bought both books, "How to Shoot Like a Navy Seal", and "Navy Seal Shooting". I've read them both and they are great. I'm actually re-reading Navy Seal Shooting again. I also bought the audible version of "Navy Seal Shooting" and have listened to it a couple of times so there must be something I like about them. I prefer, "Navy Seal Shooting" over "How to Shoot Like a Navy Seal" only because he goes into much more detail on the topics on his first book. I also signed up for his online program and find the videos to be very informative and well shot-so to speak. I'm the operations officer (S-3) on a team called SATT (Small Arms Tactical Training) with the CANG. I've often felt a bit frustrated watching my NCO's instruct PMI strictly by the FM's and TC's. I've pushed more out of the box (FM) thinking in conjunction with in box regs to help the soldiers we train to better understand their weapon and to score better with their IWQ. Having these books and Chris Sajnog's approach as a reference have made it a lot easier to explain many of my out of the box idea's. Plus, I got a bunch of new material to work with. The results have been impressive. I had my share of NCO push back before-mainly because I'm an officer and NCO's hate being told anything by officers when it comes to their work. But, after watching and listening to me work with soldiers and hearing their feed back and seeing their improvements on the rang, I'm getting a lot less these days. Bottom line up front. These are great books on the fundamentals on shooting your carbine and pistol. You won't get be a better shot by reading them but if you put in the work, that is asked of you, you will get better and see big chances in your shooting. I can't recommend these books enough.

At 69 years old I purchased a hand gun and took the NRA Protection in the Home course to qualify me for a concealed carry permit. I am able to shoot at the range, but I'm finding that there are a lot of things to learn to become proficient at personal protection. Chris Sajnog has written a book that helps me learn these skills, one at a time, to become a better shooter. To me the key is practice, practice, practice. I practice technique starting off slowly and after repeating again and again, it becomes natural to do it correctly. In a short time I have found my natural position, improved my grip, and learned to focus on the front sight, among other things. I am able to tighten my cluster of shots considerably. I am combining the text with the videos that Chris provides to help me visualize the skills. I am not finished with the course outlined in the book, but I'm eager to continue to learn and improve. Chris inspires me to want to learn what it takes to protect myself and my family.

Book is ok, but very short. You'll buzz through it an 1 hour. Some good things to think about regarding sight focus and grip - just most is very, very basic - I guess he does stress fundamentals being important - but Navy Seal in the title sets expectations much higher than the content delivered. My complaint that takes this from 4 stars to 3 starts is that it constantly directs you to his website. I still have not located the supposed 12 free videos there. Is website is akin to a 99 cent app constantly telling you to earn more stars (yes, there is a star system on it), pay more to unlock more "secrets" and on and on. I don't mind him have many links to stuff he sells (grip strengtheners, laser targets, etc.), but my overall impression is he wants to be a millionaire through nickel-and-diming people. He should be proud of what he accomplished as a Seal, and I'm sure knows a lot. But I wanted to learn much more from this $10 book WITHOUT having to pay much, much more on his convoluted money-pit website. The best stuff from this guy are the Youtube videos on focus. You don't have to register on his website for those.

I had my doubts when I was considering this book. I have read a few books on marksmanship, watched youtube videos, etc. I was worried that the "revolutionary" new techniques would be much less than that. Gladly, I was wrong. So wrong.If you expect to find secret practices that nobody else teaches, well, you will be disappointed. If you want to learn cool new tricks and techniques for marksmanship look elsewhere. None of that stuff is in this book. There are no gimmicks, no tricks, no fluff.What you will find is a system. The system is simple. That's the genius. I suggest you read through. Then, begin to train, step by step. I nearly guarantee you that if you become critical about your techniques you will find that this book provides you with hidden jewels everywhere. Before reading this book I thought I only needed work in a few areas. After reading the book, I found that it was best for me to start from scratch and redevelop my stance, grip, sight alignment, and much more. The most valuable lesson in the book is the training philosophy. Dry fire, dry fire, dry fire.That's all I'll say without giving away it's contents. But I warn you. If you aren't ready to be critical of your current techniques don't bother. If you aren't open minded enough to try what is presented in the book you aren't a good candidate for its lessons.Chris Sajnog, I salute you. Thank you.
